Near black pour, light cocao lacing. Been dying to try this one for some time. Scent of milk chocolate, coffee, and maybe some brown sugar. Mouthfeel is thick and well balanced. Lush chocolate tones, black tea flavors, unfolding into a dark roast coffee taste that progresssively gets more bitter. Tastes just ever so slightly light for a porter though, reminiscent of Bell's Porter that, while both exceptional porters - just slightly lacking. Both are similar Porters though, with Bell's being more smooth and Founder's having somewhat more complex, deeper, and more developed flavors. Excellent porter overall.

Had this one poured from the bottle into a goblet.
Appearance: Black with a thin half-finger of head, nice lacing on the glass as it went down. Close inspection reveals lots of tiny bubbles fizzing bottom to top.
Smell: Malt, yeast, burnt coffee and chocolate. A bit of a tingle on the nose.
Taste: Very heavy, more like a stout to me. The burnt coffee & chocolate first, then malt and hops. The finish lingers reminding me of bitter medicine.
Mouthfeel: Like I said, this was heavier than I anticipated.
Overall: I was looking forward to cracking this one open. Disappointing. Porter isn't my favorite style, but I really enjoy Orginal Flag and crave the occasional Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter. This one, not so much. Out of respect to the brothers and my fellow BAs I'll give this one another shot but I'll have my porter lovin' buddy standing by for the handoff.

A - A vigorous pour revealed only a 1/8th finger head of dark tan head. This slowly melted away. Body is black and needs about 4mm or less to see light through. Trace of head sticks around for a while and lacing is perfect.

S - Just a great aroma for a porter. Spot on to what you would expect. Chocolate and licorice to go with some prunes and slight nutty aroma. I can't pinpoint the exact smell though.

T - Very dark malty/nutty flavors. Definitely some coffee and chocolate. Only slight vanilla. Very roasty, like a roasted espresso bean.

M - Maybe a bit overcarbonated for a porter, but still nice. Just gives it a more refreshing feel to it. Body is medium but lighter than the look.

O - A very good beer at a good price. Wish I lived somewhere this was distributed. Probably couldn't drink more than one though.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with some very light amounts of visible carbonation at the edges of the glass. The beer has a finger tall dark mocha head that reduces to a uniform thick film covering the entire surface of the beer. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts with much lighter hints of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits.

T: This is a very well balanced beer - there is enough malt sweetness to accomodate the bitterness. Flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits. There is a light lingering bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and slightly dry in the finish.

O: Very easy to drink and very enjoyable. I really like the mouthfeel and if it was just a little lower in ABV, this would be a real session beer. I would definitely get this one again.

Aroma: Big and bold dark malts. Roasty, mildly burnt black malt, coffee, chocolate, roasted barley. The moderate sweetness offset by the burnt roasty black malt and mild bitter hops. Some bready grains.

Appearance: Appears quite viscous during the pour. Head is very dark, even for a porter. Medium dark brown head. Head is moderate height, good retention, impressive lacing. The brew is very dark brown in color.

Taste: Deliscious. Roasty, lightly burnt black malt. Espresso and sweet coffee. The sweet malts are nicely offset by the coffee bitterness. Crisp bitter hops. Semi-sweet chocolate. Roasted barley, a good dose of grains.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Feels thick and creamy, but finishes dry from the hops and coffee bitterness.

Overall: Delightful. All aspects are impressive. Savory and bold, yet never harsh. Sweet and bitter, but never too much of either. A true classic. Might be the best porter out there.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 04/20/12.

A: Pours a deep black with a thick 1 finger khaki head. Leaves some lace as it dissipates over a few minutes. Can catch a little light around the edges.

S: Wow this hits you with a great coffee and chocolate. Has a dark fruit alcohol aroma as well. Good roasted malts. Actually a little hop at the end too.

T: Starts with a roasted coffee and chocolate and balances out with more hops than anticipated. A little bittering at the end but still leaves a great malt quality in the aftertaste.

M: Very nice and full bodied. Doesn't come off watery at all. On the low end in carbonation but that goes well.

Overall a porter that puts most others to shame. Has the best mouthfeel I have seen in a porter.

Big fan of this one. At beer geeks in Highland Indiana.
Lined up in a flight of stouts/porters.

A: A dark brown. Decent tan head.

S: Mocha. More milk chocolate than coffee.

T: Lots of dark chocolate and roasted malts and dark roast coffee. Smooth as silk.

M,: Very solid feel. I like them thick and creamy. This is mid level and smooth.

Overall: terrific beer. Ordered a pint after the flight. Beat out the others!
