2013 bottle

Appearance: Golden beauty with a nice 1 finger head and ample carbonation.

Smell: Quite aromatic, with notes of pine, malt, mango and orange.

Taste: Nice blend of subtle malty sweetness and bitterness up front. Eventually, the malts fade and the bitterness becomes more noticeable, lasting into the finish.

Mouthfeel: On the lighter side with mild carbonation.

Overall: Pretty much tasted as I expected it to. It's a sessionable IPA that's not very complex, but give me this over a BMC any day of the week.

Poured into a pint glass. The color is light golden with lots of clarity. There is a small off-white head; not a lot of retention.

The aroma is full of strong rich tropical fruit. There are subtle notes of pine and citrus. Oh boy this smells great.

This is very dry compared to most IPA's. The hops taste bitter and herbal with lots of grassyness. There may not be enough malt sweetness here to perfectly balance the hops, but I like it anyway.

This is light bodied with medium carbonation. There is a nice crispness to this adding to its drinkability. This is great stuff for those who like bone dry and bitter.

Clear light amber with a two finger white head with decent retention and spotty lacing. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, and pineapple.

Has a nice combination of bitterness and sweetness, with bitterness being a little more dominant. I can taste grapefruit, pine, pineapple, and a little bit of bread malt. There is a lot of flavor for a 4.70 % abv beer.

Medium bodied with average carbonation, and it finishes dry. This is a really nice IPA. I am very impressed by how much flavor there is in this low abv beer. Well done.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rich gold with thin white head and some nice lacing.

Smell: Spicy and dry, with citrus and floral notes.

Taste: Very dry malt base with citrus notes of grapefruit and bitter orange. Finish has floral notes that are spicy and fairly bitter.

Feel: Firm, light body with the carbonation nicely in check (as expected in a Bitter-like beer). Extremely dry finish.

Overall: Another winner from Founders and another delicious session beer, even if not quite as good as Surly Bitter Brewer, Brau Brothers Hopsession, and Lagunitas DayTime.

Speaking of these beers in general, I am a little annoyed at the marketing gimmick of calling these session beers IPAs or Super Pale Ales. They're not. They are extremely Americanized forms of the English Bitter. A least Surly recognizes that their version is Bitter-like, as opposed to calling it an IPA. Can we make an American Bitter category, and be done with the ridiculous marketing? That said, I love this "style".

Poured from a bottle in a Duvel Glass. Bottled: 2/11/13

A - About half an inch of white head which quickly fades away. Light lacing. Light golden in color.

S - Nice hoppy nose. Floral and citrusy aroma which is very inviting.

T - Light bitterness, nothing compared to the nose. Piney and even throughout but very little malt balance

M - Light body and medium carbonation. Seems thin for a beer from Founders.

O - This beer is very average, below average compared with the Founders line up. I hate to say this but this more fits an IPA that the big boys would produce to enter the market. Its very light and you could definitely drink a lot of it. I wouldn't actively seek it out, but I would drink it in the warmer months.

A - Minimal (less than a finger's worth) snowy white slightly lush crisp head... The head quickly fizzes away leaving a full veil of slightly frothing lacing and moderate collar... Loads of moderate to rapid paced swirling carbonation... The color is a pale golden straw color with a slight glowing amber hue... A slight bit of lacing clings to the glass...

S - A very inviting complex hoppy nose that is far from overpowering... Grapefruit... Orange zest... Some floral hops... A very light malt base comprised of graham crackers and biscuit...

T - An enjoyable bitterness to start... Lots of piney and floral hop notes... Lemon zest... A light pale malt base barely registers... The bitterness is even and consistent throughout...

M - Light to medium bodied... Limited carbonation... Ever so slightly on the thin side... Goes down easily with each and every sip...

D - This is an ideal alternative to the not so hoppy spring and summer seasonal offerings... Highly quaffable... Quite refreshing... Simple, but with a enough depth, character, and complexity to keep it interesting and enjoyable... Not my favorite Founders offering, but one that has a spot in my spring/summer rotation... I would have no problem drinking several of these in a sitting, but I guess that's the point...

Poured into a mason jar from a 12 oz bottle.

Pours a nice clear golden color with some slight copper hints. There is a nice half inch head that forms that is white and pretty dense. Nice sticky lacing as the head recedes.

Aroma of citrus hops with some nice grapefruit notes. Sweet juicy hops are present. The hops are pungent and very mouthwatering. Then there is a nice earthy grain a biscuity malt bread to the aroma. Some slight malt sweetness balanced very well by the clean hop notes.

The flavor starts off with nice citrus hop notes, similar to the nose. The citrus notes are very crisp and clean with light grapefruit and some tangerine. There is some bready biscuity taste that follows the nice hoppy notes. Very drinkable and approachable. Balanced and refreshing.

This is a good brew. Low ABV with tons of flavor.
