22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at fridge-cellar temperature.
L – Pale amber color with a 2-finger bubbly, rocky, white head. Really nice retention and some great lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.
S – I’m getting a nice mix of vanilla-tinged bourbon and grapefruit and tropical fruit hop aromas. There may be some bready and caramel malt aromas here, too, but the bourbon and hops take the forefront. The alcohol is not nearly as prevalent as I thought it would be, and I am completely alright with that.
T – It starts off sweet with bready and caramel malt and vanilla. Earthiness and woodiness from the bourbon barrels comes in next, followed by grapefruit, mango, pine, and possibly floral hop bitterness. This is much more pleasant than I expected from a barrel-aged IPA, and the flavors seem to come together nicely.
F – Medium-bodied with good carbonation, a chewy, sticky, and mouth-coating feel, and a bittersweet, dry finish. Hoppy bitterness and vanilla sweetness both linger for a bit. There’s also a nice, smooth throat-warming sensation from the alcohol. I think a beer of this ABV and flavor complexity could use some more body, but the mouthfeel otherwise is nice.
O – This is a very interesting and pretty tasty beer. I really did not expect a bourbon barrel-aged DIPA to be any good, even if it was from Founders. As a matter of fact, the bourbon seemed to mesh well with the malt backbone and the bitter hops of the base beer, and the age did not seem to blunt the hops one bit. It didn’t quite blow me away as a DIPA, but it is definitely a cool idea.
