Pours black in the pint glass,a little brownish head remains, the chocolate notes hit ya up front but they are not overpowering the hop rounds this one out but leaves just enough dark maltiness, this is one fine porter, easy drinker, and a real deal for the price

Pours a voluptuous looking black with a light chocolate colored head, about 1 finger, recedes to a ring and cap. Splotchy lacing throughout. Smell is coffee, malts, and chocolate all the way, blended nicely. Taste is chocolate and malt up front with a big lingering chocolaty finish. Goes very nicely with the silky smooth mouthfeel, very delicious. Great porter, one of the best I've had.

A very sexy beer. Pours pitch black with a nice two finger dark tan head (perfect color for a porter) that is nice and creamy and leaves me very thick lacing behind. A ring is left after the head dies down, the retention being the only lost points on the appearance. Smells like a good candy to me. There is a very nice cocoa aspect that blends beautifully with a roast malt backbone in the aroma. Earthy hops weave their way into the scent to add a nice balance to the roast. The great strength of the aroma allows me to sniff this one for a very extended period of time. There is also a touch of vanilla which finishes off this great aroma. The taste is similar to the nose. Huge roasted malts are the dominant flavor for me along with some cocoa and smokiness. There are definitely a good amount of roasted malts in this recipe, chocolate malt specifically. I get a smoky flavor but this is probably from something like black patent type malt. The vanilla is lost in the taste for me and the hops take a bigger step forward. The flavor does not come together as well as the aroma but is still a good example of the Porter. Mouthfeel consists of a nice medium body with lower carbonation than many beers. I prefer this low carbonation with such a rich flavor. Earthy hops and roast malts stay on the tongue long after the beer is swallowed. No alcohol or warming in this ale at all. I might want this to be a tiny bit thicker to get the perfect rating. Drinkability is very nice, I could session the crap out of this and the price is not bad. I will buy this one to session if it continues to come to my area.

Pours dark, rich, and...somewhat sexy I suppose. Small tan head disappears a little quickly and forms a ring, leaves spotty lacing. Smell is mostly chocolate malts, some coffee. Taste is bitter coffee, dark chocolate, a little smoke. I'm also picking up some hop flavors such as citrus. Mouthfeel is very good, nice and velvety, perfect for a porter. Another solid offering from Founders, great for the price, I will be finishing this 6-pack pretty quickly I'm sure. Glad to see this available for purchase in this area finally.

A - Black.. with a tan head that disappears rather quickly.

Smell - Roast and chocolate notes none of the aromas out shine the other..

Taste - Awesome! The chocolate and roast aroma carries into the flavor of this beer. This beer is perfectly balance.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, yet border line viscous. Carbonation is not too heavy.

Drinkability - I can drink several pints of this beer easily..

Overall - This is one of the best porter's I've ever tasted. This is the last of my stash until I travel (or order) out of state for another beer haul.

Founders Porter has a black, opaque body with about a finger of brown head. The retention is ok, and a little bit of spotty lacing is left behind on my glass.

The aroma is a mix of cocoa powder, chocolate, roasted malt and a touch of molasses. Some grapefruit from the hops also peeks through. Overall this is a very good aroma for an American Porter.

The first thing I notice in Founders Porter are flavors of chocolate: cocoa powder, bakers chocolate. Next a touch of bitter, roasted malt along with just a hint of sourness come through in the front. In the middle there is just a hint of dark fruit -- black cherries. After that a moderately strong hoppy, grapefruit-flavored bitterness comes through.

The body is a touch thicker than the middle of the road, and it is a bit silky, both of which I like.

Overall this porter really impressed me, it is probably one of the best American Porters that I have come across.

God bless Founders. Poured into a pint glass. Bottled on 8/12/09. From notes.

A: One and half finger medium dark borwn head thats creamy with respectable retention and lacing. The body is very dark brown, not quite black, but completely opaque.

S: Heavy malts of molasses, caramel, grain, some roasted, some burnt. Light hops of pine with a bit of spruce and maybe a little citrus. The yeast is earthy and meaty and heavier than I expected. Slightly warm on the nose.

T: Additional flavors and/or aromas of smoke and wood and dark fruits. The earthy yeast adds a peaty flavor. This porter coats the mouth to produce a long, well-attenuated flavor duration that is mildly sweet and only moderately bitter.

M: Thick texture but not quite a full body mouthfeel. The carbonation is fizzy.

D: This brew has a well-deserved spot in the Founders mixed case. While good, it is outshined and has a lower drinkability, in my opinion, than the 2 of the 3 other offerings.

Pours thick and opaque black with a thin and creamy tan head. There is a light aroma of roasted malt but the boldness of the beer is in the drink. Smooth coffee flavors and a gentle hint of chocolate flow with a mildly thick and viscous brew. Low carbonation slows the drink even more and fades gracefully into a sweet malty finish. It ends smoothly and crisply.

Black with a small white head. A great looking beer.

Smells of chocolate, roasted malt, and mild hops.

Taste is fantastic. Silky smooth chocolate roast. Mild bitterness from hops. Amazing how the cocoa and roast make each sip such a rewarding experience.

Sexy, velvety mouthfeel.

So damn drinkable. This was incredible, I want a 1/6 bbl for the kegerator :)

Mocha head, half finger is gone in 30 seconds. Inky black. Under a bright light there is active carbonation with a fair bit of suspended particle. No head, little retention. Lots of sediment left behind.

The smell alone lives up to the description on the label of, "Dark, Rich & Sexy", with impressive waves of dark chocolate, sweet dark chocolate eclair, malted milk, tiramisu aromas ... lovely!

The taste is wonderfully rich with layers of coffee bean, vanilla, cocoa, dark and some bitter chocolate presented within a smooth velvety mouthfeel. Full body, nice texture, low astringency & nicely hopped feel. Aftertaste lingers ... delicious!

In a nation of fine Porters, this indeed has a rightful place. Founders is one of my favourite breweries, keep up the good work.

A: Coke black. Some head, very nice lace windows.

S: Coffee. Chocolate malt.

T: Follows nose, then add some hop bitterness. I'm not a big hophead, says 45 IBU's, but, they are hidden with a nice balance of the roasted malts.

M: Coats mouth with goodness! Fairly heavy beer.

D: I've been into Porters more lately, and this one kicks ass. The "D" on this is huge..as I judge drinkability as how fast I want another quaff, after I sit the glass down..This is FAST! It's almost addictive. Looks to be a staple in the fridge for now.

A: Pours so dark of a brown that it is essentially black, completely opaque; not a hint of light gets through. The head is dark cream and stays for a long time and leaves cream lacing on the glass. Best looking beer I ever poured so far.

S: Heavy on the chocolate even with my bad nose, some coffee and malt as well.

T: Chocolate and coffee come through strong, malty, and a little bitter from hops as well.

M: Smooth and well crafted, good carbonation level.

D: The one and only thing that I don't like about this beer is how heavy it sits in the stomach. It won't stop me from drinking it though and otherwise it is utterly amazing.

Pours a dark, oily brown with a creamy tan head. Nice lacing and retention.

Nose has roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, molasses, floral hops.

Taste has burnt malts, cocoa, espresso, molasses and bitter hops.

Medium body is nicely carbonated. Great porter from Founders.

A: Pours an opaque black color. A large tan head rises to two fingers. Good lace is left behind.
S: Roasted malt, coffee, cholocolate. Classes porter aroma. A slightly bitter finish. Some hops, but also a bitter bakers chocolate.
T: All the roasty, toasty malty porter flavors that I love. Coffee with a huge bakers chocolate flavor. Again finishes a little bitter. A mixture of what seems like late addition hops and the chocolate flavor.
M/D: a bigger, fuller body, almost sticky. Moderate carbonation and fairly viscous. This is something that always happens to be in my fridge.

This drinks bigger than what it really is. If that makes sense. A great porter that is a staple of mine.

Pours a mahogany hued ebony with 1 finger of rocky mocha colored head. Average head retention & good lacing

S: Coffee & dark chcolate, fades once warm

T: Pretty much follows the nose, very intense flavor up front along with some dryness. Charred wet grain & herbal hops blend in as well once this is warm. Finishes dry with intense coffee/charred grain flavors. A few years ago this wouldn't have impressed me as much, I am really starting to get into beers with coffee flavors more & more...

MF: Smooth, medium bodied & silky

This one drinks pretty darn easy, might have to hoard this one, not my favorite porter, but right up there!

Poured into Ommegang tall sniffer. Pours very dark/black, semi-thick and almost instant creamy, yet small tan head. Head is a little frothy and simmers to a small ring of tan on the surface.
Aroma is a little bitter at first with notes of dark/semi-sweet chocolate.
Flavor is very good. Soft and creamy, sweet and bitter...again notes of dark chocolate, maybe even coffee.
Not too thick, so easy to drink, and mouhtfeel is medium body. Founders just makes good beer!

Poured from chilled bottle into pint glass.

A: Deep mahogany - completely opaque with a 1/4 inch creamy chocolate head that dissipated quickly, leaving a tiny collar. Light lacing.

S: Lots of chocolate (blend of dark/semi-sweet), blended with rich dark roasted coffee, hints of vanilla and smoky charred wood, with a light touch of dark fruit sweetness (cherry, prune).

T: Very full, rich - much like the nose; dark chocolates and dark roasted coffee galore up front followed by a mild chocolately sweetness. Finishes with a mild bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit and dark chocolate. Quite tasty, though not terribly complex. Bitterness lessens and sweetened chocolate flavors shine through more as beer warms.

M: Rich and full but a little thin. Good carbonation.

D: Goes down so smoothly - could easily put 2 or 3 of these away. Delicious pairing with blueberry pie - fantastic dessert or sipper beer.

mouthfeel: rich, but could be creamier

drinkability: rich and heavy, but very tasty

A huge, balanced, stoutlike American Porter.

A: Opaque black with burgundy edges when held to a light.

S: Quite a nosefull... lots of deeply charred malt, coffee, prune, cocoa... much like a stout.

T: Matches the nose well with perfectly balanced sweet burnt malt and fruity hops.

M: Pretty much perfect... creamy, heavy, like a stout.

D: As drinkable as can be... glides down easy and sits like a meal.

Pour an opaque darkness with visible sediment at the end of the bottle and a two finger loose foamy dark brown head that's gone in a flash, leaving little Belgian lacing behind. The smell is a nice chalky NECCO chocolate and coffee aroma. Lightly carbonated, the mouth feel is full bodied with a tangy bitterness. Full flavored, the coffee bean character is moderately roasted. The texture is creamy smooth with a touch of lingering roasty bitterness. A really nice drinker, you'll want to sip and savor it. Many thanks Stigs!!

Dark porter brown body. Light cannot penetrate. Finger of thick, light brown head. Robust roasted malt aromas, light chocolate, and pine/citrus hop bitterness on the nose. A bit like a jacked-up SN porter might be like. Big roasted malt flavors up front. Deliciously appetizing roastiness gives way to smooth, sweet chocolate and woody, peaty flavors. Hop bitterness dominates the finish. Good balance. Medium-full body with a creamy feel.

A- Poured into a 16oz nucleated tumbler... a finger thick somewhat creamy brown head starts it off... disappearing a bit, but leaving a good 1/4 inch remaining on top of a black beer that leaves no light escape when held up

S- Not as much there as I expected... definately some chocolate and coffee smell there, nice but not overwelming

T- Has a nice toasted taste almost from start to finish with a hint of chocolate coffee flavor coming through in the swallow

M- Not chewy, but still a medium to heavy bodied beer... medium carbonation as well

D- Not one of my favorites. Drinkable, but many better options out there

A - Pours a nice black with a thin mocha head that dissipates quickly.

S - Roasted malt, unsweetened chocolate, vanilla, molasses, a hint of bourbon.

T - A bit of hop bitterness up front followed by tons of roasted and caramel malt. Some sweetness to it. More chocolate as well as some grapefruit pith from the hops. Some darker fruits in here as well. Raisins, plums, and a hint of figs.

M - Nice low carbonation, creamy, medium bodied.

D - Nice and drinkable. An excellent brew for this cold December Illinois afternoons.

Pours near black in color with a dark brown head. The head remained throughout most of consumption. The aroma consists of dark chocolate, coffee and hints of alcohol. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and pretty smooth. This is a rich robust porter. Drinking this makes it hard to distinguish between what's a stout and what classifies as a porter sometimes these days. The flavor is loaded with ample amounts of dark roasted malt. At times an espresso-like quality emerges in the taste also. Goes down amazingly well for a 6.5% ale. Perfect for the dark winter nights that are coming.

Pours a black color, maybe with a touch of dark, burnt brown coming through, Develops a 2 finger thick, light brown colored head that slowly dissipates to a thick creamy layer, that leaves a good amount of lace on the glass.

The aroma is quite chocolatey, not unlike a malted milk ball with some bready yeastiness. There is also a mild roasted, almost coffee-like note and even a little touch of vanilla.

The flavor is pretty intense, starting out with a dark chocolate punch and then giving way to some dark caramels and a nice creaminess towards the finish, which ends with a coffee-like bitterness.

This beer has a nice creamy texture with mild carbonation. it really does feel quite good on the tongue, so smooth and flavorful. What can I say, this has got to be one of my favorite porters. Definitely a lot of flavor packed into a fairly small package.
