notes form 12/7/10
Deep brown/black pour with a small creamy hard. Leaves a lot of lacing behind.
Huge amount of nutmeg in the smell, a bit overpowering. Also some notes of vanilla.
Taste is similar to smell, with a lot of nutmeg, some subtle vanilla and some cinnamon as well. Leaves a spicy tingle on the tongue. Some earthy roasted malts as well.
Medium mouthfeel with a lingering spiciness on the tongue. Seems borderline too thin for a porter.
Overall, I enjoyed this holiday porter and would have , but would like to see the nutmeg scaled back on future batches.

Notes from 12/7/10.
Pours black with a 1 finger sized off white head. Great "wall" like lacing.
Scents of cinnamon, sweet chocolate malts, and brown sugar.
Excellent balance in the taste with flavors of cardamom, cinnamon, brown sugar, and allspice next to a nice roasty porter taste. The bitterness is slight adding to the nice balance.
Medium in the mouth with a clean aftertaste.
This is a very well done spiced beer. Definitely my favorite Founders spiced beer and a new favorite among Christmas ales.

Picked up a growler of this from the taproom in Grand Rapids.
Pours a nicely sized head.
Color is opaque black.
Smell is quite surprising, with a nutmeg/allspice/almost eggnogish type of aroma. It really does give off the characteristics of a holiday beer.
First sip is interesting. On one hand, you have a dark, caramelized, bitter coffee flavor you expect from a stout. At the same time, you have the remaining festive overtones of the holiday spices that give the beer character. It's really quite an intriguing combination, and it's one that works excellently from the tap.
If you're in the Grand Rapids area, I'd head down to the brewpub and try this sometime. It really is worth it.
