Straight pour from a 12oz pry-off bottle to one of those DFH/SN IPA glasses. The sex toy one. Oddly, the bottle I’ve got has no bottling date . . . Founders is usually excellent about this, so the date must have rubbed off. It also appears that the neck collar label is out of place, evidenced by what looks like smeared glue. Must’ve been an off day on the bottling line. But, this was purchased a day after it hit the area, so I’m assuming that this is as fresh as it’s going to get around here—under one month from bottling, possibly ≤ two weeks.

Appearance (4.0): Pours with maybe a finger and a half of cream-colored foam, showing good retention in dying down slowly and leaving good lacing: soapy spots and suds on the near side of the glass, with fat, wide swaths forming a few fat patches on the far side. The body is a glowing, pale honey-gold with just a light chill haze—definitely not an example of the hazy variety of (D)IPA.

Smell (4.5): Pretty classic DIPA aroma here: some nectary citrus character (mango, pineapple) mixed with some earthy and resinous tones, with a nice, skunky, dank undercurrent. Tangerine blends with some malt character that comes off as moderately sweet, blonde, somewhat syrupy, but also with a rustic, fresh bread character. Hits all the right notes, and very aromatic.

Taste (4.25): Well, hops, obviously. Lots of skunky-dank hop flavor with earthy and clearly oniony, vegetal undertones—but for once that oniony character works for the beer. It maintains a very solid bitterness from start to finish, closing out with a clean citrus peel / herbal bitterness that hangs on for a decent length of time. The malt body offers a nice crackery, pale, biscuity launchpad for the hops to take off. Any alcohol present here blends into the hop profile, which is exactly what a DIPA should do.

Mouthfeel (4.0): The mouthfeel is characteristic of Founders beers, in my opinion: the carbonation is soft and fine-grained, never prickling or tingling, but foaming nicely and fully on the way down. The body is maaaaybe medium-weight with a mild viscosity and a good, oily feel. Definitely finishes dry, but moderately so. The alcohol dries it out a bit, no doubt.

Overall (4.25): This is a really solid, well-crafted DIPA that does everything it’s supposed to do, and quite well. It’s not ground-breaking in any way, either, but it’s still damn good. It’s got a full and varied hop flavor with solid but never overwhelming bitterness, with an understated malt body that has a character of its own—but still knows to stay out of the way. Definitely a very good DIPA, and proof that Founders knows what they’re doing with this style of beer.

Poured this sucker into a Samuel Smith pint glass. Looked at the label, at the pour, and said to myself, "This here's a sippin' beer." I have no idea why. I spent a lot of time in the company of an uncle from rural KY today, so my internal monologue may have been affected.

A: It looks right dashing, if I do say so myself. Pale amber in hue, Around a finger and a half of head which is slow to dissipate. There are light bubbles still coming to the surface, but nothing in abundance.

S: My first thought with the smell was, "Holy fruit, Batman!" I don't know what's wrong with me today. Anyway, yes, quite fruity. We're talking orange. It really brings to mind those Cubies that are apparently oranges or tangerines for kids. Sweet and citrusy. Definitely pine chilling out in there, too, and the nose is resplendent with hops.

T: The balance in this is where the taste finds its top attribute. There is a lot going on here, really, but the immediate taste upfront, a real powerful treat for the tastebuds, doesn't linger so long on the palate. A bit of grapefruit lingers, but the hops are with you immediately. Wonderful taste, wonderful balance, and the aftertaste is hoppy, but not especially jarring. I expected more aftertaste, to be quite honest. With the power of the flavor the moment it hits your taste buds, you'll know what I'm talking about.

M: Medium-bodied, lightly carbonated, and surprisingly smooth.

O: I would pick this up again in a heartbeat. Nicely balanced taste, wonderful hops, and enormous drinkability. Well worth your while.
