12oz bottle into red wine glass.
Appearence is as advertised, dark and rich. No light is getting through this baby, even during the pour the stream was opaque with barely a hint of burgundy. The head is not huge, but has a nice brown color and leaves a few spotty suds along the glass as it recedes.
The smell is subtle but consists mainly of dark roasted malts a hint of coffee, and a hint of cacao. A good swirl brings up a vague earthy hint presumably from the hops.
Speaking of the hops, with 45 IBUs listed on the bottle I expected it to have a little more bitterness to it. Surprisingly the balance is perfect! The malts, while well roasted, impart a nice sweetness that those hops balance to perfection bringing about a well balanced porter that stops just shy of stout territory. There's a slight alcohol warming if sipped across the tongue with a good amount of air, but otherwise not noticeable. Not as complex as one of my favorite porters Lone Riders Dead Eye Jack, but excellent nonetheless.
Mouthfeel is spot on. Just right for a full bodied porter or an average stout. Smooth and lightly carbonated.
Very drinkable I could go through several of these over a cool afternoon or a cold evening with friends or at home with a good book.
