Appearance: Very dark brown, nearly pitch black in color even when held to the light. ½ an inch of creamy tan-ish head quickly dies down. Looking thick and creamy, and some nice suds upon swishing the glass around a bit.

Smell: Lots of sweet chocolate and coffee on the nose, with some creamy hazelnut. Smells almost like a dessert.

Taste: The bittersweetness of the chocolate/coffee hits you twice, once upon first taste and then again on the swallow. The aftertaste lingers on for a while, which is not a bad thing. A good creaminess mellows things out throughout. Very nice balance.

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation present, with a sizeable mouthfeel. This beer definitely has some mass to it, but goes down smooth.

Overall: A great porter from a brewery I am became more a fan of this past year. Can’t really say anything negative about this one. A great brew for riding out hurricane Sandy!

12oz bottle poured into a straight sided pint glass. Bottled 6/20/12.

A: Gave me nearly a finger of mocha brown head. Very deep brown body...might actually be black, but I’ve always thought of it as brown. Tough call.

S: Lots of coffee, some light chocolate, and wonderful smoky aromas.

T: A balance of earthy hops, caramel and chocolate notes. The roastiness of the malt is perfect for this style.

M: Pretty much spot on for the style. Carb adds some welcome creaminess that enhances the entire experience.

O: To me, the signature of this brew is its smokiness. It invokes the umami sensation that I get from the Maillard reaction in barbecue or pan-seared foods. So nice.

A solid brown-black color with a reasonable but thin tan cover that generates respectable lacing. The aroma comes on pretty strong with prune charcoal and milk chocolate nuances but the charcoal dominates. The flavor follows suit with a brown bread charcoal and some muted dark fruits. Light herbal hop presence beautifully blended into a medium plus body brew that offers a silky smooth feel and modest carbonation. Luxurious stuff with a subtle dark fruit edge. A defining porter from one of the best.

Appearance- Pours very well leaving a good solid head. Very black body.

Smell- Has a very nice coffee aroma.

Taste- Has a dark chocolate taste with a very nice coffee bean after taste.

Mouthfeel- Very low carbonation, with a medium body.

Overall- Has a nice chocolate taste, but not overwhelming. Goes down very smooth defiantly a great session beer. Founder's did a very fantastic job on this one.
