Thanks to Eric (Holland ) for the share! I've been wanting to try this, but haven't gotten around to opening my bottle, or going out to get it on tap.

Definitely an "interesting" beer here. Poured seemingly normal for an IPA, as I would've expected, golden-honey color with a slight haze, and a small white head that receded to a retaining ringlet; dabs of lacing on the glass. There was quite a pronounced bourbon/vanilla profile right up front in the nose, which was pretty nice; soon thereafter, the hops came in, bitter, fruity, piney, more bitter; underlying notes of fusel alcohol. The taste was similar...I liked it for about 0.5 seconds or so, as the vanilla and bourbon came through right up front, but soon the hoppiness struck, and the flavors just clashed so much, it just wasn't enjoyable at all. Any smoothness from the bourbon melded with the otherwise intense Double Trouble hoppiness, producing an uncomfortable grainy booziness, with an extremely bitter finish and aftertaste. I was skeptical about this beer from the start--as were many people, I suppose--and my skepticism was pretty much justified. This beer really just didn't work. Mouthfeel was harsh, body was about medium, drinkability was...well, I had enough after 5 ounces.

Just for the hell of it, I'm going to age my bottle for at least 5 years and see what this beer turns into. I doubt aging could cause any further damage, so why not?

Enjoyed as part of a Founders event at Bier Station in Kansas City. I just missed the cases of Doom that came to this market, so I was ecstatic to hear that they'd be doing pours from the bottle.

Appearance - A hazy orange-yellow with a half finger of cream-colored foam that dissipates quickly, leaving a film of spotty lacing on top of the body. Holding it up to the light reveals tones of apricot and peach flesh in a murky, unfiltered liquid.

Smell - I had a pour of this right next to the Double Trouble base beer, and the stark difference in aroma is fascinating. Hops are present, but comparatively, it seems almost nonexistent, instead being replaced by musty oak and hints of vanilla.

Taste - As with the smell, the difference between this and the base beer is almost comical. Like a case study in how barrel aging can change a beer. Hop bitterness and acidity mostly missing . Bourbon characteristics and esters with boozy notes of caramel and bitterness from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel - On the high side of medium bodied, with low carbonation yielding a creamy, luscious nature to the feel.

Overall a nice effort, but there are half a dozen Founders beers I'd choose to have again before this one. I will say that I haven't had many barrel-aged DIPAs or IPAs, or even barrel-aged beers that are light in hue, for that matter. Perhaps some roasty malts would have gone a long way to balance out the booze and sweetness.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clear orange body. Small head. Thin collar.

Smell - Musty pine hop. Caramel malt. Faint barrel.

Taste - Pine hops. Caramel. Bourbon comes through here. Vanilla and oak. Bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Bitter. Not smoothed out by the barrel. Retains its IPA character.

Overall - Had this next to Naughty Temple and the barrel is nowhere near as good.
