Huge thanks to Greg for splitting this fine brew.

Large format bottle into a pint glass.

A- Rich, golden amber body. Abundant head with great retention. Awesome stick. Moderate carbonation.

S- complex. Lots of resinous hops at first. Leafy and tobacco-like. Brown sugar and leather. Vanilla really opens up with warmth. Definite barrel character.

T- as complex as the aroma. Straddles the barleywine/double IPA line quite nicely. Sweet malts are something of brown sugar and quality caramel. Tobacco-like hopping. As with aroma, vanilla notes strengthen with warmth.

M- Rich and full bodied. ABV well hidden throughout. Moderate, though delicate, carbonation keeps up with higher viscosity. A nice sipper.

O- This is a special beer. While barrel aged, it kept a "fresh" quality. Something to settle in and enjoy. I'd lay down the cash for another to return the favor to a good friend who decided to share this one.

The smell is so unique on this beer. Right away i can't help but smell the alcohol and bourbon of this beer. However it is not overpowering as you also get some earthy hops in the background as well as the sweet smell of vanilla.

When tasting you definitely get the vanilla and bourbon right off the bat. There is an alcohol burn as it goes down but a nice subtle one that does not interfere with the enjoyment. When the sip is over you get a little of the hop bitterness.

Overall i think this is a great and unique beer. I would have to drink it at the end of the night as I am sure it would overpower anything else after that.

Bottle from JTDay. You da man.

COLOR is a bright golden/yellow IPA.

SMELLS of light bourbon-y sweetness followed by grassy, earthy hops. I get some pine as well but the bourbon is more prominent.

TASTES almost exactly like one of them malt-forward hoppy American barleywines at first. It has that west coast citrus crispness, yet has a nice chocolate-y mouthfeel throughout. The hops acts as a wonderful countermelody to balance out the sweet bourbon mouthfeel. Gradually I'm tasting some rich apricot flavor in the finish. The vanilla from the bourbon is merely a backdrop in texture on the tongue.

This beer was extremely under-appreciated at the bottle share I went to. I was practically the only one finishing the last half of this 750mL (thank GOD). I'm glad people of BA gave it a higher rating. As big and crazy as this beer seems, Founders did a great job keeping the bourbon light in order to compliment the crisp nature of the DIPA hops. This beer can taste like a blonde barleywine in some respect, especially with some age. Come to think of it, I may want to get more of this....
