A: Not much head, poor lacing. Clear, reddish brown.

S: Dates, molasses, vanilla, booze

T: Caramel, vanilla roundness, anise, dried fruit. Booze is fairly well hidden, all things considered. The alcohol does cut the sweetness nicely.

M: Viscous and smooth.

O: An amusing novelty.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a CBS Snifter.

A: Pours a very dark murky brown. No head is present, minor amounts of lacing.

S: Bourbon, oak, vanilla with a minor hint of some darker malts.

T: Vanilla and oak on the tongue, dark malts follows to a near sweet finish. Moderate amounts of bourbon throughout.

M: medium to full body, moderate carbonation. Enough heat to let you know you're drinking a bourbon barrel aged beer.

O: Founders doesn't disappoint when it comes to barrel aged beers. This is delicious and very complex, seems to get more complex the warmer it gets.

A-a deep ruby color with a nice fingers worth of light tan head

S-some malt smell with smokiness, but mostly just a large amount of bourbon

T-Wow that is a lot of bourbon flavor! I'm really not getting much else out of this beer unfortunately. Edit-as it warms the flavor improves slightly with more malt and caramel, but the bite still masks things too much in my opinion.

M-medium body, light carbonation, pretty hot from the alcohol

Overall I was excited to finally see this beer in my area and to try it. The bourbon is sort of overpowering, feels like I am having whiskey not beer. Maybe some age or warming would help improve things.

A: Dark reddish-amber with a thin 1-finger tan head.

S: Malt up front with some minor vanilla/oaky notes peeking through. Nothing aggressive, but nothing impressive, either.

T: First sip hits you with a blast of sharp bourbony alcoholic bite. Not much "beer" flavor here, just mostly alcohol and sharpness. As the beer warms, the flavors come through a bit more, particularly in the aftertaste, but nothing very fulfilling. Just sweetness, bite, and hints of other flavors mixed in.

M: Adequate carbonation, but lacking in fullness. Mostly just bite.

O: I'm not sure what to do with this brew, quite honestly. I love my beers aggressive, but this one just didn't cut it for me. There just wasn't much beyond the bourbon bite. Not much flavor overall, just "hints" of various other flavors. Perhaps some aging would do wonders for this beer, but I'm not so sure I'm willing to give it another shot quite yet. Above average brew, but nothing more.

Another Founders. This time in the backwoods. Bottle dated 15th October 2012.

Poured into a snifter, One finger thick tan colored head that soon dissipates into a ring. Excellent lacing. Hazy cloudy appearance with a lot of suspensions, probably of yeast. Color is dark brown comparatively transparent for a dark color. Ruby hue appears in the light. Almost no observable bubbles.

Smell : Some caramel that is prominent. Along with some burnt, smoky nose and a little alcohol. Oak barrel aging is only somewhat apparent.

Taste : Tastes like some kind of burnt up malt syrup. High on caramel, low on hops. some flavors of vanilla and alcohol. I personally do not like the taste. Sweet finish. Some wood flavor, that is very hidden.

Mouth feel : Medium bodied feel that is smooth due to moderate to low carbonation. Excellent warmth due to high ABV 10.2%. Not astringent at all due to alcohol, hops, or carbonation. So easy to drink.

This is a one strong ale. Way strong.

Style rate : For a strong scotch ale, it is good 4.25
Personally : 3.75, mainly due to alcohol and easy drinkability. Onthe lower side due to taste that puts me off. I won't buy it next time.

12oz bottle poured into an oversized snifter. Bottled 2012.

A: Half-finger khaki head...dissipated pretty quickly leaving a small cap and decent bubbles around the edge. Lots of alcohol legs and decent lacing.

S: Wow...awesome. Vanilla, coconut, caramel and a hint of cherry juice. Alcohol aroma is evident as you breath it in more.

T: Everything from the aroma comes through and I’m thankful for it. Tons of vanilla, coconut, dark fruits...mostly cherry. Strong alcohol.

M: This is a sipper...partially because it’s so enjoyable that you want to savor it, but also because the alcohol is not hidden. Body is pretty full, texture creamy, carb soft.

O: I’m a sucker for beers that get more flavor out of the barrels they use than the bourbon the barrels held. This is an excellent example...and an interesting experiment with a scotch ale. Grateful to now be able to get it in my market.

A- Poursa dark mahogany wood color, slightly reddish hue. Absolutely no head.

S- Smells of dark fruits, vanilla, and oaky Bourbon. Very nice smelling.

T- very robust, complex taste. Tastes of dark fruit, vanilla bean, and smooth Scotch. Very nice blend, bourbon is muted and provides for a nice, subtle, mellow backbone. Very good.

M- Incredibly smooth, even a bit creamy.

Overall- As someone who isnt even a huge fan of barrel aged beers, I found this one to be superb. Great complexity, smooth whiskey taste that isn't overpowering. Very very good
