I think Founders is a fantastic brewery and produces some of my absolute favorites (their stouts and porters are among the best in the world), but this one just bombed out, to be quite frank.
Starting out with the appearance, I would guess this was a weak pilsener from the pale color (slightly golden yellow) and thin fizzy head. It smelled more like an oaky wine than a beer and I had a hard time picking out any real hop presence in the aroma. Taste was the best part of the experience, with a nice punch and some decent bourbony flavor, but there was no substance behind it, nothing to back up the sweetness, nothing to follow up at the end to clean up the palate. The flavor just hits with some heat and spice, then fades away quickly with no mouthfeel or creaminess. I'm actually being generous with my rating, as I don't feel this brew was offensive in any way and it certainly seems better than BMC swill, but as a "complete" beer, it totally misses the mark. My personal rating gives this a B-, no higher. I would not buy this again.
EDIT: As this beer warms, the flavors definitely become more pronounced and the mouthfeel becomes more full. However, I don't believe this changes my review, as the overall product still seems inadequate and misses the mark. I would much prefer a good barleywine or fresh DIPA rather than this, at a much lower price. Again, it's decent and definitely qualifies as a "good" brew, but it misses the mark in terms of a fulfilling brew.
