I have a fellow beer geek friend at work who keeps telling me to try anything I can find from Founder's brewery. For some reason, I just never got around to it until I finally had a Red Rye about a month ago. I was very impressed (and hopefully will find some soon to do a proper review). After that intro to the brewery, I was thrilled to find the Centennial IPA (my favorite style) at the local Whole Foods here in Evanston, IL.
APPEARANCE: Very pretty, transparent golden/copper look, but had almost no head at all. In fact, after pouring Centennial IPA into a standard 16 oz. pint glass, the thin head only covered about 50% of the surface on top. As I continued to drink, however, the head thickened to thinly cover the entire surface and it left a thin lacing which slid down the glass throughout the entire beer, always staying just an inch or so above the surface.
NOSE: The smell was strong, but not complex. It had a strong, but pleasant citrus smell.
TASTE: This was the third beer I had from this six pack (my first during this session however). One thing I noticed with each of the three beers was that the very first sip seemed to provide a burst of citrus flavor right up front - the word that came to mind was 'bubble', kind of a flavor bubble. Each sip afterwards that burst of flavor became less and less intense, but no less desirable. The citrus up front gave way to a bitter, slightly smoky finish.
FEEL: The thin head left little carbonation. This was probably the most disappointing aspect of the beer. If it weren't for the flavor I would almost think I was drinking water.
OVERALL: After all the hype and anticipation I found Centennial IPA was a solid, but slightly disappointing beer. Good, but not great. That said, I think it would be an excellent introduction to the style for someone who isn't necessarily an IPA drinker.
