Bottle: a stumpy 355mL brown bottle with a funky old-school label.

Appearance: pours a vibrant deep orange-gold, with a frothing head that settled to a one-finger with decent lacing. A good looking beer.

Aroma: a great aroma of multiple citrus hops (I can pick up tangerine, grapefruit and lemon) and pine hops also - plenty of them about!

Taste: a certain amount of pine resin with those citrus hops coming through for a complete whack against the palate. A decent amount of warming alcohol hangs about too. Great American IPA flavours.

Aftertaste: I'm not sure how they have done it, but the hop flavours have lingered through alongside hop bitterness generally found alone on the finish. Fantastic!

Mouth feel: moderate in body with a medium to high carbonation - plenty enough to get the flavours to come through strongly.

Overall: one of the best double AIPAs I have had to date. A good assortment of hops traditionally seen in an AIPA, but so clean and crisp that it simply has to be in my top 5.

Appearance- Light golden color, small head.

Smell- Very delicate smell for a double IPA. Hints of citrus and light hop aroma.

Taste- Delicate floral subtleties atop a finish of grapefruit and pill bitterness. Not my favorite flavor profile, but it's good for what it is. Seems to have a very light malt profile, barely detectable. Still than Centennial.

Mouthfeel- Good carbonation, drinks quite light for a double.

Pours with an amber/gold color. Small head with good lacing.

Smells like citrus. Lots of grapefruit on the nose. Some floral notes. Maybe even some slight honey?

Not as hop forward as I was expecting. The taste begins with a slight maltiness that I didn't expect from a double IPA, which subdues. Hops take over and provide a nice bitterness. Getting some herb flavor with lingering hops.

Almost a creamy mouthfeel. Thicker than most IPA's I've had. Still very good though.

I was surprised by the subdued hops, and actually enjoyed the slight maltiness. The thought occurred to me to maybe age one... but it is an IPA...

Overall a good beer.

12 oz bottle poured into a Founders imperial pint.
9.4% ABV, 86 IBUs, Bottled 06/17/2014

A - Hazed with fine particles, this golden orange beer is capped with a giant whipped-topping-like cream-colored head. Fantastic retention keeps the foam afloat despite the high ABV and as it descended into lumpiness, it left giant patches of sticky lacing.

S - Potent orange citrus, pineapple, and splash of grapefruit fruitiness mingle with pine-needle hop aromatics, bursting forth followed by an assertive malt backbone that holds everything together perfectly.

T - Big blast of sticky pine sap and bitter orange peel citrus hops punch you in the kisser followed closely by a potent alcohol spice and warmth. Its somewhat sweet malt backbone is there but completely overshadowed by hops.

M - Double Trouble's hefty malt backbone makes for a full body that's quickly offset by sharp hop bitterness and a spicy, drying alcohol finish that's a kick in the ass.

O - Founder's Double Trouble uses everything that's awesome about a double IPA to it's advantage; big fruitiness, pine sap bitterness, a hefty malt backbone, and the alcohol that goes along with it. In a market flooded with this style, Double Trouble is one of the better examples out there.

Note: I am not experienced in rating beers, but this beer reminded me of my favorite beer Plinny the Younger. I bought the Founders at an ABC Liquor, the beer was located on the checkout table, and it appealed to me. I figured $4.50 was a fair price... not cheap but not too expensive. So I tasted the beer and was impressed by its tart and biter features. It was a perfect thing to drink after a long day at work.

Pours a clear golden color with a small, white head that leaves little bits of lacing.

Smells of bright fruity hops.

Tastes of the bright hops with a solid malt base. Hops lead off with bright citrus notes coupled with some pine and floral notes. Not particularly bitter. Malts come through next and a touch of syrupy sweetness and bread. Finishes fairly clean with a bit of lingering hops.

Mouthfeel is medium with a slightly assertive amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is good, but I don't see it as one of the best. Maybe I got an older bottle.
