355ml bottle poured into a tulip glass

Look: Dark brown, almost black and opaque to go with it. Dark khaki/tan head with considerable retention

Smell: Dark malts, coffee and chocolate. Puts me in mind of a 'proper' chocolate stout although this obviously isn't marketed as such. Slightly 'burnt' roasted malt edge too. Oh yes.

Taste: Again, coffee, roasted malts and chocolate with the faintest hint of alcohol bite. Quite earthy, with a lot going on, but none of the flavours seems to overpower the others. That's good going, and it ticks all of the boxes for me.

Feel: Edging towards stout territory in terms of mouthfeel but none the worse for that. Coffee and chocolate up front, roasted malts in the middle and the cocoa flavours make a return in aftertaste with a lingering alcoholic burn to go with it. Really rather special.

Overall: This is my second Founders beer - the first, Rubaeus, was rather disappointing but they've hit a home run with this one. Nice mixture of flavours, heavenly smell and surprisingly easy drinking for something with quite a heavy mouthfeel. Stouts and porters are my 'preferred' styles, and I could easily find myself coming back to this one. Dark, Rich and Sexy? You betcha ...

Appearance: Opaque, almost black but not quite. 3/4 inch, thick, light brown head.
Nose: Roasted malt - biscuity, with some sweetness at the end
Mouthfeel: quite pleasant; nice body, balanced by a generous amount of carbonated crispness
Taste: initial roasted bite followed by malty sweetness and finishing off with just a hint of alcohol and cocoa bitterness.
Overall: this one is solid

12-oz bottle into porter/stout glass

A - 2 fingers dark tan foam over a body of pitch black, nice lacing

S - chocolate, roast malts, bread, smoke

T - chocolate, dark bread, burnt toast, coffee, earthy hops, brown sugar, smoke; complex and well-balanced

M - silky smooth medium body, moderate carbonation

O - "Dark, rich & sexy." This is an excellent porter.

look: 4.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Really dark, dark tan head, less than 1 finger, slight lacing

Smell: Roasted Malts are in the forefront

Taste: A perfect balance between the Chocolate and Roasted Malts, earthy hops are there, but not overpowering, this beer is all about balance

Mouthfeel: Very smooth, only enough carbonation, perfect for the style.

Overall: One of the best Porters out there, a must try, give one to a friend who isn't sure about Porters, they will be presently surprised.

Can Founders make a bad beer?
This is a top of the line porter.
Beautiful color and rich head that entices a drink.
The firs taste is a tease that asks for another.
Very rich and full of aroma with sweet after taste.
Similar but lighter than Founders Imperial Stout which is world class.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter of a finger of caramel-colored head that immediately dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed a few wispy clouds of foam.

Aroma: Very aromatic, with lots of rich, earthy, bready, roasted malt aromas up front, imparting notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, freshly ground coffee beans, dark molasses, dark chocolate, brown sugar, a touch of smoke, and a touch of floral hops aromas.

Taste: Delicious! Lots of earthy, roasted malt flavors up front, like toasted dark bread, coffee, dark molasses, a touch of smoke and tobacco. I also get notes of brown sugar-like sweetness, a touch of licorice, and a touch of hops at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium/medium-chewy and very smooth, as there is very little carbonation. With and ABV of 6.5%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is an absolutely outstanding porter! Highly recommended!

Grabbed it in a mix n match. Wow it is good.
A:Black. Foamy head retains beautiful color.
S:Coffee, caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, lightly noticeable hop.
T:All of the above. Malt and hops very nicely balanced.
F: Thick and creamy with a considerable amount of carbonation.
O: Definately world class. Wish I bought more than 1.

Appearance: Poured jet black with a thick one finger head. Receded to a bubbly film that left some nice lacing.
Smell: Coffee and chocolate notes were very prominent, with some roasty malt flavors in the background
Taste: Big coffee flavor, with a bit of a smoky flavor as well as dark roasted malt flavors.
Mouthfeel: medium to heavy bodied, pretty creamy, nice carbonation feel as well.
Overall: I'm not the biggest Porter fan, as many seem to be almost thin watered down versions of a stout, but this beer has none of those drawbacks - simply a great beer, wish Founders had regular distribution in CO.

Pours absolutely pitch black with a pillow dark khaki head with strong retention. Very little light or color shines through even in direct light. Smell is fairly mild actually, but lots of roasty malts, chocolate. Faint hazelnut. Taste is pretty much everything you'd ever want out of a porter; toasted malt, dark chocolate, bitter coffee, and brown sugar. Feel is pretty much perfect for a porter: rich, smooth and full with moderate carbonation, but not to full that it is difficult to drink. Overall, great porter, one of the best of the style.

DATE TASTED: January 18, 2015... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... OCCASION: AFV watching with the fam... APPEARANCE: jet black body; thick, creamy brown head that laces attractively; impressive screen of head is left behind... AROMA: some fragrant hops suggest a somewhat sophisticated premium lager; however, doughy malts make clear the beer's style... PALATE: whoa--high IBUs make for quite a blunt force impact at the teeth; a medium-balanced beer with a bold finish suggests more than 6.5% ABV...TASTE: the label suggests dark and rich--sweet and sour is perhaps may be a better hashtag; some whiskey or scotch...OVERALL: an intense porter, one that cannot be taken lightly; a mouthful of hop and malts, for sure...

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Dark coffee color with light creamy head dissolving rapidly to light lace. Distinct aroma of coffee and burnt sugar. Taste profile is coffee with molasses, fairly sweet. Good carbonation with slight lingering burnt toast.

Excellent porter pours a dark malty color into a mason jar. ( thats all the glasses they had left)
Nice flavor of roasted malts. Head didn't last long maybe it was the glass. And to top off this great beer it was on special for 2.95 a bottle.

Love Founders Beer!

Bottle Pour:
A - Pours opaque black, with a nice two finger milk chocolate colored head. Head thins out but lingers throughout drink.
S - Dark chocolate and roast coffee notes come forth.
T - Sweet chocolate and malty. Coffee and a slight bitterness on the back end. Nicely balanced between malt and hop character.
F - Nice bit of carbonation, smooth, creamy, medium bodied porter
O - Pretty solid porter. Makes great for the cold weather nights

Appearance - 4/5
Pours lushious chocolate-brown head, about 1 finger. Dissipates down to almost no head within a minute or so. Color is extremely dark, possibly black. When I hold up to bright light, can see some large particles floating around in the beer.

Smell - 3.9/5
Chocolate, hops, maybe some hints of coffee and/or other roasty flavors. Some sweet malts as well.

Taste - 3.5/5
Smoky, hoppy. Fairly sweet. I don't really feel like I can detect any of the chocolate or coffee in the taste. It seems dominated by the smokiness. Maybe a little bit of roastiness. Overall, the taste is more hoppy than I like my porters/stouts.

Mouthfeel - 3.7/5
High amount of medium intensity carbonation, which lasts throughout the sip, which is nice. Medium bodied. Crisp.

Overall - 3.6/5
Not a bad porter I just felt it was dominated by the smokiness and the hoppiness, and there wasn't much else that my palate detected. I would have like to see the cholocolate/roasty flavors come out more, and balance down the smokiness and the hoppiness.

Bottle pour. Dark brown to black with a tan head. Plenty of chocolate, coffee and roasted notes. The cocoa wafts in on the nose and dominates. Smooth and drinkable with enough of a hop factor to even out the sweeter, dessert inflected elements. A classic, whether enjoyed on tap or from the bottle this is a top class porter.

Another memorable Founders experience! An opaque, dark brown body with lingering tan head. Smells clean with caramel sweetness. Taste is somewhere between toasty malts and caramel, but this porter is well-hopped too. As it warms, roasted notes really come through. Mouthfeel is a pleasant, creamy carbonation with slight alcohol warmth. Overall, a roasted malt concoction perfect for a winter night. Definitely recommend.

Opaque black pours with thin tan head. Rich aromas of chocolate and roast are strong and inviting. The palate is malty and strong with slightly sweet chocolate notes. Hopped for balance, but not hoppy per se. This is about as good as porter gets.

So this is what a porter should taste like. Now I get it. Always preferred the stouts, but this version is amazingly drinkable. Best I've had of this style.

Served in a snifter from a 12 ounce glass.

Excellent head, two fingers thick, khaki in color, fluffy, bulky. Opaque, pitch black liquid with a few carbonation bubbles visible. 5

Dark chocolate, coffee and caramel all present themselves on the nose. Sweet creaminess suggests a milk stout. 4.5

Not much variation from nose to palate but none is needed. Rich dark chocolate, sweet and creamy caramel and a roasted finish that suggests coffee. Subtle hops give a bit of earthiness and pine. 4.25

Exceptionally nice to drink with it's full body, light carbonation and touch of hops and a roasted dry finish that shows no signs of alcohol. Light bitterness lingers on the finish as well. 4.25

So damn good. I love this.

Look: Black like a stout, almost imperial, with a couple fingers of medium-dark tan head that settles to some bubbles. Yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
Smell: Deep roasty notes, almost burnt dark roast coffee
Taste: The deep roasty flavors suggested by the nose introduce the palate with just enough sweetness to avoid too much of the anticipated bitterness. There is a bit of dark chocolate and a hint of the coffee in the nose. An herbal hop finish rounds things out with a nicely balanced touch of bitterness and a medium-long finish.
Feel: medium body, medium carbonation though smooth mouthfeel

Overall: I remember liking this a lot when I first tried it 6 months ago but in retrospect after trying many more porters and stouts, the Founders Porter stands out as a truly exemplary example of the style. In particular it is so robust in flavor that it is easy to see how it could be called a stout. In comparison to the sweeter floral-toned Anchor porter and the smooth and relatively light-flavored but superbly balanced Deschutes Black Butte Porter, this one is pure unadulterated roasted malt with big coffee and chocolate hints and a solid dose of herbal hops. It's so big on flavor that it's hard to imagine having more than one. Like the Dirty Bastard, this is a great value from Founders, as it drinks better than a lot of higher-priced brews and smacks of quality ingredients and production.

Halcyondays is the one responsible for giving me my first taste of Founders Porter! Thanks! On to the beer:

The beer is nearly ink black and has a sturdy enough head with solid doses of lace. it smells like toasted coconut and dark cocoa, two things which are pleasant together. In its taste, the beer has a dimension of nuttiness not found in the aroma. Semi-sweet throughout with coconut and nutty notes kicking around. That's enough to make Founder Porter a pleasure to drink,

Classic porter, especially as representing the brash, bold end of the porter spectrum. Tons of roasted barley, bordering on burnt toast at times, but with some nice coffee notes throw in there too. Great feel as well, rich, mildly viscous. This is a brew to put hair on your chest, so don't come in expecting a nice soft, sweet porter. In the middle of a cold winter's night, though, this is where you want to be.

Poured into tumbler out of 12oz. Bottle.
A: black as a moonless night. 1/4" caramel colored head quickly dissipates to leave nice lacing for a porter.
S: roasted malt and hops, w/ a caramel tinge.
T: follows the nose with notes of dark roast coffee and a slight bitter acridness on the swallow. Alcohol is COMPLETELY hidden!
F: initially thick but transitions to a lighter clean aftertaste I can only attribute to the masterful application of the hops...wonderful!
O: A top notch porter second to Eddy Fitz ONLY, IMO. More "Stouty" as well, but that's fine 'cause I LOVE the Stouts too!!!
