Looks the part tho the head fades quickly. Aromas are muted, but the taste is better. This sample highlighted roasts more than choc or coffee, and the roasts are bitter , almost burnt. Mouthfeel a little watery for ABV.

Well made beer obviously tho I am not sure if, given the fact that it is highly hopped, whether storage may be an issue. Little hop bitterness to this palate.

Poured bottle dated 10/4/13? into New Belguim globe.

A-Pours very dark black/brown with a small tan head. Head dissipate relativity quicky leaving spotty lacing.

S-Nose is dominated by chocolate and coffee but also has notes of vanilla and caramel.

T-Taste is great with sweet chocolate and roasted malts with a very balanced level of bitterness.

M-Mouthfeel is medium with soft carbonation and a great balanced finish very excellent.

O-Another great beer Founders. A must do porter!

Pours almost black with a thin head which dissipates quickly. A very inviting smell of dark cocoa and espresso. Followed by a very similar taste which also includes hints of malts. The flavours linger quite nicely. Feels like a perfect balance of silky smooth and creamy.

Quickly becoming one of my favourite porters.

Pours a jet black with minimal Khaki head. Smells of smoked fish, raisins, a hint of chocolate with some lovely espresso notes. The taste is of sweetened molasses and rich chocolate and prunes. Medium heavy mouthfeel with just a touch of carbonation makes it go down nice and easy.

This is a really easy drinking porter that was perfect for the winter ht that was upon me.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice creamy beige head that dies down moderately and leaves some spotty lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasted malts, dark chocolate, some coffee/espresso and some molasses.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sweet roasted malts, rich chocolate, bitter coffee/espresso and molasses.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/med carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with great flavors and aromas. Great porter.

Stouts and porters look amazing to me. The richness of the brew is so evident in the appearance, even in the most pedestrian examples of the type. The Founder's version was beautifully opaque with the tiny-bubbled head forming at around a millimeter or two. Great lacing almost all the way to the bottom.

It smelled of nearly burnt chocolate and slightly of coffee and prunes or raisins. The aroma was only slightly surpassed by the taste: chocolate, light wood (oak?) and dried cherries. The finish was dry and only slightly hoppy; roasted malt is prevalent up front and at the end and lingers for just the right amount of time.

The mouthfeel was perfect. Silky and lush. I wanted to hold it my mouth like the Chinese Brother who could swallow the sea. Is this a stout or porter? Now that I've tried several of both, I find the ABV on porters to be generally lower. One thing is for sure, Founder's Porter has the balls--serious mouthfeel, opacity, richness--of many of the stouts I've tried.

Going to get it again and again...

A. Dark, almost opaque, thin mocha colored head

S. Delightful, sweet light roasted coffee, dark chocolate

T. Taste is slightly bitter coco, coffee, very nice balance between the two, into roasted earthy tones

M. It is smooth & creamy, medium mouth coat, fairly dry finish, nice grain aftertaste

O. Between this one & black butte porter, I can't choose, but both my favorite porter, must try!

From notes.

A - Nice black pour with one finger of light brown head. Decent carbonation. Frilm retention and spotty lace.

S - Nice aroma right away. Chocolate and roast interplay well. Nice dark malt. Not too roasty but more smooth and, i hate to use this term, luscious.

T - Chocolate, mild roast that falls off in the finish. Again a really nice sweetness with chocolate and roast playing together properly. No artificial cola sweetness present. Quite good.

M - Very smooth, mild carbnoation, medium body. Not too bitter.

O/D - Very solid porter. Tasty and easy to drink with a good combo of properly nailed down flavours. Quite enjoyable.

poured into the bottle into a Turbinator.

A: Black. Brooding. some carbonation. Leads to 1.5 finger head down to a 1-2 mm disk. Nice lacing.

S: some bacon, smoky notes. Choco-malt. Smoked mild fish. Phenolics. This is definitely a smoky porter end of beer. This is definitely not Class of 88 deschutes/GLBC levels of smoked putridness. Subtle levels.

T: Bacon, smoked fish and the nose exactly and has that bitter smoked meat and porter character. Smooth. It's definitely on the verge of Rauchbier but smoother.

M: Creamy as all hell. Not as dry as I would expect, some creaminess offsets it. puckery smoke at ultimate finish. Out-breath is rough smoke and bitter campfire. It's robust!

O: I like milder porters but this brings the bacon so to speak. This stuff is definitely interesting and certainly world class.

Apperance: Dark beer with a light brown head.
Aroma: Rich toasted barely and coffee smell with molasses.
Flavor: Rich smooth coffee and molasses first layer, accented with a complex blend of spices. This brew is  hoppy thought out. It is a bold full bodied beer, with good carbonation.
Overall: This is a good Porter with its complex blend of spices. With an IBU of 45, the hoppiness of this Porter is quite pounced. This beer is more full bodied than most Porters.

(4.0) A: Pours black with a relatively thin head that quickly forms a brownish ring. Patchy lacing down the glass with short lived retention.

(4.25) S: Cocoa, dark coffee, vanilla, nice fruity qualities, and a steady caramel backbone. Very good contrast between the roasted malt and the bold hoppier-fruity elements.

(4.5) T: Similar to aroma with roasted malt and hoppier (citrus fruit-like) tastes in unison. Vanilla, caramel, and a faint smoke are all detectable. The bitterness is very well balanced and an appropriate (and noticeable) dryness lingers in the finish.

(4.5) M: Medium-full bodied with a moderate carbonation. Perfectly creamy and slick. Outstanding.

(4.25) D: This is one of the best porters I’ve had to date and could easily drink plenty of this stuff frequently. The mouthfeel is tremendous with a creamy and thick body.

Dated 11/17/13. Today is 1/5/14. Poured into a pint glass.

Black with a chocolate brown 2+ finger head. I saw some other reviews that didn't have the head or lace this one does. The initial foamy head was rich and thick. A nice layer left all the way through the bottle. The lacing sticks to the sides nicely.

Sweet smell of milk chocolate hits the nose first. A little roast in the middle. Slight hop aroma last. Smells delicious.

Taste of bitter hops and malt. There is a subtle chocolate flavor. Quite tasty.

A strong medium mouthfeel with nice effervescence that coats the whole mouth and dances on the tongue.

I drinkable, full on porter. Verging on a Stout. I like this very much. Founders hit another one.

A: Pours pitch black, you can't stop staring into it, it's like looking into a black hole which is very appealing to me, left a small head after a heavy pour, the head looked like fluffed chocolate milk, leaves a minimal amount of lacing on the glass, this beer presents itself very well

S: I'm a bit congested so the smell seems slightly faint so I am basing this on what I can smell, the initial smell I get is booze, not expecting this considering the low ABV, but then I am greeted with anise, some chocolate, both milk and dark, and a very slight hint of caramel, then finally the beer overall gives off a creamy smell to it, very nice combination of smell here, only downside to it is the boozy smell is a bit over powering

T: Initial flavor I get is an anise, hop, and booze flavor combination which gives it a strong flavor with some bitterness upfront, but then some of the sweet milk chocolate comes in and calms the initial punch of flavor that you get, then finishes with a creamy and slightly caramel taste which is really nice, solid flavor profile to it overall, I just feel that something is missing to it, like coffee or a little more sweetness would really support this beer in my opinion

M: Usually porters are too thick and creamy for me and it makes it hard for me to drink them, but this has a very good balance between the two, not too thick and not too creamy, it is very smooth as well, the booze does not affect the ability to drink this beer which is fantastic

O: I give it a 4.5, it needs some minor tweaks to make it just that much better, but what is really shocking me, is how much the booziness to this beer actually compliments it, the booziness seems to balance the beer, didn't expect a whole lot from this brew and it surpassed what I expected from it, first brew from founders and I need to get my hands on more of their brews

330ml bottle served in snifter glass.

A: Pours a deep brown color forming a small beige to brown head. Low retention and only few small spotty lacings left in the glass. A thin layer remains for long time on the top

S: Chocolate, roasted malts and oak. Quite biscuity, it reminds Oreo biscuits. Some earthy yeasts and some notes of flowery hops

T: Slight sweet upfront. Strong notes of dark chocolate, chocolate malts, brown sugar and wood. Reminds Oreo biscuits in taste too :). Nice roast bitterness in the end. Nice bittersweet balance

M: Medium, creamy and very smooth body. Medium carbonation. Biscuity and roasted aftertaste

O: Excellent drinkability. Perfect Porter. My 8th Founders. Always excellent quality beer

Picked up a single in late September from the Downtown Wine & Gourmet while visiting Harrisonburg VA for $1.79. bottled i believe on 06/24/13 though it was not a clean bottle date.

Beer poured black with a nice brown head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is roasted malts and cocoa.

Taste is chocolate, roasted malts with a nice amount of hopping to balance this to near perfection. Finish has a nice dry hopping.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth.

Overall this is a very tasty brew. Again would love to try this when it is fresh. Definitely a world class porter!

This was a great porter. Founders doesn't disappoint with this one. Nice head and lace on the glass, deep black color, looks great. The nose and taste mimic each other well, burnt espresso beans and chocolate, with some nice hop character as well. The maltiness is more dominant than the hops but they do their work to give some cleanliness to the middle character. A little fruity and bready towards the end, just really good all around. Thick body, not too strong on the carbonation. Delicious.

From the 12 oz bottle to a snifter.

A: deep dark brown/black with a thin one finger root beer colored head. The head dissipates quickly leaving little in the way of lacing or cap.

S: coffee, espresso, roast malts

T: coffee, roasted malts, some cocoa as well.

M: medium to full feel, good carbonation and smooth.

O: I have to say that I really enjoyed this beer. It is easy to drink and very flavorful. I would put it right up there with Breakfast Stout as one of my favorites from Founders.

12 Ounce bottle served very cold in pint beer glass

A) Black paint. No color passes through. Short puffy beige helmet dissolves quickly to leave a lacy cover

S) Black licorice, mild hop spice, burnt bread, coriander

T) Burnt coffee, pure dark chocolate, raisons and cooked dark fruit.

M) Consistency of root beer. Ample carbonation, sticky, full bodied

O) A very good example of the classic English porter

Founders Porter
Founders Brewing Company, MI
---from bottle to stemmed porter/stout glass---

Pours a dark mahogany brown but sits in the glass pitch black. Good tan head settles to a thin cap with good lacing.

Chocolate birthday cake. Caramel and licorice. Iced mocha. Slight grassy hop.

Sweet caramel malts, roasted coffee. Mocha. Finishes with bitter dark chocolate. Hops play an integral role in the background of this beer, though you may not notice right away.

Silky smooth. Perfect carbonation level. A little sticky from all the sweet. Dark chocolate lingers…

Very creamy/silky. This is the first Porter I have agreed with. Not overly burnt. Very well balanced. Gets better as it warms up – contemplating putting this baby in the microwave… kidding… kinda…

Solid black in color, capped with a one-finger khaki head. Good retention and lace formation. Cocoa is the primary component of the aroma along with some toasted grain. Some citric American hop aroma on the back end.

Predominantly dry with a mocha-like flavor. Mild bitterness that picks up a bit toward the finish. Mouthfeel is very good, bordering on silky, and it complements the flavor profile exceedingly well. Robust and tasty with no alcohol presence on the palate.

Founders has a very nice porter here, though that's not surprising given the overall quality of their lineup. Count this among the benchmarks for the style.

Beautiful black beer with just a hint of light making it through. One finger dark brown head from a turbulent pour; surprisingly good retention, fading to a thin remnant, and minimal lacing.

Aroma is dry cocoa behind black-but-not-burnt coffee.

Strong black coffee flavor, but it's mostly on the backend, mingling with some extremely dark cacao. Filling out the overall experience is a creamy milkiness, not unlike an oatmeal stout. Lovely bite to this porter. As it warms, it gains a smoky aspect, and some green hops start to come through.

Medium-full mouthfeel; not quite chewy. Lively with a bit of sting, but very smooth.

A very straight, to-the-point porter without any bells and whistles. You know what? It doesn't need them. It stands on its own quite well.

Pours a deep, black color, with brownish-tan head, not as creamy as I'd like it, but a fine looking beer. Smell is nice toasted malt, some chocolate and a tad of booziness that I could do without, but I'm being pretty picky here. The taste is fantastic; lots of malt, lots of chocolate, a bit of hops... I'd say the most notable aspect is the perfect amount of chocolate. Mouthfeel is great, glad it's not more carbonated and has some body to it.
Overall, it's just what you want in a porter. Minor details could be improved on, but it's one of the best!

Espresso darkness. Tan head that will disappear.

Aroma very roasted coffee, malts, hint of a smoke

Taste is full, roasted, not too sweet, nice balance, a little more bitter and fizzy than I expected. Long lingering coffee/hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel a little tacky but easily sipped. A smoky/pipe feel to the aftertaste. Super balanced.

Solid brew, agree w/ others about an almost obacco flavor balanced w/ the coffee/malt notes. Very pleasant. Love this.
