Bottle into Sam Adams sensory glass. Big thanks to Ian (SincereNC) for this fantastic extra.
Pours darkest brown bordering on black, with a one-finger head on top that settles quickly into a thin smattering of bubbles. No real retention, some light lacing.
Nose is very nice - big grapefruit is noticeable right from the beginning, complemented by beautiful underlying notes of chocolate (prominent) and dark candied fruits, brown sugar, and a light nuttiness in there as well. Big alcohol presence contributes some spicy heat. Nicely put together, probably a 4.2 for me.
Taste is big, hoppy, and boozy from the get go - grapefruit rind bitterness, big alcohol bite, and a nice, chocolaty malt background with just a bit of burnt caramel at first sip. Astringent hoppiness persists from beginning to end, though mid-palate definitely sees the complex malt body emerge a bit more - fore-mentioned chocolate is there, along with notes of treacle and molasses, bit of earthy tobacco, underlying nuttiness that almost gets swallowed up by the big, resiny bitterness.
Mouthfeel is certainly full-bodied, carbonation has plenty of bite, though the bitterness is a bit harsher and more astringent than I generally am a fan of. This is certainly something that would be be toned down over time - would love to try one of these in a couple of years - but right now it's got a bit too much bite for my taste; ends up linking up with the alcohol heat unpleasantly.
Decently drinkable, and I can absolutely appreciate it. Though I definitely feel it could use some time to come into its own, much like Bigfoot.
