Had this on draft at the brewery. Served in a fluted glass.
A: Mostly clear, deep orange/gold with no head, and only a ring of carbonation at the edge. There is little carbonation evident at first, but a good swirl knocks it out of suspension. It's a dense, thick brew.
S: BIG. Boozy, hoppy, sweet... I told my fiancee it smelled like "candied hops". There is almost a coconut rummy boozy smell going on, like Malibu.
T: Unique. Prominent coconut and tropical fruits, booze, soft but big hop flavors that are well integrated. The coconut really makes it taste like Malibu, and once that got into my craw the comparison just wouldn't leave. Sweet, honey, with sweet and clean finish with no alkaline. The aging really takes the edges off of Double Trouble and turns it into a great beer. Big, savory, satisfyingly juicy with candy orange, resinous hops, tropical notes, and a big mouthfeel. This was my second glass of it ever, and I'm not sold on the coconut... I'm torn between a 4 and 4.5.
M: Great, juicy, thick, rick, supports the huge flavors.
D: So the major issue here is the fact that it's reminiscent of Malibu rum, with huge coconut aroma and taste along with some booziness. However, the rest of the flavors are superb and it's just a big satisfying beer for the most part. It's an big improvement over the harsh and unrefined Double Trouble, for sure, but it's not exactly perfection.
