Served from a 12oz bottle into a Crooked Stave tulip. Vintage 2010 obviously. Cellar temp.

Appearance- Black with one finger of sticky bubbly mocha head that lasted about a minute and left some nice lacing.

Smell- Strong presence. Don't even need to lift it to my nose to smell it and I have a cold while writing this. Sweet bourbon and cherry, caramel malts, oak, vanilla, light cocoa. Reminds me of Adam.

Taste- Ok the hops are still there. I imagine they were real aggressive when fresh. Light vanilla, coffee, oak, muted earthy hops. No booze taste, but heat is there. The hops really linger.

Mouthfeel- Smooth, moderate carbonation, medium booze heat, and hop lingering dryness at the finish.

Overall- Was this beer fantastic three years ago? I bet it was. Is it past it's prime now? Maybe. Not a bad beer, but I imagine it was far superior fresh. The hops that remain are quite astounding actually. A unique beer that people should try if they can find one.

Thanks, 1noa!

(Aged for 3 years)

Nearly black in color, though truly a very dark brown. Small to moderately-sized dark brown head of moderately sized bubbles. Decent stick, especially for the age and known (somewhat) high ABV.

I really like the aroma on this quite a bit. Lots of dark malts, a touch of coffee, definite oxidation, but complementary, just a hint of a licorice character, and some raisin. All very nice and appropriate for a 3-year old black barleywine.

The flavor is nice, as well, with the dark malts, oxidation, raisin, and very mild licorice character combining nicely. The lingering finish is very nice. Though there's a little bit of a char character, there's also some chocolate candy bar and mild roast that seems to go real nice together that just lingers on and on.

Medium to close to full in body for the style. Somewhat chewy. Moderate carbonation for the style.

Very tasty. I wouldn't want to sit on this any longer. Drink now if you're still holding on to bottles.

Sept. 2013 Update. Enjoyed my very last bottle for my birthday. Still great but I would say it is on the other side of peak. Drink now.

March 2013 review below:
A: Pours a slightly translucent reddish black. Little head or lacing but fairly well carbonated.

S: Malt, caramel, alcohol, vanila, fig, cherry, some earthy tones.

T: The taste has smoothed out since I had it fresh two years ago. The hops are mostly gone and now the deep malty caramel tastes stand out. Not sweet, this has aged quite nicely, I do not see it improving any more with age so enjoy one now. There is a nice bitter roast finish to this beer. Deeper, subtle earthy tones linger on the tongue.

M: Still nicely carbonated, medium bodied.

O: This is a great beer with big bold flavor. I would not call this a classic style American Barlywine, more of a hybrid beer. Whatever its designation, I could drink this everyday. If only I could, I wish I had stocked up when I had the chance. A great, bold, complex and balanced beer.
