Bottle, approx. 55 F, poured into unchilled stange glass.

A: Dark but not the opaquest porter. A little dainty lacing on the edges; almost no head.

S: Quite the hit of roasted malt. Also hints of coffee and, I could swear, a note of cinnamon.

[After a few sips, I bump the smell from 4.0 to 4.5, because I found it to be an extremely rewarding experience as my nose went further into the half-empty glass.]

T: Maybe I'm crazy, but there's the cinnamon again. And recollections of chocolate-covered espresso beans. Upon swallowing and inhaling through the nose, I definitely get a butter-toffee like finish. (In spite of my analogies, it is not sweet at all.)

This is robust enough to please stout lovers, but I wouldn't call it a stout-lover's stout. It's a stout for the gourmand.

M: Again, good for the gourmands: amuses you and then leaves you alone. Clean. Polite.

D: If you're looking for a stout that'll really kick your ass, this isn't it. This dances on the palate, rather than stomp on it. It's interesting w/o being overwhelming.

A: Deep, dark black. Medium brown, fluffy head that builds and fades quickly leaving behind no lace or retention.

S: Big nose. Dark chocolate, booze, dark fruit, molasses, smoke, roasted malt.

T: Big, roasty malt with chocolate and espresso notes. Great body, meaning it isn't watered down like some Porters. Has the flavors of a Stout with the body of a Porter. Chocolate dominates. Surprisingly, some hops in the finish.

M: Super smooth, rich, and roasty. Great flavors. A bit cloying at the end but nothing bad.

O: One of the more flavorful and enjoyable Porters I've had in a long time. Delicious stuff. But what else would you expect from Founders?

The bottle reads, “Dark, rich and sexy.” That is immediate bonus points in my book. Sexy on a bottle makes everything

Appearance: Pours thick, dark, and has no head on it. It’s still and thick. Darker and heavier than other porters I’ve encountered. Some dark brown and reds line the edges when held to direct light.

Smell: Full of roasted coffee and chocolate malts with a touch of smokiness under everything. There’s some sweetness as well. Caramel with a touch of something darker and heavier underneath (maybe creeping toward molasses). A deeper inhale brings a faint alcohol touch in the back. Nice roasted compliment with a lingering cocoa notes. Chocolaty.

Taste: Deep roasted notes come through strong. A burnt coffee taste lingers on the tongue. Seriously burnt. The smokiness plays on top of the burnt coffee. Some dark cocoa notes are there as well. Brownie batter sweetness at times. Loaded with coffee and the chocolate spectrum. Warming brings out a stronger roasted characteristic and enhances the smokiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body pushing toward heavy. Nice and smooth with a well-balanced carbonation. Creamy at times, especially as it warms.

Overall: This is an enjoyable porter, or as enjoyable as I can find a porter. It’s got some solid roasty and burnt notes coupled with some dark cocoa and minor fruits. Founders scores another +1 in the larger scheme of things.

Near black pour, light cocao lacing. Been dying to try this one for some time. Scent of milk chocolate, coffee, and maybe some brown sugar. Mouthfeel is thick and well balanced. Lush chocolate tones, black tea flavors, unfolding into a dark roast coffee taste that progresssively gets more bitter. Tastes just ever so slightly light for a porter though, reminiscent of Bell's Porter that, while both exceptional porters - just slightly lacking. Both are similar Porters though, with Bell's being more smooth and Founder's having somewhat more complex, deeper, and more developed flavors. Excellent porter overall.

Had this one poured from the bottle into a goblet.
Appearance: Black with a thin half-finger of head, nice lacing on the glass as it went down. Close inspection reveals lots of tiny bubbles fizzing bottom to top.
Smell: Malt, yeast, burnt coffee and chocolate. A bit of a tingle on the nose.
Taste: Very heavy, more like a stout to me. The burnt coffee & chocolate first, then malt and hops. The finish lingers reminding me of bitter medicine.
Mouthfeel: Like I said, this was heavier than I anticipated.
Overall: I was looking forward to cracking this one open. Disappointing. Porter isn't my favorite style, but I really enjoy Orginal Flag and crave the occasional Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter. This one, not so much. Out of respect to the brothers and my fellow BAs I'll give this one another shot but I'll have my porter lovin' buddy standing by for the handoff.

A - A vigorous pour revealed only a 1/8th finger head of dark tan head. This slowly melted away. Body is black and needs about 4mm or less to see light through. Trace of head sticks around for a while and lacing is perfect.

S - Just a great aroma for a porter. Spot on to what you would expect. Chocolate and licorice to go with some prunes and slight nutty aroma. I can't pinpoint the exact smell though.

T - Very dark malty/nutty flavors. Definitely some coffee and chocolate. Only slight vanilla. Very roasty, like a roasted espresso bean.

M - Maybe a bit overcarbonated for a porter, but still nice. Just gives it a more refreshing feel to it. Body is medium but lighter than the look.

O - A very good beer at a good price. Wish I lived somewhere this was distributed. Probably couldn't drink more than one though.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with some very light amounts of visible carbonation at the edges of the glass. The beer has a finger tall dark mocha head that reduces to a uniform thick film covering the entire surface of the beer. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts with much lighter hints of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits.

T: This is a very well balanced beer - there is enough malt sweetness to accomodate the bitterness. Flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits. There is a light lingering bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and slightly dry in the finish.

O: Very easy to drink and very enjoyable. I really like the mouthfeel and if it was just a little lower in ABV, this would be a real session beer. I would definitely get this one again.
