12oz bottle poured into a tulip.
No bottling date.
A - Pours a hazy, light orange peel color that is more reminiscent of a saison than an IPA. Builds a nice, 2.5-fingered, white head with moderate retention. Can see the very sporadic rise of carbonation even through the murky body. Great lacing twists its way down the glass, covering a large portion on the way down.
S - Smell is very intense citrus fruits and quite similar to Bell's Hopslam. There's a noticeable malt-backbone as well which supplies a chewy, grain-like aroma as well. I'm also getting some alcohol heat at the end of the bouquet.
T - After my first sip, I automatically think back to Hopslam once again. In my opinion these beers are very similar, even done to the not-so-friendly alcohol bite on the back-end. I don't know if its a certain kind of hop that both use that just doesn't sit right on my palate, but both kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Besides that, this beer is very bitter throughout, including on the very long finish. I think the malts come into play a bit more here than in the nose, as the grapefruit isn't as well-defined in the taste. At first, it's quite balanced, but as it goes on, the bitterness takes over. I'd like to know the date on this beer, as in my opinion I feel the hops are a bit faded given the lack of ... 'flavor' in the taste.
M - Mouthfeel is moderately light-bodied with good carbonation. Finish is long and bitter, and afterward the palate is sufficiently coated.
D - Drinkability is moderate. This beer is pretty similar to Hopslam in my opinion, although a bit more balanced and bland. I'd like to have this on tap to guarantee freshness, as I believe this may be a bit dated.
