The small thin head on this beer disappears quickly, leaving it looking almost like a glass of coke; black, opaque, bubbly.

Moderately aromatic; not a super strong smell here but nicely roasty with hints of chocolate. Right on target.

I like the flavor better than the aroma of this beer; it has an excellent balance of roast malt, hops, coffee and to a lesser extent, chocolate. Medium bitterness.

Excellent mouthfeel that mixes effervescent carbonation that stimulates the tongue with a pleasing creaminess.

Very effectively done. The aroma isn't exactly exceptional, just good, while the taste is very nice, but on the bitter side of the style. This bitterness may slightly dominate the other flavors. It's not as vivid as I had hoped, lacks huge chocolate or coffee notes. Drinks very well and the mouthfeel is trult excellent.

As good an example of a porter as I have had recently but still not the pinnacle for me, I suppose.

This is a very dark, black brew. It sports a full, tan-colored head and leaves a thin lace. Roasted malt aroma...almost smokey and burnt with some chocolate-milk scents in the background. Not much of a hop scent. Solid porter smell. The taste is reminiscent of robust coffee. Some sweetness, but mostly a very roasted, bitter/burnt malt and grain flavor. Full in body...almost creamy at times. I really enjoyed this porter. Well done.

A- Pours an almost black color. Really beautiful deep color. Head is half a finger and leaves little lacing.
S- Very roasted malt notes on the nose. Really getting a lot of coffee on the nose. There is a bit of a bitter chocolate aroma and I'm getting just a touch of dark fruit.
T- It's a bit sweeter on the tongue than I would have guessed from the aroma. More milk chocolate than bitter chocolate but I'm getting that coffee flavor in there. A light hop note is particularly noticable in the finish.
M- Smooth, just slightly silky on the tongue. Carbonation is low, but I like it that way here. Just a touch fuller and I would give it the full 5 here.
O- A delicious porter and at only 6.5% it really is getting the flavors in per abv. Definite recomendation to any fans of the style.

Poured into a Coca-Cola Pint Glass

Appearance-Opaque black with a very very thin brown head that leaves a thin film on top. Little lacing.

Smell-Had to wait for beer to warm a bit, then got a lot of coffee, not in your face though. Some chocolate as well.

Was expecting more coffee in the taste and only got some right up front then went to a milky sweet, fucking awesome chocolate. Then I take another sip and get a ton of coffee with a light and sweet bitter finish. Some Roast and Smoke in there as well which just brings out the flavors in every sip.

Mouthfeel-Medium bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Very easy to drink.

Overall-Another good Porter. I've been drinking alot of good ones lately. Very easy to drink before, during, or after a meal. Had a 2nd one with a stew and went perfectly.

Pours dark, rich, and...somewhat sexy I suppose. Small tan head disappears a little quickly and forms a ring, leaves spotty lacing. Smell is mostly chocolate malts, some coffee. Taste is bitter coffee, dark chocolate, a little smoke. I'm also picking up some hop flavors such as citrus. Mouthfeel is very good, nice and velvety, perfect for a porter. Another solid offering from Founders, great for the price, I will be finishing this 6-pack pretty quickly I'm sure. Glad to see this available for purchase in this area finally.

Consumed on 9/7/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer appears black with a one finger light brown head and good retention.

The nose is roasted malt with some dark chocolate and a touch of coffee. Some earthy hop character is evident.

The flavor is bitter and roasted malt. Black coffee notes are strong and some dark chocolate is again present. The finish is dry and roasted with lingering bitterness. The flavor is pretty great.

The beer is full bodied with low medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is bit thin and watery. Aside from that this is a good Porter.

12 oz bottle poured into a mug

A: pours a very dark brown with an inch dark tan head

S: Aroma is roasted malt with dark chocolate and prune in the background. also a bit of vanilla/sweetness to the nose

T:First thing i notice is a nice bitterness followed by dark chocolate and prune at the back of the tongue. A nice malty sweetness balances the bitter chocolate

M: more carbonation than i was expecting although i kind of like that. medium smooth body. the finish is a bit slick and the beer coats the tongue

I recently picked this up, but it says bottled on "06/08." Not sure if it's three years old or from June 8th. Oh well.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Surprisingly minimal dark tan head but moderate lacing. Pitch black.

Aroma is roasted malts, toffee, cocoa, coffee, and a hint of grapefruit hops... which is impressive if this is indeed three years old.

Flavor is roasted malts and coffee...but not as bitter and dark-roasted as the coffee flavor you get in many stouts and porters. Some hint of bitterness from the hops and dark chocolate, but overall very well balanced. Slight touch of caramel sweetness.

Medium-heavy bodied, fairly creamy but also moderately chewy with good carbonation.

Overall, definitely a solid and well above-average porter. Definitely worth picking up now that the weather's dropping.

This beer pours pitch black almost like thin motor oil in a good way with quarter inch of tan head with plenty of lacing.

Smells of roasted malts slightly smokey.

Taste is similar to the nose malty roast smokey and sweet with minor hop bitterness.

This beer feels thick with very little carbonation, but it is very smooth.

Overall I really like this porter, it was part of a sample case, and would get this beer again.

Apperance: Dark beer with a light brown head.
Aroma: Rich toasted barely and coffee smell with molasses.
Flavor: Rich smooth coffee and molasses first layer, accented with a complex blend of spices. This brew is  hoppy thought out. It is a bold full bodied beer, with good carbonation.
Overall: This is a good Porter with its complex blend of spices. With an IBU of 45, the hoppiness of this Porter is quite pounced. This beer is more full bodied than most Porters.

A - pours like oil out of the bottle with a ½ finger, mocha head - dark, rich, and sexy, per the bottle

S - very sweet, milk chocolate - very sweet with a little bit of roasted malt

T - The taste pretty much follows the nose. It is very sweet and milk chocolately at first, which is then followed by a subtle burnt malt. Pretty good.

M - kind of watery, but good carbonation. Smooth and goes down nicely.

D - I really enjoyed this porter. Not saying that this is a bad-tasting porter in any but I tend to like a little bit more roastedness in my porters and stouts, though. I will definitely purchase this again...

I'm back at school for my senior year, yet the most exciting part about being back on the east coast is the new selection of beer I get to try. After being (what I would say) well versed in the realm of west coast beer, I get to learn all over again over here.

12 oz bottle opened on 9/1/11 and poured into a pint glass. Served at 55 degrees. Bottle dated 6/8/11.

A- Black as night. Really surprised me how dark it was. One inch mocha head leaving thick lacing down the glass. Looks really nice.

S- I could smell this as soon as I poured it. Mostly smells of roasted chocolate, coffee, and sweet malts.

T- Follows the nose, but there's a lot more roasted flavor coming out. Nice bitter after taste of roasted malts and coffee.

M- Maybe a little much on the carbonation as it prickles my tongue slightly. I do prefer a smoother beer when it gets darker, but perhaps that's just the kind of stout lover I am (yes, I understand this isn't a stout). Nice and creamy, definitely satisfying beer.

O- The porter was my very first introduction to the craft beer scene. That being said, this is a great beer and I prefer it to the Anchor Porter (which was the said first beer). Great beer. Glad I bought a sixer.

This poured out as a deep brown color with a fast fading head on top. The head comes and goes just leaving a thin ring around the glass. The smell of the beer has a chocolatey roasted aroma with a very minimal hop aromas on the nose. The taste of the beer had a really nice deep and long lasting roasted flavor. There is a blend of chocolate in there too and even a hint of what I think tastes like roasted marshmallow. The mouthfeel is a moderate carbonation, but also has a creamy smooth body too. Overall this is really good, it's boarderline stout in my opinion but either way it's a great beer.

Pours dark and black with a thick brown foam. Good retention and lacing

Aroma is chocolatey, and coffee like. Not much else going for it.

Taste starts out with a chocolate profile, bitter from it as well. It develops into a toasty coffee flavor after that, and goes down with a coffee/chocolate fusion.

Mouthfeel is full bodied and creamy

Drinkability is average for a porter, but the ABV is low. It is full bodied though, so that won't help. But then again, porters aren't meant to be drinkable beers.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Hotel glass
From: Whole Foods in Tempe, Ariz.
Price: $2.59
Purchased: May 15, 2014
Consumed: May 16, 2014
Misc.: Bottled April 25, 2014

Poured an almost pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of bubbly, tan head. Good layered, foamy, spiderweb lacing along the sides of the glass. Average retention.

Smelled dark chocolate fudge, smoky woodfire, dark roasted nuts, crayon, caramel, toffee, chocolate and some dark bitter coffee malts.

Tasted better than the smell, but still pretty similar. Got dark chocolate, fudge, smoky fire, crayon, toffee, rich, smoky roasted nuts, caramel and smooth coffee notes.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Was great all the way down.

A very good porter. This one grew on me as it went down. I might of underrated this a bit.

Founders Porter is a delicious American porter that is perfect for drinking on a cold winter's night. It's not tooo alcoholic, so have a couple. Lovely!

A: Black colour and a 3 mm head that fades pretty fast. 3.5

S: Dark, burnt malt and strong coffee aroma. 4.5

T: Dark, sweet malt with hints of chocolate and some bitterness in the finish. The finish tasted a tiny bit metallic to me, for some reason. Still delicious! 4

M: Small bubbles that stick to the edge of the tongue. 3.5

O: 4

A 12 oz bottle

A: Deep black, with a thin head that quickly dissipates. The tiniest amount of lacing remains atop the beer. Very nice color.

S: Chocolate roasted malts with hints of coffee. It's really a wonderful smell. Tiny hints of dark, sweet fruits also.

T: Roasted malts upfront, with nice, light hints of coffee and chocolate. I'm picking up hints of dark fruits as well. Overall, the flavor is good, though a touch light. Light bitterness from the hops complements the roasted malt quite well.

M: Fairly thin, but this isn't one of the RIS that I've been drinking recently. Moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Definitely a winner. I love Founders dearly and theirs may be my favorite porter, though I tend to lean toward higher ABV stouts.

Pours a syrupy dark dark brown, looks quite thick for a porter. Just a smidge of light-coffee-colored head (really, where's the head?).

Smell is a great concoction of dark roasted malts, with espresso, dark rum, and some strong dark fruits (cherries probably the best fit). A bit of smokiness there, too.

Taste... quite good. Tastes mostly like it smells, except that the smoky flavor is more pronounced, and there's a tangy bitterness in the finish, like a bunch of citrus hops trying to fight their way through. Decently complex, though the finish throws the balance off a bit.

Mouthfeel is, as expected, heavy and syrupy. This stuff IS thick for a porter. The carbonation is much more present than I expected based on the lack of head, which lightens it up.

I definitely enjoyed this beer. It's a very solid porter, though I wouldn't say it's one of the best. It's quite tasty, but lacking the balance and subtle flavors that the better ones have.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

a: Pitch black. Half finger high brown head dissipated quickly to thin surface foam.

s: Mild dark malt.

t: Mild dark malt, coffee, chocolate and smoky finish.

m: Light to moderate. Smooth with a lingering chocolate/coffee smokiness and hop bite.

o: Exceptionally drinkable porter without being watery or feeling cheap. Had as a dessert but should go well with beef and other red meat.

Appearance- Pours completely black with a one inch off white head that leaves moderate lacing.

Smell- Strong but not overpowering smell of dark chocolate and Columbian coffee. Some sweetness in the nose.

Taste-Very similar to the nose, dark chocolate and bitter coffee with a bit of dark fruits as it warms. Good amount of bitterness without leaving an excessive dry feeling. Very little hop presence.

Mouthfeel- Very creamy with good carbonation for the style. Not excessively dry.

Overall- Pretty good porter. Not a lot of complex flavors but a good example of the style.

Bottle poured into nonic. Finger of tan head settles to a cap on top of near black opaque liquid. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, mocha, burnt toast. Taste is all kinds of roasty/burnt malt bitterness, a little cocoa sweetness, a touch of late hoppy bitterness and maybe some veggies and dark fruit sweetness. On the low end of full bodied, slick and creamy texture, low carbonation, abrupt bitter finish.

A= pours a dark jet black somewhat thick looking with a thin tan head that falls so fast you can barely get a glimpse with no lacing.
S= tons of coffee in it with a lot of toasted malts and thin traces of dark chocolate.
T= nice coffee flavor with a lot of toasted malt and some smokyness. Really has a slightly burn toast kind of taste.
M= kinda prickly. Not too impressed.
D= pretty good. Reminds me of the breakfast stout but not as amazing. Still a very good beer.

to be honest i am pretty disappointed by most porters and wasn't expecting much from this one and boy was i wrong. pours pitch black with brownish-cola edges and a dark khaki head. the nose is rich and deep - dark chocolates, dark almost burnt toast, coffee, milk chocolate raisins and the slight burnt/smoky notes that are common to many porters but are much more intense here. the taste follows - lots of sweet and bittersweet chocolate, campfire smoke, dark toasted almonds - a little booze heat at the end. the mouthfeel is great - rich and smooth, chewy but not cloying, and for such a sweet beer finishes dry. all in all i really enjoyed this and might even get it again, which is rare for me and porters. i would recommend.

Appearance- Thick black pour with opaque body and tan head. Good sticky dark lace.

Smell- Rich roasty aromas of coffee and chocolate- little hop character- slight aroma of overripe fruit.

Taste- Rich malt, sweet with chocolate and roasted coffee, more ripe fruit, fig, hop-bitter finish.

Mouthfeel- Thick and syrupy, almost chewy.

Drinkability- Reminds me of a subdued breakfast stout, which helps make for a highly drinkable porter.
