Another interesting limited brew by Founders was on tap during my recent visit.
Pepper Pale poured out about average for the style, pale colouration with a decent head on top. The smell was definitely distinct though, with a strong peppery tinge...it's generally difficult to get much of a smell in the brewery for one reason or other, so the fact that this one was strong makes it even more impressive.
The flavour on this is essentially what would be expected given the name. The backbone of this is a decent, malty pale ale. The spicy tinge of pepper pervades the flavour though, and lends quite a bite. I liked it at first, but by the end of the pint I found the flavour a bit astringent, and I have to mark the beer down a bit for it.
The mouth on this, about average for the style, while the drinkability was good at first, bad by the end.
The bottom line: a decent pale offering by the guys down at Founders, worth trying for the sake of variety, but not one of my personal favourites.

on tap at Founders
pours like an average pale, slight darker orange hue with moderate head. nothing spectacular. smell was strongly pepper with some malt hints, the first hint that this wasnt a normal pale ale!
this was my first time tasting a brew made with perpper, i was not sure what to expect (though i figured it would not be a chile beer-type offering.) first sip left me very impressed. a very strong pepper flavor at first with little detectable heat (as if eating the membrane of a pepper without the seeds) complemented nicely by the malt of the ale. leaves with a slightly spicy aftertaste, just hot enough to remind you its there without masking any other flavors. the ale and the pepper seem to work perfectly throughout, this is definetly not just their regular pale with a few peps thrown in.
mouthfeel was what i would expect from a pale ale on the malty side. smooth with moderate carbonation, any more and it would probably mask most of the pepper flavor leaving just the heat.
drinkability was great at first, though by the end of a pint the spiciness began to get to me. however, after a glass of blushing monk i was definetly ready for another (who wouldnt be!)
overall, a unique and excellently crafted brew, the maltiness of the ale combines with the pepper to make an unusual beer that isnt too over the top. another great job from what is rapidly becoming my favorite brewery. cheers!!

Notes from May 26, 2009
Tap@ Founders on 5/22/09. A hazy golden color body with a small frothy white head, spotty lacing. Aroma is spicy and slightly citrusy, hints of sweet bready malt.Flavor is lightly sweet, with herbal notes, some pepper and hints of citrus, a little of the malt as it warms, oily feel, light body, medium carbonation. This was not bad in any way but not something I would get on a regular basis, a fun try. Thank you Founders

Draft at brewpub in April 2009.
Poured clear orange color with an average white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate green chili and small hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Warm chili and small bitter flavor and medium bitter finish of moderate duration.
Interesting and my expectations were met.
