Does Founders make a bad beer? Not to my knowledge. Had a sample of this on-tap last night (didn't take notes, but it was delicious), so I had to pick up two 4-packs today.

Poured from a bottle into a Sierra Nevada pint glass. Not too much head, but underneath is a nice copper/light orange. While I prefer an unfiltered IPA, this is a lovely, well done beer that leaves lacing all the way down the glass.

The dominant aromas are of pine and citrus hops that are less strong than the large, outstanding flavor. The pineapple and grapefruit hops jump all over your taste buds and demand attention right from the very first sip, a real hop monster that compares very well to Hop Slam. The bitterness is there, but not overpowering by any means. There's a balancing sweetness from something that I swear tastes like honey, reminiscent of Hop Slam again. The alcohol is totally hidden. Amazing!

On the palate, it's medium and not the slightest bit watery with just enough carbonation to keep things refreshing. It makes you forget how much alcohol you're taking in. This is my second one in a row and if it wasn't past my bedtime I'd down another in a heartbeat. Very drinkable for such a high gravity, super hoppy beer.

Hop heads, take notice and don't let this year's Double Trouble disappear without at least one or two. Perhaps even better than this year's Hop Slam!

Update 04/01/2011 - No April fools: this is the best all around beer I've ever had. I'm on my second case and I hope to find another before they're gone for the year.

Tasted July 25th 2011 (from review)

Poured into a la Chouffe tulip

Double trouble

A - pale straw, half finger white head and some lacing

S - very sweet, tons of citrus, lots of tropical fruits and flowers, very sweet, lots of malt, slight pungent yeast and all around awesomeness

T - super hoppy, lots of sugar, tons of fruit, grass, yeast, wheat, nice sweet malt, boozey but not to boozey, very slight MJ note. Very simple but tons of flavor

M - Full bodied, excellent balance, simple complexity, medium acidity and a very nice almost perfect hop, malt and sugary booze finish

D/O - This is the kind of beer that makes me want all beers to be readily available all over the America's! One of the better DIPA's I have had and most definitely makes founders worth the "hype"

Final Thoughts - at 9+ ABV this beer kicks it into gear and is one of the better DIPA's. Still, not being easy to obtain, make this beer obnoxiously awesome!
