Had this a few times but never got around to reviewing it. Bottled 6/27/12 Poured into a pint glass.

A: About one finger of mocha colored head after a very vigorous pour, which dissipated into some patch lace on top. Not much lacing on the glass itself. The beer is almost completely opaque with the slightest tint of red on the edges. Even tried to shine a flashlight through it and couldn't see anything.

S: Malt dominated with caramel and black malts coming though big time. Roastiness with some earthy tones in there and a hint of chocolate too.

T: All grain on this one. Nice deep dark flavors here. The roastiness in the nose gets swallowed up right away with caramel and earthy flavors. The earthyness in the middle does a nice job of balancing out the bitterness of the dark malt. Is there also a bit of licorice flavor in there? The after taste in this is just delightful! Roasted malt and dark chocolate linger on the palate to make you hesitate taking that next drink.

M: Medium to medium heavy mouthfeel. Very silky smooth.

O: A great example of a porter. Once again my home state comes out with a winner. If you like porters this is one to check out for sure. Great beer.

Poured into a pint glass.

A - Jet black in color with a dense khaki head that eventually becomes a thin layer of fizz. Okay lacing.

S - Big notes of chocolate and a little coffee.

T - Maybe not as big as the smell but a great tasting chocolate, coffee, and malts. On the roasty-darker side.

M - Thicker bodied than a normal porter, which I'm digging a lot. Very smooth all around.

O - The first porter to me that gives Edmund Fitzgerald a run for its money, and I definitely like it more than black butte. I don't know if it has quite has big a chocolate taste, but it certainly holds up well in all other categories. In general though, another great offering from Founders.

Pours deep black with medium brown head that persists. Initial aroma is fragrant flowery but this quickly disappears after tasting to become intense chocolate, roasted coffee and malt. Full bodied mouthfeel. Taste is well balanced with a strong, yet not overwhelming, coffee flavor. The hops were not evident even though the IBU stated on label implies a high level of 45.

A - Body is dark dark brown. Some chestnut highlights glow around the edges when I hold it up to the light. Two fingers of light tan head forms. Great retention. Minimal lacing.

S - Lots of dark chocolate, some sharper acidic coffee notes. Some fruit-like esters as well.

T - Sweet and slightly sharp up front. Subtle fruits and milk chocolate in the middle. Finish has straightforward malty sweetness mixed with a touch of bitter burnt grain flavor. Prominent aftertaste of unsweetened cocoa. Overall, a truly solid flavor profile. Robust, but not too sweet or burnt-tasting.

M - Medium body. Carbonation is a bit over-the-top. Finish is just a touch sweet and syrupy.
