Poured into a snifter

A: Black with a tan one finger head that dissipates pretty quickly, leaving bubbles in its wake. Curtainy lacing.

S: Chocolate, anise, coffee and vanilla. Divine.

T: Smooth and robust. Velvety. Semi-sweet chocolate. Like drinking a latte. Comes on like an Imperial Russian Stout. Like the label says, the taste is sexy.

M: Medium to heavy with creamy carbonation.

O: A really outstanding porter. Wish I had picked up more in Birmingham. Bet it goes well with chocolate chip cookies. Highly recommended.

served in a snifter

Pours black with a half finger of off-white head that dissipates quickly, leaving nothing but a rim of tiny bubbles after a few moments. The main thing I get from the nose is rich sweet caramel malt, with coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and a faint herbal hop presence. A delicious-smelling porter. The taste also has big sweet caramel malt notes but the coffee comes out a lot more and combines with it. It's moderately to highly carbonated to make every flavor note pop, and it finishes dry with a lingering but subtle bitterness from the hops. An exquisite beer!

Appearance: Poured 1/4 finger head that dissipated almost immediately. Dark brown/black color with no lacing. Once settled, no foam remained whatsoever.

Smell: Sweet roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, toffee, slight licorice and coffee. Floral hops round it out.

Taste: Nice balance. Sweet malts, both dark and milk chocolate with coffee up front. Citrus hops pop out from underneath mid palette and carry over into the finish, which ends with a nicely contrasting sweet, piney and coffee bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, medium body with very little carbonation. Sort of flat. Dry, slightly oily finish. Nice lingering coffee and faint piney bitterness.

Overall: I enjoyed this beer. I loved how the hops played along with the sweet, smokey flavors of the malts. It was some of my favorite characteristics of a Porter with a nice touch of my favorite characteristics of an IPA.

Chocolate black with rocky sepia head that fades to film.
Chocolate, espresso and smoke on the nose with some wood, earth and licorice - deep.
Good coffee, dark cocoa, a bit of black berry and brown sugar then some subtle green herbal hops.
Truffle finish and dry linger.
Medium, way smooth, lots of cling.

I was a sceptic but there's a lot going on here: nose rewards repeated visits, lots of choc + a real roundness to the coffee notes, and silky body. Goes down reeeal easy; no hint of 6.5%. Roast is not prominent and body is not full, so this is rightly called a porter. Only knock would be that the hops don't really show up - sweetness never gets out of control but I'd never guess 45 IBUs and no hint of aroma; Crystal is a mild hop apparently - though this is reasonably fresh.

Right up there with Anchor and Edmund Fitz.
