Pours almost black, or a deep deep red when I held it up to the light. Almost no lacing and no head.

The rest of my review will be best for people who have tried Dirty Bastard, founders normal wee heavy scotch ale. This beer tastes like a smooth and creamy version of their normal Dirty Bastard. Backwoods is easy to drink, very smooth, and it does a great job of covering up the high alcohol content. The first sip and the smell reminds me of a typical wee heavy, but the finish is so easy and smooth. This stuff could be very dangerous if it was a bit cheaper. I could see myself accidentally putting down a 4-pack and blacking out.

Really a great beer. Wish it was a year round. It could have been a bit cheaper, but that's typical of my area. If it's priced correctly it sells out way too fast.

12oz bottle, 2012 release.

A: Pours a burnt auburn with a nice off-white head.

S: Cream, light peat, caramel, plenty of bourbon and oak.

T: Some vanilla, caramel, cooked lactose over a slightly astringent bitterness. Sweet, but dries out quickly. Oaky booze peeps out mid-palate. Somewhat nutty. Tannic vanilla and some bitterness lingers.

M: Medium-bodied with slight carbonation.

O: Not mind-blowing, but pretty tasty.

12oz bottle with a Bottled Date of 10/12/12 stamped on the neck. Pours a dark brownish black with almost no head. Moderate amount of lacing. The nose is a big whiff of oaky booze with some toffee and caramel. The taste is sweet oaky booze. The toffee and caramel malt flavors come out in the middle. More bourbon and oak at the finish. Not overly sweet. Warming alcohol presence. This is a slow drinker with lots of oak and bourbon. Overall, outstanding Scotch Ale that is easily one of the best around.

A: A medium-dark copper with a deep ruby hue and excellent clarity. The light tan head doesn't get very big but dissipates slowly.

S: A moderately-strong aroma of whiskey and oak with some of the cinnamon and vanilla aromas the the wood brings to the party. The alcohol aroma is moderately-strong warning of the potent potable you're about to drink. The aromas of a Wee Heavy sit just below that of the oak, with that rich malt and caramel aroma along with an earthy peatiness, not that the charred bourbon barrel might not have brought it's own phenols as well. A light diacetyl aroma and no hops

T: A moderately-strong caramel malt rich flavor balanced more by the alcohol than the light hops bitterness. There is a lot of the oak and bourbon presence here with a moderately-light vanilla flavor. A moderate amount of the earthy and peaty flavors and a light smoke but nothing like a Rauch Bier and not harsh at all. The balance is moderately sweet with a farily sweet finish. The aftertaste is malty sweet and a earthy.

M: Medium-full bodied, seeming even thicker with a moderately-low slickness. The alcohol provides a substantial warmth sure to take the chill of a cold night or at least make one relativity numb after a second bottle.

O: A potent, earth, sweet beer that stop short of being cloying but it definitely weighs in as a desert beer but that's the style. If you don't like sweet beers stay away. The Wee Heavy has the richness and boldness to let the oak and whiskey really infuse this beer with a lot of there character and the balance between the base beer and the oak is spot on.

Murky burnt copper brown body topped with a finger of boozy looking khaki head that sinks down to a thin collar which laces nicely - alcohol legs are apparent.

Loads of sweet bourbon on the nose... fresh peat, molasses, charred oak, some rye maybe, the nose actually reminds me very much of Brau Bros' Rye Wyne.

Again, this is really all about the bourbon. I was skeptical of its Wee Heavy categorization but I can see how that is the case, and it plays well against the heavy bourbon character. Bitter alcohol burn on the tail end. Not mind-blowing in this respect but still good.

Pretty low drinkability at this point, I anticipate some rounded edges after a year or so.

I enjoyed this beer very much.

Poured as a pleasant dark color with a thin, caramel colored head that did not last long.

Really nice blend of flavors from the barrel. Definite notes of vanilla. The bourbon characteristics were quite noticeable.

Careful, the high alcohol content can sneak up on you!
