12oz bottle dated 09/23/11 poured to a snifter.
Appearance: Hickory reddish hue with shades of brown caramel. Not much activity. Light khaki head that dissipated quickly.
Smell: Immediate dark chocolate, caramel, and sticky bourbon hit the nose. Present oaky notes and some brown sugar sweetness. Sort of a dark, musty cellar vibe with a bourbon character that is smooth and welcoming. Balanced.
Taste: Sweet, dark caramels dunked in bourbon. Goes down super smooth. A little toasted marshmallow with great woody oak textures. I can't believe how mellow and complimentary the bourbon is to the other flavors. Nice. For whatever reason, the finish is a bit metallic, like drinking from a stainless steel bottle. Some heat from the alcohol as it goes down.
Mouthfeel: Very chewy, full bodied feel. Drinkable and smooth. Not sure where that metallic aftertaste is coming from though.
Overall: Nice body, chewy, oaky caramel and light bourbons round this brew out. Has the aesthetic of an Old Ale brewed by a crazy warlock in a musty stone cellar deep below the earth. Great balance. I dig it… probably be great with some chili.
