On tap at Piper's Pub. Pour is hazed golden amber with white head. Nose is light bourbon, sticky caramel, pine resign, touch of pine sol. Taste is more bourbon, still sticky resigny hop, notes of citrus and lots of pine. Body is full, fairly assertive carb, syrupy texture.

On-tap 7/9/13 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep gold color, with a large off-white head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains fruity citrus, caramelized malts, vanilla and subdued hops.

T: The taste starts out very sweet with flavors of caramel, vanilla and a little citrus. Then a hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is subdued by the intense oak-aging essence. There’s a slightly alcohol sting a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down dangerously easy, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a very aged 2IPA to drink for a long time.

Served on tap in a snifter

Appearance – Served clear golden-orange colored brew with a small one half finger white head. The head faded moderately fast to leave a good level of lace on the sides of the glass

Smell- The aroma is on the sweeter side with a good deal of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, and papaya) with other aromas of sweet vanilla and some apple juice. Along with these sweeter smells are some lighter hop aromas of pine and grapefruit with a moderate, but not overpoweringly strong, bourbon smell.

Taste – The taste begins malty and sweet with lots of caramel, bread, and the tropical fruit that was heavy in the nose. As the taste advances some vanilla as well as a little bit of bourbon begin working their way onto the tongue along with some of the hops, which up to this point were rather subdued. The bourbon grows slightly stronger more toward the end with the hop of a pine and grapefruit nature building as well. While the hops gain strength they never really out compete the malt and sweet tastes with the end flavor that is left on the tongue being one of a sweeter fruit and lightly hopped and bourbon boozy taste.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the creamier and smoother side with a carbonation level that was rather average to slightly below average. A rather nice mouthcoating feel for the rather sweet flavors of the brew with it highlighting well the bourbon flavors as well.

Overall- A rather tasty brew overall, but a little light on the hop to balance out the malt for an Imperial IPA. A nice try, but nothing to go nuts over.

Appearance: 750mL bottle poured into Duvel tulip. Colour is a light hazy orange. Head is a finger in height and fluffy. Some visible carbonation. The head fades quickly to a thin film.

Smell: Sweet alcohol mixed with bready malts and citrus hops. Brown sugar, molasses, and yeast as well.

Taste: Very strong hops and bourbon flavours. Not as balanced as I had hoped for - the flavours are all there but they don't sing together in harmony.

Mouthfeel: Medium body has a silky touch with a carbonated bite and sticky finish.

Overall: A little too extreme for my own tastes. This is a boozy hop bomb if I've ever had one. Still a very good beer done in the Founders spirit, though.

Thanks to maximumu13 for sending this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from 25.4 oz. bottle into a CCB pint glass.

A: Hazy orangish-gold, with a one-finger white head and low visible carbonation.

S: Bourbon, oak, hops (pine, resin, bitter citrus), and vanilla tannins.

T: Bourbon, then a hop punch (pine, citrus, grass) and vanilla. Malt sweetness with some caramel, and big oak tannins. There's more bourbon burn after the swallow - lasting almost as long as drinking actual bourbon.

M: Medium to full-bodied, carbonation sensation on the low side, and the alcohol is quite noticeable.

O: I don't think this is a bad beer, the flavor combinations just didn't work for me. I have difficulty fully evaluating a beer that does the things the label says it's going to do, but I don't end up likely the combination. This is quite obviously a big bourbon-aged IIPA. Maybe some age would have let the flavors meld some more and made it more enjoyable.

Doom on bottle bought at Whole Foods Columbus Circle, served in an eight-ounce glass.

Appearance: A cross between a Belgian beer and an American IPA, with two fingers of head that last and great lacing. Clear like apple juice but also glossy and deep like bourbon.

Smell: Pinneaple juice and sour, grassy, some tartness. Apple, cider. Sugar, frosting, caramel. Damn sweet as the sipping progresses. A prolonged sniff of this will fill you up!

Taste: Whisky-soaked cake, syrup. Subtle hoppy finish, tingles in the roof of the mouth. Bourbon is present but well distributed. Pineapple, coconut. Tastes like the beach, oh-so-tropical. Hops are easy.

Mouthfeel: Soft and gentle, carbonation is just right. Dry spicy finish. Peppery. Smooth bourbon all around. Medium body and flavor.

Overall: Starts great and exciting, then dies down/becomes repetitive, but still a good brew. Supremely drinkable, never boozy. My first bourbon-barrel IPA, reminds of Evolution Menagerie #4, a rum-barrel-aged DIPA.
