A porter with a nice off white head and a dark deep color. The smell is roasted and chocolate. The taste is roasted malt and caramel, hints of coffee, and a nice hop character. Rich, medium to heavy body that does not feel that full. Smooth and creamy. This is porter above others, lots of character and goes great with BBQ.

Review #200, figured I'd make it an old favorite.

Beer pours a dark brown/almost black with a fluffy brown head. Smell is chocolate, roasted malts and also a bit of caramel malt in there as well. Flavor follows the nose, but takes it up a notch. This beer has an incredible balance of flavors - the roast malts don't take over the beer like they do in a lot of porters, instead it's got a little bit of sweetness to it and an incredible dark chocolate cookie-ish flavor (it reminds me of the chocolate crunchies on a Carvel ice cream cake). The mouthfeel of this beer, at least on tap, is what really makes this beer. It's very full-bodied and robust, unlike most porters which I find too thin. It's also got high carbonation which keeps it from being too heavy despite the larger feel. Overall, this is one of the best porters out there, and maybe THE best porter not made by Hill Farmstead (Everett and Twilight of the Idolts reign supreme). It's a hell of a lot easier to get than the HF beers, so it's my go-to porter. An excellent beer.

I will say that this beer is still great, but maybe not quite as amazing out of the bottle as it is on tap or on cask. The mouthfeel especially tends to lose a little something.

12 oz bottle into chalice. bottled on 07/12/12.

A: the darkest of dark brown pours. coffee hued head is bubbly. retention isnt great, nor the lacing.

S: i get a lot of chocolate on the nose. a lot. milk and dark. a little bit of vanilla. not much else, wouldnt hate for a bit more diversity.

T: dry roasted malt starts the body off in a good way. the body is flavorful but not over-the-top. the body slightly reminds me of motor oil. finish is dry and roasted goodness. bitter dark chocolate linger with plenty of coffee flavor as well.

M: moderate carbonation on a medium body.

D: this stuff is delicious. flavorful, not too heavy or too light. a really enjoyable and easy to find american porter.

Had this a few times but never got around to reviewing it. Bottled 6/27/12 Poured into a pint glass.

A: About one finger of mocha colored head after a very vigorous pour, which dissipated into some patch lace on top. Not much lacing on the glass itself. The beer is almost completely opaque with the slightest tint of red on the edges. Even tried to shine a flashlight through it and couldn't see anything.

S: Malt dominated with caramel and black malts coming though big time. Roastiness with some earthy tones in there and a hint of chocolate too.

T: All grain on this one. Nice deep dark flavors here. The roastiness in the nose gets swallowed up right away with caramel and earthy flavors. The earthyness in the middle does a nice job of balancing out the bitterness of the dark malt. Is there also a bit of licorice flavor in there? The after taste in this is just delightful! Roasted malt and dark chocolate linger on the palate to make you hesitate taking that next drink.

M: Medium to medium heavy mouthfeel. Very silky smooth.

O: A great example of a porter. Once again my home state comes out with a winner. If you like porters this is one to check out for sure. Great beer.
