From a 750 ml bottle into an IPA glass.

A - It has a golden hew. Head is offwhite, but brighter than many other IPAs.

S - You can definitely smell the barrel aging effect on the beer as it is less hops and more bourbon.

T - It's got a soft sweet taste upfront that is overpowered by the bitterness of the hops and barrel agedness. You can definitely taste the bourbon in it. You can't enjoy the hops as much.

M - The bourbon effect makes it a lot more boozy and a much slower sipper than your average IPA. It isn't an easy drinking beer, and it would probably better in smaller quantities.

O - The concept of a barrel aged IPA is really interesting to me. To me, an IPA should be drunk fast because of the extensive hopping. Of course, when IPAs were initially made and sent to India, they were stored in barrels. It's interesting to see an American take on this. Overall, interesting is the word I'd use to describe Doom. It met my textural appetite, but definitely did not meet my tastes.

Bottle to Hop Back Pint glass

A: It looks amber to orange in color with a white to beige head that leaves a good sized lacing. It is completely translucent and as about as clean as you can get the barrels did not cloud it up at all i guess.

S: Well it is definitely interesting if nothing else the bourbon definitely stands out it is not too powerful or overwhelming but it is there is with a little bit of chocolate hint to it. The bourbon is dominant but there is some hop smells in the background along with some malt for an almost farmhouse smell.

T: Wow the bourbon flavor is really prominent upfront; it has some nice flavor without being overpowering and definitely has some chocolate to it. Unfortunately on the other hand the hops are basically completely gone there is almost not bitterness or hop flavor at all. There is some malt sweetness but it is really just a pretty solid backbone nothing too special.

M: It is smooth and very drinkable for something that has so much bourbon flavor. The beer is also really thin which sort of throws me off as it is heavy in the flavor but feels light. This isn't necessarily a easy drinking beer but the feel certainly does help mitigate the strong flavors.

O: My overall feeling about this beer is "meh" it is good but it is not great, its not that it doesn't have anything special about it or that the bourbon flavor is not good it is more that I expected this beer to impress me and it really did not. Its worth a try if bourbon barrels are your thing if not definitely skip for the price.

750 ml bottle into a teku glass.

A - Pours a very clear burnt orange body. Three fingers worth of frothy bone-white foam sticks around for a while. Very sticky lacing with modest retention. A swirl creates a very strong head again.

S - Double Trouble peaking through a huge wave of bourbon. Starts off with some pine and tropical fruit before being consumed by butterscotch, oak, vanilla and smooth oak. The bitterness does clash a bit with the barrels. Noticeable alcohol.

T - Bitter grapefruit and resinous pine. The finish is of smooth caramel malt and even smoother bourbon. Loads of butterscotch, toffee and vanilla. The bitterness cuts through the rich flavors awkwardly. The mouth feel is nice and creamy. Alcohol is a bit warming. A little weird but damn good.

O - I've had a few BA IPA's in the past and this one seems to be the most effective. The double trouble is noticeable and it does make friends with the bourbon barrels. It's a bit confusing at first but after a few sips I got used to it and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I suppose I should preface this by saying that Double Trouble has been an all time favorite of mine for years and I highly regret not trying this the one time I had the chance when it was on draft as The Hand of Doom.

This beer pours a light bodied, relatively clear copper in color with a soapy one finger head. The nose smells like a distillery when you first step onto the grounds. There is oak, vanilla, and bourbon in the air. It also has this sweetness that reminds me of an aged wheatwine. The beer kind of reminds me of Lexington Bourbon Barrel Ale in terms of the nose. The flavors are definitely more bourbon and oak forward than expected. I don't know how long this was aged for but in my experience, Double Trouble doesn't exactly turn into a malt bomb if not consumed fresh. The DIPAs characteristics do not make themselves known at all. It really isn't too far off from Bourbon Barrel Ale. It just has more traditional beer influence than BBA, which I liken to bourbon and water. It is just so oaky and has a great amount of vanilla. It drinks light in body with a resonating aftertaste. Overall this bottle was much appealing than the bottles I tried a couple weeks back. It is somewhat enjoyable but not a beer necessarily deserving of high praise.

Bottle, poured into a pint glass.

The pour was pleasant. A finger or so of quickly dissipating, foamy white head. Clear light amber in colour, some light lacing on the glass and a few bubbles rising to the top.

When I took a whiff of it, the bouquet was replete with fruity hops, just a hint of bourbon in the nose. Strong citrus, and a light oakiness that holds back. The fruity smell overwhelms here, and it's not a bad thing.

Upon taking a sip, the complexity of flavor was not done justice by the bouquet at all. There's an oakiness, a bourbon punch, that hits you right from the get go, and a strong hops character that doesn't disappoint. The finish itself is almost completely bourbon though, a light trace of hops lingering on the palate. Still, interesting balance of flavors, and not something you're going to run into everyday.

On the palate, it does linger, a slight crispness and dry hop feel, but a silkier, syrupy bourbon feel. It's intriguing.

Overall, definitely something I recommend. It's going to run about $15 a pop, but if you just want to have a nice IPA, something a little different but still quality, and make an evening of it - this is your guy.

The nose is so complex. Sweet like a honey bubblegum. Brings out a great floral bouquet. Flavor is so soothing. Double trouble is great but the barrel aging really takes it over the top. Beautiful golden color. Very well crafted. I would recommend you get one asap.
