From: Binny's
Bottled: 6/7/12
Glass: Tulip

Pours a 1cm head of fairly clean, white foam, made up of small and medium-sized bubbles, which eventually fades to a thick ring around the glass and a few sparse islands of residual foam atop the beer's body. Lacing exists, but is fairly minimal, a few spots and lines that exist after each sip. The beer's body is semi-hazy, golden-orange out of light, a brighter orange when near a source of luminescence. Carbonation is visible, largely streaming from the base of the tulip glass.

Dank hop aroma, full of grapefruit citrus with twists of unripe apricot and peach, a touch of cumin, all atop a pleasant pale malt base. In general, a substantial and fairly amazing collection of scents for a session brew.

Taste is surprisingly light, yet full of fresh fruit flavors, including some peach, mango, juicy mild grapefruit. Specifically, the taste begins with some mild pale malt sweetness alongside light citrus and mango esters. Mid-palate features substantial grapefruit and grapefruit rind bitterness and flavor over a very modest malt base. Back of palate picks up continued, though milder, bitterness along with some peach flavors. Aftertaste is quite bitter, with a bit of distinct grapefruit rind and cumin spice flavor.

The body of the beer is fairly light, perhaps medium-light in weight, with substantial carbonation that prickles the palate slightly, but also foams the beer up substantially. The result is a slightly harsh, yet overall smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Finish is quite dry, with little to no stickiness left around the palate.

AP: pours a golden yellow with great clarity, eggshell white head.

AR: Grassy and earthy with slight citrus notes.

TS: Very balanced, lightly bodied, freshly cut grass, lemon.

MF: Decent mouthfeel, above average carbonation.

OV: A good example of the style, packing the great flavors of a Founders IPA into a sessionable beer.

Bottle poured into a pint glass

A - Light amber with hints of gold near the edges. Light carbonation drifting upwards. Slightly reflective and slightly opaque. Small head sits on top and dissipates quickly.

S - Pine and grapefruit make up the nose on this one.

T - Bitter piney and grapefruit hops hit you up front. They bring enough flavor to let you know this is a craft beer but they arent overly strong. I will say they bring a lot of flavor for an under 5% ABV beer. Ther is also a slight wheat crispness that hits in the middle of the beer. There is a light pine flavor that lingers in the finish

MF - Light body with light carbonation. Has a slight resin stickiness in the middle p. the finish leaves a nice resin coating that goes well with the piney finish

O - Overall, a great session beer from Founders that hits the mark. At under 5% ABV, you could drink a lot of these and you would not be missing out on any flavor of bigger beers

Bottle labeled 5/5/12.

Appearance: Slightly hazy light orange with a small foamy head that receded quickly.

Smell: Subtle citrus with a caramel backbone. Smells fruity and light.

Taste: Subtle hop bitterness with a citrus fruit character. Balanced by subtle sweet malts that are proportional to the hop profile.

Mouthfeel: Light on the tongue with above average carbonation.

Overall: Subtle flavors left my palate wanting more. Still, it achieves its intended purpose as a sessionable IPA that has enough flavor to call it above average. I think there are plenty of hopped up pales around the 5% range that pack much more flavor.

On-tap at Slater's 50/50 (Liberty Station). What's Founders doing in San Diego? On to the beer:

All day IPA indeed. This beer is an orangish yellow colored beer, showing very good head retention and lace. The nose is a powerful one, dry yet full of hops. Clean, crisp citrus and pine in this one. And the taste goes along that way as well. What makes this fun to drink is besides having a relatively low ABV, is that is really does tastes like a very good, lower gravity IPA, and not to be confused with a pale ale. This is recommended for sure, especially during the lunch hour.
