Poured on tap at Hop City Birmingham on 5/4/13. This beer poured a sort of hazy yellow to almost yellow color. There was a good 2cm of head that stuck around longer than I would have expected given the ABV and it left fairly decent lacing. The haze however, was very present and failed to clear as the beer warmed a bit. The nose was a little less impressive than such a beer would promise. There was some floral and spicy hops on the nose and some smoky bourbon to the nose, but they seemed to mostly cancel one another out. There is definitely some alcohol bursting out of the beer as well. The flavor can be summed up in one word: smooth. The bourbon, I think, rounds out the double IPA flavors to a smoky and hoppy combo. The bitterness is there, but is, for the lack of a better word, smoothed out. Bourbon flavor is there and actually plays fairly nice with the hops in this beer. There is a little toffee and/or butterscotch (diacetyl) that creates a nice flavor to the beer. The mouthfeel was very big and very alcohol. The big flavors of DIPA and bourbon did nothing to mask that omnipresent burn. I had this beer with my buddy who is a fan of all things bourbon or barrel aged and he loved it, but I can't say that I'm buying into the bourbon/barrel aged crazed. This was a good beer and I would drink it again slash recommend to others, but just not my cup of tea I guess.
