While new wave brewers dick around with mango/passionfruit/tropcail juice bomb bullshit, there's this: piney, citrusy, and a brown sugar malt base. This is a delicious IPA that puts a lot of the nouveau IPA stuff to shame. It shared that interesting brown sugar note with some other wonderful brews, notably stuff like Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye or Red Rocket. Anyway, super satisfying drink that I hope never makes way for the some tropical fruit salad IPA that's so du jour these days. (488 characters)

L: it has a medium dark amber color with a one finger frothy off white head
S: strong crisp hop scent almost piney with just a small hint of citrus fruit.
T: the beginning flavor is saturated by carbonation followed by light hop flavor finishing with a slight bitterness which transforms into an aftertaste of slight lime tatse.
F: the mouth feel is typical of an ipa. Not too thick not too thin allthough the carbonation creates too much of a powdery sense.
O: this beer to me is mediocre. While it's clear it's an ipa, the body of this beer is dull just near the end of swallow leaving it's overall satisfaction questionable. (627 characters)

Straight from the can, smelled like earth, grapefruit, citrus, bread, tasted a little piney, grapefruity, a little urine maybe, nice malty backbone, sorta sticky, balanced, enjoyed very much, I drank 4 in a row, glad i revisited. (229 characters)

Poured into a teku glass.

A: Opaque golden amber with a one finger eggshell white head that lingers. The thick foamy top has the best retention I've seen in a while. Thick, foamy lacing.

S: Grapefruit, piney hops, floral, bready malts.

T: Follows nose. Creamy, low bitterness. A clean finish. A smooth, easy drinker, even at 7.2%.

M: Medium with medium carbonation.

O: If this were a lower ABV it would be a terrific session beer. Still a nice west coast hopper. (478 characters)

Picked up a six-pack at the Rhinelander Trig's Cellar 70. The bottling date states that this one is a little over two-and-a-half months old. Poured right from the fridge into my Samuel Smith pint glass.

L: Pours a deep apricot amber with three fingers of dense, billowy off-white head that sticks around for a good long while and leaves substantial lacing on the glass. Crystal-clear, with profuse visible carbonation.

S: Pine and tropical fruit (pineapple and mango are most easily discernible) hop notes and cracker and caramel malts are prominent in the nose. There are also earthy/herbal notes present. Just a touch of clear alcohol in the mix.

T: Cracker and slightly more robust malts are there at the front. Accompanying these are some assertive pine and tropical fruit hop flavors. Pineapple and mango are the fruit flavors that stand out the clearest. The middle brings on more earthy and herbal flavor notes, along with a bit of clear alcohol flavor. The back end has got assertive pine hop flavor, which balances nicely with the malt profile. This one has some bitter pine hop lingering in the aftertaste.

F: On the lighter side of medium-bodied, this one feels just a touch watery and flat. It does have some nice smoothness, but I wish there was a bit more creaminess. Just a bit of stick to this one, but it's far from syrupy.

O: This is an IPA that I've hadn't gotten around to trying again for some time. The first time I had it, it must have been an old bottle because it didn't taste nearly as good as this one. This IPA delivers some great hop aroma and flavor, particularly the fruit notes. If you're looking for a solid single IPA with a relatively high ABV, this is one you could return to again and again. I definitely recommend. (1,757 characters)

Poured from 12 oz. bottle to tulip glass.

A: Nice cloudy burnt orange with a small tan head.
S: Fresh grapefruit peel. Light aromas of peach, pineapple, and fresh grass.
T: Nice malty sweetness up front. Middle of the taste is fruity with a grapefruit-like bitterness. Ends nice and crisp.
M: Medium. The unfiltered aspect makes it a bit creamy.
O: Nice pretty balanced beer. I was hoping for a more hoppier beer, but maybe I had an old bottle. Still pretty good. (464 characters)

a: burnt orange/caramel color that has a slight chill haze. 1.5 finger solid off-white head. looks like its almost strong enough to rest a coin on

s: big shot of tropical fruits upfront. juicy pineapple, apricot and passionfruit. a nice sweet malt presence underneath the hops. a very tiny brown sugar note in here as well. at the end is a fresh cracker aroma as well. great aroma on this

t: not quite as juicy as the nose. there is a mixture of pineapple and bitter grapefruit that you pick up on right away followed by a nice sweet caramel which helps to immediately balance out the initial bitterness. towards the end it is slightly herbal - like tea leafs. there is a mild residual bitterness that lingers in the mouth

m: medium mouthfeel, with a normal carbonation level for an IPA

o: really good stuff here. bitter, sweet, and refreshing. it has a nice transition of flavors that work well together and leave you wanting another sip. definitely recommend this one. if you like bitter beers you'll enjoy this, and if you don't i believe you still can enjoy this as well (1,094 characters)

A nicely balanced and mellow lunchtime IPA. Healthy orange color, not overly intense. Very mellow on the nose but then again I'm nursing a cold today so take that for what it's worth. Bit of citrus and pine in the flavor.  Reasonable lacing. Medium mouthfeel. Medium to light booze. Tastes a lot like a more mellow implementation of a Racer 5. (344 characters)

L: A clingy 1” finely bubbled white foam collar perches atop a hazy copper amber pour.
S: Piney, earthy hops with fruit and citrus.
T: Big tropical fruit flavors and melon drive a fairly dry palate to an assertive but very pleasant lingering bitter finish. The bitterness is more botanical than pithy or citrus rind. This is a hop driven beer supported by some light biscuit in the background.
F: Rich, creamy testure makes for a very soft palate and lightens the body to medium.
O: The rich, creamy texture and assertive bitterness make this beer a delight to drink. (573 characters)

L - medium Amber, quick dissipating head
S - nice dank earthy hop resin
T - nice blend, something I can't put my finger on in the aftertaste
F - clean refreshing
O - wouldn't call it world class, but not a bad beer. Taste didn't quite live up to the smell... (259 characters)

Great color out of the growler. I found this at a rsndom liquor store on tap. I was pretty excited to find this on tap. Unfortunately the lady pouring it didn't seem to know how to get it in the growler. I got it home and it was pretty flat. The smell was good and it did taste great. I just wish it wasn't flat (313 characters)

I’m trying a variety of different beers today and this 7.2% ABV IPA happens to be among the mix. I am glad to be reviewing this one, because I tried it years ago before I was into reviewing and now I have the opportunity to attempt to describe it in all its glory. Founder’s is a great brewery and you should try this one and also their All Day IPA.

Look-Pours a pretty clear amber color with copper hues in the light. The head is almost nonexistent due to the sugar content, but leaves a slight lacing on the glass.

Smell-It has a nice malty aroma with plenty of earthy resinous hops that appear in the nose. It has been awhile since I got these aromas on the nose instead of the tongue. The resin comes through nicely and maybe a caramel and amber malt tinge to it also.

Taste-The flavor has more of a malt profile than the nose picks up on. The hops sneak up on you after a while and are mostly piney and earthy, but somehow it is unique and not like every other brew. I think they manage a hop variety that is high in resins and pine which somehow play well with the malts to make for a drinkable variety that is sufficiently distinct from every other IPA.

Mouthfeel-I get a strong sticky and syrupy feel that forms a nice coating on the tongue.

Overall-If you don’t pay attention then it might seem run of the mill, but for those advanced drinkers, you will appreciate the nuances of this one. (1,411 characters)

Almost clear, dark golden, copper big fluffy white head. Aroma, alot of sweet malt, citrus hoppy, grass. Medium to full body, creamy smooth mouth feel. The taste is sweet caramel, fruit, mango, tangerine, orange. The finish is bitter with grapefruit. Very nice balanced and well made. (284 characters)

Looks great: pours amber with a finger of head. Nice shine when the light comes through.

Aroma is a nice balance of malt and hop, with a bit of an earthy smell going on. When you take a sip, the malts hit first, followed by something sort of piney, a nice crescendo to caramel, and some slight hoppy bitterness as the taste dissipates. The hop is prevalent here, but there's not so much that it's unenjoyable (not going to please the extreme hop bandwagonners, however).

The feel is nice and rich, giving you a satisfying experience without weighing you down. A bit heavy for an IPA, but that's what makes it better than most. I would not mince my words if there were only one more of these in the cooler. This is a Damn Good Beer. (734 characters)

Smells of candied fruits, piney/resiny hops, and orange-citrus. Taste is much more resin/pine than fruit-forward (heavy chinook for bittering?) and very bitter tasting for 65 ibus. Bitterness at the end almost has a butyric acid quality, which is not fun. Would probably pass on this unless in the mood for an exceptionally bitter IPA to accompany a cheese plate. 3/5 (368 characters)

12oz can, dated 7.3.2015, poured into a 2014 Founders KBS snifter glass.

The beer pours a bright copper color, orange hues, nice clarity with a light haze and a big, foamy off white head that has good retention and spotted lace. The aroma is nice, resinous hop profile, piney, earthy, sappy, sticky, lightly spicy with a big blast of sticky caramel and amber malt sweetness. The flavors showcase more of the malt profile than the nose led on, sticky, sweet, thick and smooth before the hoppy flavors sneak out from underneath. Lots of pine, grassy, raw hops, a bit of citrus rind, light acidity with nice bitterness that lingers well. The mouthfeel is good, coating, smooth, full bodied without being heavy, lively carbonation that isn't too prickly and a dry finish.

Verdict: A good IPA from Founders, certainly an American staple, but a bit heavy and one dimensional for me. Lots of pine and citrus rind and for someone who loves a piney beer, this will be a homerun, but my palate leans towards something that's a bit fruitier, brighter and more delicate. Still, this satisfies my hop cravings time after time, at a great price point. (1,141 characters)

Great flavor off the bat which turns into a piney bitter taste that lingers for a while. Dry with some malty sweetness. Not the most bitter beer I've had but more than the 65 IBUs would have you think. A very fine IPA. (218 characters)

Don't have Founders in Maryland. Was in NY for a conference and bought a 6 of this at a place near the hotel. Blew my mind. I'm not one of those "I never give out a 5 because it doesn't exist, etc." Ok, ok, maybe it's not perfect, but I am going to award a 5 or 2. Out of about 375 beers, I have given about six 5s. This is one of them. (337 characters)

Appearance: Pours a amber/orange color.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle.

A: Pours a goldish amber with one finger of off white head. Retention and lacing are solid.

S: Citrus, orange, mango, grapefruit, sweet bread, and pine like hops.

T: Earthy hops, citrus, orange peel, sweet malts, floral hops and grapefruit on the finish.

M: Medium bodied, mid- to high carbonation, crisp and bitter on the finish.

O: A great IPA that stands out among the crowd. A great beer that enjoy on the regular. (451 characters)

Hops are the main player here (of course), but the malt backbone contributes just the right amount of malty sweetness for a perfect balance. As the beer warms, the malt becomes deeper and richer and gives the beer a bit the character of a porter. (246 characters)

Nice IPA of a somewhat transparent amber/orange color and a small beige foam with some bubbles.
Smell is extremely hoppy and fruity (notes of grapefruit, orange, papaya and banana).
Taste is a bit more complex; somewhat crispy and malty with grainy notes. Fruits and hops are still there but are not in highlight.
Body is kind of light and carbonation appropriate. Alochol is strangely hidden - probably by the bitterness that is at high and nice level.
That's a good IPA, but let's not exagerate. (497 characters)

I'm not a big fan of IPAs but picked this up curious to see founders take on the style. What a pleasant surprise, this is the best IPA I've had yet. Malty goodness with a strong hop presence that isn't at all overwhelming like many of the style. Phenomenal. (257 characters)

The aroma is hops, underlying malts and some citrus and earthiness. The flavor is relatively balanced between the hops and malts, although it does lean towards the hops. Among the easiest drinking IPAs out there, a very solid IPA overall. (240 characters)
