750ml bottle generously shared by THANAT0PSIS at our crazy bottleshare last night, 10/5/2013. Poured into a Zwanze 2013 glass.

Looks just like NG Raspberry Tart to me (which is pretty much going to be the main comparison here). Pours an opaque-ish, dark red and jammy-looking body with a nice bit of 1cm pink head, with good retention and lacing. Looks very much the part of a raspberry beer.

Smells so jammy. So, so, so much raspberry fruitiness in this, its not funny. At the same time, its not overly sweet. Its not complex, but its incredibly intense in how fruity it is. It smells a little tart, but not incredibly so.. again, very similar to Raspberry Tart. Not particularly complex, but smells great.

Flavour-wise, its straight up raspberries. Its got a gazillion pounds of raspberries here. This is what Rubaeus should taste like. Unlike Rubaeus, it is not artificial-tasting at all. Holds up very well versus NG Raspberry Tart for sure, certainly exceeds the fruity jamminess.

Thick-medium bodied, well-carbonated, incredibly refreshing and comes with a pleasant, cleansing and dry finish. For a fruit beer, this is perfect as it is jammy as hell, mellow and well-carbonated.

As far as raspberry fruit beers go, this is a couple notches above Raspberry Tart. I thought Raspberry Tart was too sweet, but Blushing Monk is ridiculously fruity without that overwhelming sweetness of Raspberry Tart. Its basically a steroidal raspberry fruit beer and I would recommend to anyone who likes raspberries.

Beer Review: Blushing Monk
Reviewing the Blushing Monk from Founders Brewing Company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is the first release is Founders' Backstage Series.

Score: 94

July 2011 vintage bottle served in a snifter glass and enjoyed on 01/19/13 in honor of my good friend Adam Kaplan's wedding.

Appearance: Deep claret in color. Two fingers of light pink, strawberry ice cream colored head that settles to a thin layer atop the glass. Gorgeous lacing and really good cling. 5/5

Smell: Huge, jammy raspberries galore! Also present is sugary citrus, a little bit of floral , and faint yeast. Touch of grainy malt towards end of whiff. More raspberry comes through as it warms and airates 4.5/5

Taste: The Belgian qualities are more prominent on palate than they are in nose. Sweet and tart, jammy raspberry upfront, followed by slightly Belgiany yeast and malt. A touch of funk towards finish. Faint hint of alcohol, but well incorporated into the flavor profile. Gets tarter as warms 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus bodied, low-plus carbonation. Juicy on palate and slightly puckering. Lightly dry finish. 4.25/5

Overall: An excellent beer that was enjoyed by all the groomsman in the wedding party during the photography portion of wedding. This would have paired nicely with a donut or, more appropriately for the occasion, vanilla cake.

Pairing: A beignet.

Cost: $12.99 for a 750 ml bottle.
