Appearance: glowing orangy amber body; the first glass will pour a somewhat clear golden color – then swirl the bottle and get the sediment into the mix. I don’t get much head – I know personal issue – but there is some sticky lacing … just some. Good body color but the lack of head: 3.75

Aroma: some floral mixed with some golden fruits, vanilla from the oak Bourbon barrels – smells closer to a Single Malt Scotch than a Bourbon to me. Sweet bready malts

Flavors: the vanilla oak barrel stands out front and center then the golden fruits with a touch of floral and grassy hops; slight peppery feel on the back of the palate which could be coming from the alcohol content and a little from the hoppy citrus on the finish.

Mouthfeel: low-moderate carbonation, alcohol bite on the tongue, peppery finish and aftertaste and the sweet Bourbon notes are in on the aftertaste (fruit and vanilla), wool like texture, oily. Don’t drink this ale ice cold get it on the warm side say 50 degrees to open the flavors and mouthfeel.

To the Point: The bourbon notes are ruling this ale and the hops are taking a back seat. Founders website said this is ‘hop heavy’ and ‘pungent hopped’ …

A good Bourbon Barrel IPA; better than others that had a cheap corn Bourbon taste; fun to review, interesting to taste, but would I drink it on a regular bases or look for its annual release … No. Would I look for their Kentucky Breakfast Stout – yes.

750 ml into an Allagash tulip.

A: Golden/burnt orange. Mostly clear with a slight bit of haze. Head dissipates
promptly but retains decent lacing throughout.

S: Mostly bourbon and vanilla, the hops don't really stand out very much on
the nose but are ever so slightly detectable. Verry mellow

T: Outstanding melding of the barrel notes and hop profile. Predominat vanilla
oakiness with a lasting hop bite on the back end.

M: The mouthfeel dances on that perfect middle ground for a DIPA, not watery
in the least bit and with good carbonation for the style.

O: If I'm going drink a regular DIPA I'm expecting to get my teeth kicked in with hoppiness. If it is going to be bourbon barrel aged, I'm looking for the hop profile to be mellowed out a bit, and this beer from Founders definitely delivers. If you're looking for a DIPA with extreme hoppiness I wouldn't reccomend this. If that's what youre looking for, don't complain about it, just don't buy something thats been aged dumbass! Hop flavors and aromas mellow with aging! I'm a huge fan of this beer from one of my favorite breweries

Served on-tap in a snifter at Sedona Taphouse

A: Orange/yellow hue and somewhat clear body. One and half finger of head.

S: Mild bourbon and its presence was not strong. Could pick up hints of caramel and floral notes.

T: Somewhat sweet and malty, subtle alcohol content, bit of bourbon. Nice taste but nothing that will stand out on its own.

M: Full-bodied, very drinkable considering the level of bourbon content, smooth and refreshing.

O: While it's a good boubon-aged IPA, it doesn't hit a home run for me. Would pick up a bottle to see how it does over time, depending on the price.

Pours clear and golden from the bottle with a big fluffy and creamy head. Aroma of floral citrus, vanilla, sweet candy sugar, lots of dry oak. Smells yummy. Flavor is new to me. Big vanilla notes mix nicely with the citrus almost like a piney grapefruit creamsicle. There is some alcohol on the finish. Still has a hop bitterness but the strong floral flavors are no longer there. Finishes pretty dry. Medium carbonation. A neat treatment that I am glad I got to try, but enjoy the Double Trouble on its own much more. Vanilla and oak really comes out as you get further in, especially after a little bit of spicy Thai food. Mixed feelings on this one. Really need to be in the mood for oak and vanilla. Pretty much what I expected but not sure it was the right time to pop it.
