A: Light amber with some excellent head retention. But honestly besides that, not a whole lot else to say. Rather average looking beer.
S: To me this has some remarkable similarities to a Barley wine, both in smell and taste. Typical Barley wine smells of burnt sugar, butterscotch, caramel, with some citric fruits thrown in there as well. Nothing real special going on with the smell, but it is still quite inviting.
T: Follows the nose, first taste is of burnt sugar and butterscotch. As it sits, flavors of citrus fruits and vanilla come out as well. The taste of vanilla is actually quite strong in fact, and goes along with the other flavors quite well. There is also a bit of spice and peat, which I am assuming comes from the fact that the beer has been aged in bourbon barrels. The malty backbone in this brew gives way to the taste of freshly baked bread. Flavor tones of copper also seem to come out, bringing to mind something more akin to an amber ale. This is a very complex beer. On the swallow, there is a definite presence of alcohol, but it is not biting by any means, in fact it complements everything else quite well. Very good tasting brew.
M: It's very creamy, and the carbonation is in perfect harmony with the beer, adding to the effect of the spicy undertones that come to the fore as the tasting session goes on. Very, very bitter on the back end. This beer is not kind and I would strongly advise against following it with a beer of less intensity. Seriously, you will not be able to taste anything for at least a few hours. That being said the taste is pleasant, leaving a bitter back bone that brings out the grapefruit as well as the other citric fruits present within the brew (i.e. oranges and something akin to lemon rind). A very satisfying mouthfeel.
Overall, this is a very good DIPA from Founder's and I would expect nothing less from them. However, it may not be quite up to the bar set by the other beers in the Founder's line. However, considering how incredible those beers tend to be, it is only a slight con. This is a very good DIPA, and if you are able to attain it, it is most definitely worth checking out for yourself. Seek it out and cheers my friends!
