Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Black. That's all there is. Mild carbonation, and no light gets through, there's no lacing, and there's also just a very small head that quickly dissipates. Of course, if you do an aggressive pour, you'll get a really nice tan head. I recommend doing so.

Smell: Espresso. Roast. Maltiness. Mmm. It's rather light though.

Taste: It smells a bit better than it tastes... the initial taste is mostly just roastiness, but after it sits on your tongue for a bit, I get some dark coffee bitterness, with a hint of dark chocolate in there as well. There's the warming of alcohol at the finish as well.

Mouthfeel: It's definitely rich, but not nearly as creamy as I was expecting it to be. Sort of surprising, but not a huge deal.

Overall, it's an incredibly big, robust beer. The thing about it is, I feel sort of goofy drinking this in August. This to me screams winter, in front of a warm fire place, or maybe even as a substitute on a cool morning for warm coffee. This isn't my type of beer to casually drink -- I tend to prefer lighter beers for every day drinking -- but there's no denying its quality. It smells phenomenal, and its taste is one that I feel can surely grow on me as I get older. I don't feel it's as fantastic as the rating suggests, but it's undoubtedly a well made beer. I'm very interested to see just how my taste buds change when I get another sixer in a couple years.

Now this is a beer that knows how to get your attention. It pours a deep opaque black with little to no head and not much lacing. The smell is pretty powerful and I think I detected a hint of alcohol (which I can't always smell). Mouthfeel is full and complex. Not so much carbonation, but a malty hoppy goodness that finishes perfectly with a coffee and chocolatey backend. Good stuff, but not for the AAL timid crowd.

Founders scores again!!!!

Bottle poured into one of my New Belgium snifters.

Bottled on date indicates that this was bottled on the 8th day of some month in 2012, but the month printed on the bottle is smudged and illegible.

A: Pours a "lighter shade of black", with a big thick rich tan head on top, 2 fingers worth.

S: Roasty, mild notes of coffee, and a surprising amount of chocolate in the nose.

T: Big, bold, spicy notes up front. I'm not sure if the spice I'm picking up on is a hint of pepper, a touch of alcohol, or something else. Notes of chocolate arrive next, and they're presence isn't negligible. A moderate amount of hop bitterness and grapefruit make their presence known on the back end, to balance this beer out and give it another dimension of character.

M: Great carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Dry finish. This is playing all the right notes.

D/O: This brew smoothed out as I worked through the pint. And as it warmed, the chocolate became more and more pronounced. Definitely repeatable. I would definitely consider getting this by the keg.

This is a beautiful opaque black, espresso foam head.

Even with my weak sense of smell I pick up deeep dark chocolate with a little espresso bitterness. somewhere between roasty and burnt? Like a good tea. is that weird to say?

slightly more bitter than I would expect, but built in, taking second fiddle to the malts I picked up on the nose. Sweet smoothe chocolate, with a wave of caramel and coffee. The finish is a dry bakers chocolate, sugar and some grassy hops.

This is one of my favourite beers. I am very glad I picked up the pack on my travels, and look forward to getting it again.
