My last Founders bottle stashed away from my trip to Chicago, somehow... Purchased in late April, but I feel that this was bottled even earlier. I cannot tell, however, as the bottling date is smudged at this point. Poured out of a 12oz bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Pours a dark, nearly black color (with a bit of brown on the edges) with a modest finger of an off-khaki head. Recedes rather quickly, and probably due to the beer's age at this point. Not too many bubbles show, although they are present overall. No lacing or residue left behind with each sip, either. This is still a well presented beer, especially as far as porters go, but I'd really like to see it in its prime sometime.

Contains a solid aroma of roasted malty notes, balanced bitterness, and slight sweet flavor underneath. At first there are obvious notes of coffee and dark chocolate, as well as little bit of vanilla, nutmeg, and pepper. Then, there's an undeniably pleasant grassy aroma that keeps things interesting and cuts the initial malty bitterness and sweetness from the booze from ever becoming cloying. It opens up quite well as it warms, bringing out even more notes of coffee and nuttiness.

The flavor is also quite good, and while I wouldn't age it in the manner that I did, it still is very worthwhile at this point. Notes of brewed espresso beans combined with dark chocolate that provide a roasted sharp bitterness, and then there's a nutty earthiness that skids into the various spices I picked up earlier, ranging from vanilla to brown sugar. The hops linger at the finish, providing subtle notes of pine and citrus. The extra ABV definitely gives this porter its own unique mark in the plethora of versions available in the Midwest. Founders, as always, displays the creamy, bready qualities found in all of their maltier offerings, and while it's a little bit less syrupy than their stouts, it drinks lighter and is actually an easier drinking experience overall, if just a little less explosive in flavor than their stouts (not saying that this is a BAD thing - it's just an observation).

Great stuff from Founders once again. I hope to have this fresher or on tap one of these days and see more of the fresher malty and hoppy notes open up overall. I could definitely have this porter more than often if I could find a way to stock up more on it.

12 oz bottle was poured into pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or bubbles seen coming up through the glass.

Smell: roasted coffee, smoke, mocha, molasses, and more burnt aroma.

Taste: There is a balance of above mentioned flavors as the beer warmed up. A bit smoky and burnt, but it doesn't last long.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, bitter, full bodied, smoky, and medium carbonation.

Overall: As good as it gets. Pretty solid porter and happy to have finally had the chance to try it.

12oz bottle into a pint glass
no bottling dates

A: Pours an opaque black with browning on the edges when held to light and 1/2 fingers width of mocha colored head. Head dissipates down quickly and leaves effectively zero lacing.

S: Semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malt, char, subtle dark fruits. Lots of char, but pretty mild aroma overall.

T: Follows the nose, but better. Char, roasted malt, oak, heavy cream, chocolate, subtle hop bitterness. Excellent.

M/D: Fairly smooth, carbonation on the higher end for the style, drinkability is great. The only downside is it leaves this weird filmy feeling coating my mouth, and its very distracting.

O: Overall, aroma is a bit lacking but a really tasty beer. I dont drink standard porters all that often, but if I were to drink one this would be near the top of my list of choices.

The look of the beer is pitch black with a tan head. Reminds me of a espresso even with the smell. As I take a drink the first think that hits my tongue is the taste of coffee and malt with a smooth finish. Not the strongest or most notable porter I've ever had but it has a great taste and a good finish. Just like a good coffee.
