A: Black with a tan head. Looks creamy!

S: Cocoa and coffee with some nuttiness.

T: Roasted chocolate, cocoa, toasted bread, caramel, and malt. Nice taste, but honestly I don't see what the hype is about. It is a very tasty beer, but there are an abundance of porters of just the same quality or better.

M: Medium to full. Velvety with a bubbly feel to it. Nice.

O: A good brew, but as said above: not anything super special. An awesome beer regardless!

Shocked that I've never reviewed this with as many cases as I've poured over the year! Pours deep and dark, with nice khaki head. A nice roasty nose has me imagining cashews and toffee with hints of figgy goodness. The flavor is subtler smooth cola body faded into a bitter cocoa finish. You could drink this all night.

Look: Pours with large, mocha head, fine small bubbles with some bigger ones in the middle. Good, steady, slow, creamy retention with sticky lacing. Nice, fat layer stays on top. Surprisingly some carbonation visible. Dark, dark with brown hue. Very nice, especially the retention.

Smell: Dark, milk chocolate mix, roast and light coffee. Hint of caramel and some noble freshness. Fat, rich on the nose receptors. There is one note i can't really put my finger on, like a bit too oily (olive) burned bread crust you put on salad, in soups and shit like that.

Taste: Smell roughly translates. Roasted, very solid middle malt medium sweetness. Dark and milk chocolate and very light caramel. Good roast bitterness goes into coffee with a hint of hops and sweetness - a nice touch at the end.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, full body. Very nice. Carbonation noticeable but just the right amount. One of the biggest traits of this beer.

Overall: Sexy. Yea, why not. Mouthfeel is exceptional, the dark malt character is well developed and rich enough and that hint of fresh sweetness makes it a superb brew.

"The Porter that drinks like a Stout."
That should be the marketing slogan for this beer.

Bottled 11/17/13

A - Impenetrable darkness, with a faint head. Compared against Sierra Nevada Porter, this was thick and viscous (SN looked like weak Midwestern coffee or southern iced tea in comparison). Probably the darkest, blackest porter I've examined.

S - Strong roasted barley smell, maybe a dollop of dark chocolate.

T - A near-perfect balance of multiple malts and then malt/hop. Outstanding roasty malt goodness with hops seeming to act like an "unsweetened" agent against a slight dark chocolate suggestion. As if some really, really expensive euro dark unsweetened chocolate accidently fell into the kettle. This 6.5% ABV beer could probably hold up if ABV was jacked up a couple of percentages.

M - Creamy perfection, a near velvet wash throughout the mouth. thick and luscious, like you get from a quality stout. Even moreso than many stouts out there (hmmm...I should compare this with SN Stout!).

O - Benchmark for its style. Period. This is the 3rd time I've had this beer over the past few years, and this has held up to my impressions the other times I've been fortunate to drink it. Lives up to its expectations. If there is a better porter on this continent, it sure ain't anyplace I've ever shopped. Seek this one out.
