Now that I can no longer get McEwan's Scotch Ale in the US, this is my favorite beer. It is too bad that it only comes out once a year and is in such a limited distribution. Thankfully, I am a regular at the super distributor here in Eastern PA.

Where do I start?

It is dark with the pour. Just a few hints of red on the edges. Not much head which is just fine by me.

The smell is heavenly. Bourbon but with a complex mixture of sweet tones (vanilla, figs, raisins, chocolate, caramel and others. They are all there. I think I could live on the aroma alone, but the great thing is then you get to drink it.

The taste, ah the taste, it is fairly strong and complex, so much that you hesitate to swallon the first sip. It keeps growing and resonating and bringing out all the different characters there. The second sip is less bourbon and you start to really identify all the specialties. Vanilla comes at you, then caramel and chocolate. The third sip starts to bring out the fruits, figs, cheeries and raisins.

Mouthfeel, I guess on the heavier side but with so much goodness you wish it would never quit.

Overall: I do not think the brewers at Founders or anyone else could do a better job of making a true scotch ale with as much complexity and character as this. It is a true pleasure to drink. The only things I will say against it are 1) It only comes out 1X/year and in limited distribultion and with the high alcohol content, if you drink more than one you really feel it. However I will gladly put up with the buzz and slowly sip it.

Poured on tap in a 10oz pour. Had a hazy brown/ruby tint. Poured a yellowish/tan head that slowly faded down. The smell had a maple syup nose to it. We sat with a couple of friends that thought it had a strong whiskey smell, but we thought it was on par with most scotch ales. the ale was fairly complex and went through multiple flavour changes. It started off with a sweet maple flavour, which faded bitter and then finished sweet and scotchy. Aftertaste notes of fig or almond which lingered nicely on the palate.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Pours very dark brown with no head. A few slowly rising bubbles.

Aroma is nutty, malty, woody, and sweet with hints of booze, cedar and a tinge of buttercream toffee.

Taste is also a malt bomb. Sweet with plenty of bourbon notes. Fuck yea. Some more candy-like sweetness, warmth, caramel.

Not a huge body on this but just enough..

Pretty damn good. Can't wait to see how it mellows out.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Bruery Tulip.

A: Clear mahogany brown. Aggressive pour leads to a slowly rising thick light brown/beige head that disappears slowly leaving thick lacing.

S: Bourbon. It gave me those shivers you get after taking a shot of whiskey...that's how strong it is. Holy cow. Malts are present as are some dark fruits but this is a one trick pony. And that pony is drunk off of bourbon.

T: Bourbon mellows a bit leaving some spices and malts but still, the bourbon is humongous here.

M: Smooth finish, big bodied. Huge bodied. Perfect carbonation.

O: A sipper. Total nightcap beer. Tastes and feels like bourbon. Damn.
