Pours 2 fingers worth of a mocha head. Mostly black body, some mahagney around the edges. Good retention and lacing.

Sweet bready maltiness, toffee, light coffee and roast

Chocolate milk, coffee, light roast, toffee. A firm astringency come through, a dryness and twinge of mouth puckering tea bag like flavor.

Medium bodies, medium carbing. Fairly creamy that transitions into a dry astringency. I may not be describing this very good but this is my impression.

Overall this is good. Good look, smell and the base flavors are there and pleasant. It's this dry tea bag like astringency that detracts from the overall picture. I'd try this again, maybe it's a process issue.

A- Pours a pitch black color with 1 finger tan head that recedes into a small cap with minimal lacing after a minute or two.

S- Chocolate, coffee, green apple (odd?) and some cream

T- Starts out with an almost boozy character, with bits of caramel, chocolate, hints of dark fruits. The finish is mostly some deep caramel notes although dry.

M- Low carbonation. nice feel for a beer of this ABV

D- Overall, kind of a dissapointing offering. I expected quite a bit more from founders.

This a fairley pretty black (not quite a dark black), with good lacing for a 4oz taster. I very much enjoyed the chocolate foresmell/foretaste with a light vanilla/coffee bean taste. The hops are a little overpowering though. I would have expected a more balanced flavor, even with the prominent hop smells. Not a beer I would order after tasting, but decent none the less.

A: Pours a coffee brown, with a brownish, grayish ½ inch head. Watery, carbonated, lacing on the side of the glass on initial pour.

S: Roasted malt and coffee nose. Nose is not overwhelming, but fair.

M/T: Medium, syrupy body that slides down the tongue. Roasted malt hit, followed by a carbonated sting and coffee flavors. Finishes earthy and malty, that takes over the whole tongue. Fairly balanced.

D: With a very high APV and a thick malty aftertaste, this beer is not session able, however the alcohol base is barely noticeable. Solid drinker.

Appearance - 4/5
Pours lushious chocolate-brown head, about 1 finger. Dissipates down to almost no head within a minute or so. Color is extremely dark, possibly black. When I hold up to bright light, can see some large particles floating around in the beer.

Smell - 3.9/5
Chocolate, hops, maybe some hints of coffee and/or other roasty flavors. Some sweet malts as well.

Taste - 3.5/5
Smoky, hoppy. Fairly sweet. I don't really feel like I can detect any of the chocolate or coffee in the taste. It seems dominated by the smokiness. Maybe a little bit of roastiness. Overall, the taste is more hoppy than I like my porters/stouts.

Mouthfeel - 3.7/5
High amount of medium intensity carbonation, which lasts throughout the sip, which is nice. Medium bodied. Crisp.

Overall - 3.6/5
Not a bad porter I just felt it was dominated by the smokiness and the hoppiness, and there wasn't much else that my palate detected. I would have like to see the cholocolate/roasty flavors come out more, and balance down the smokiness and the hoppiness.

Served - Bottle poured into a Stein

Dark pour with a slight 1/8 inch head that tapered off 15 seconds after pouring. Just a small amount of head remains on side of glass as you drink.

Rich, molasses, malty, almondy scent.

Can taste the molasses, coffee, chocolate, and malt flavor very well, however the taste of carbonation makes it seem a little flat.

Rich presence in your mouth. A nice warm feeling as you swallow. Slight carbonation.

A little bit underwhelming taste after a great smell. Not as rich as I had figured it would be. The chocolate after taste is excellent, however mine did seem a little flat.

Served into my Tremens glass!

Appearance: The body of this porter is black as night. And, it devours any light that would even think about passing through the void. However, this beer has NO head. Even with a vigorous pour, only small, copper colored bubbles decided to join the party. Disappointing.

Nose: Malty, malty, and yep....malty! Typical chocolate malt notes mixed with some of the classic roasty notes are here in my nose! Though there is a nice twing of some hop brightness.

Taste: If it looks like a porter, and smells like a porter, and tastes like a porter...yes...by god its a porter! Again, the typical chocolate maltiness mixed with some good toasty and coffee notes. There is a nice amount of hopping, nobles or hallertau? Pretty tasty.

Mouth: First thing is a pretty bright carbonation. Coats the mouth nicely, but isn't terribly thick and uncomfortable.

Drink: Not a session due to the slightly higher abv, but still pretty drinkable.

Overall: A pretty typical porter in my opinion, I've had better, I've had worse. Cheers!

So Raul brought himself back a cornucopia of East Coast/Mid West goodies/shelf beers and Founders Porter it is gonna be on this one.

Blacker than my baby mama soul, and even a little tastier at that. I mean, Raul ain't tripping like that one time that he finally got to the center of the tootsie pop, but it's good enough. Raulsky done drank this damn thang at room texture to make sure that he got all of the textures, aromas and flavors - and it was par for the course.

A little lighter than Raul would have liked, but it's definitely a sinkable putt.

Pours a nice mocha-colored head. Color is stark black as you would expect from a porter of this statute. Smell is a bit hoppier than I would expect a porter. Still a very dark malt scent on it, which is encouraging.

First sip is very well-rounded, turning out to be one of the bigger porters that I've had. Taste is dark and has many of the coffee/chocolate bitter qualities that make porter such a robust beer style that it is.

Mouthfeel is powerful without being over-powering. Aftertaste settles the beer nicely and confirms the overall smoothness.

Another great from Founders, try it sometime!

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Black pour. Big tightly, beaded head with a lovely creamy foam atop. Clingy lace. Great aroma of a mixture of roast and hops with underlying cocoa and vanilla. Light, oily texture. Very creamy. Upfront a good mixture of chocolate malt and hops. Tasteful roastiness, and more slick malts follow. Finish is sweet, with roasty notes, then lingering hop, chocolate, and mocha notes. Little under mid glass this has lost a little body. Overall though, a great mixture of hop, chocolate, and mocha flavors. Loses some points as the sweet taste was not there to complement the sweet aroma I picked up. Nice spotty lace all over the empty glass. Tasty stuff.

This is a nice looking dark beer. It came with a very thin caramel head. Had a nice roasted malty smell. Could taste a hint of chocolate. No over powering taste, but was still pretty good.

A decent porter from a good brewery. This little porter has a deep brown to black body and a nice tan head that creates lace down most of the glass.

The nose is malty with a good portion of coffee to add interest. In the flavor we also get a few choclate notes that liven the overall experience. The feel is exceptional for a porter with more than a little body. The drinkability is good since the flavor and body are nicely matched.

From bottle, poured into my beer bug very dark, almost black. Very thin tan head. Pronounced coffee scent. Not at all unpleasant. Mine left no lacing.

Taste is similar to scent. Roasted coffee and roasted malts dominate the flavor. If that's what you are looking for, you'll find it here in abundance. Very smooth mouth feel. Actually felt thinner than it looked like it would be. Bitter aftertaste makes you thirsty for another drink.

This was not a bad porter by any means, but it wasn't necessarily what I was expecting .

Poured into Nonic Pint Glass

A: Pours very dark brown caramel/coffee color. Dark tan head with fine carbonation.

S: Strong malt coffee smell. Hints of roasted malt, slight smokiness.

T: Strong roasted malt flavor, somewhat smokey. Very close to a dark roast coffee. A slight sweet taste of vanilla to balance to the malt.

M: Medium Body. Good carbonation and smooth overall. Dryc finish from the roasted malt flavor.

D: Overall pretty good, a bit dry on the finish for my taste. Well balanced with the bitter malt and sweet undertones. But a solid porter.

A-Pours an oil slick black with a two finger, dark brown head. Leaves behind nice lacing.

S-Smells of sweet coffee and chocolate malt.

T-Roasty coffee upfront with chocolate malt. it finishes dry, bitter with a hint of alcohol.

M-Smooth and medium bodied with a dry slightly prickly mouthfeel. Not a lot of carbonation here, which isn't a bad thing.

D-Pretty easy drinking, solid porter. Not the best porter I've had but I could see picking this up in the future.

The darkest brown with a light brown head.

Coffee and roasted malt aroma.

Dark chocolate syrup is first to mind, little coffee note in there, too. The darker malts give off a charred taste. A very straight forward, hearty beer. I can't pick up the hops but there's a touch of sweetness on the finish.

Could well be a stout. A dirty kind of brew that's all the better for it.

Thanks to jwinship83 for the trade.

A - Solid black in color. Small fading brown head with nice even lacing on the glass.

S - Earthy oaked tones with a dry malt aroma.

T - Along with the smell, earth oaked characteristics with a slightly smokey/java dry finish.

M - Medium bodied, medium carbonation, not sticky on the palate.

D - Easy drinker, low ABV. Little to much on the oaky/java side of things for me.

12oz bottle into AVBC snifter.

A: Pours almost black with about a half-finger of dark brown head that quickly turned into a thick film that left a spotty sheet of lacing down the glass.
S: Light notes of coffee with a touch of baking chocolate. The smell isn’t overpowering, but what’s there is nice.
T: Follows the nose with soft notes of coffee and bitter dark chocolate. There are definite undertones of grassy hops, and they add a delicious layer to complexity of the flavor. The aftertaste is lightly bitter and has a touch of smoke.
M: Medium body with a bit of chewiness to the mouth. Carbonation is pretty bubbly but not really sharp.
O: Definitely an above average porter and an above average beer. This goes down easy and smooth. Thanks to the generous BA who sent this to me!

A- The appearance of this is a wonderful dark brown color with a bit of red. It poured into my glass with a one finger head.

S- A pleasing coffee aroma was present with a bit of cocoa.

T - It starts with a very pleasing taste of what an american porter should be, malts with both coffee and chocolate. It disappoints with no lesser notes and a weak finish.

M - Good, but not very smooth.

D - This is drinkable beer.

A pleasant porter overall.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Fridge temp, about 41 F. 1421339130127B is the bottle code. Purchased by a friend in Texas and shipped to Washington.

Pours black with a tiny head. Small amount of very fine, very slow carbonation. Smell is rich, chocolatey, slightly yeasty, some coffee. Mild, though. Maybe it'll open as it warms.

Taste is coffee, yeast, date-ish sweetness, smokey roast. Quite nice.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly grainy. Overall, quite tasty. Not sad I have most of a six pack left.

A- very dark, black, oily body but not much of a head builds up easily.

S- roasted barley all the way here. Smells like there may be a hint of fruit adding some complexity from an English ale strain. I wonder if they used an American or English strain here.

T- Definitely a big roasty presence. Pretty big sweet body behind it, bitter roasted finish.

M- Nice smooth body. The carbonation is a bit below medium, works well here. Fine texture to the bubbles.

D- Not a poorly crafted beer at all. But I do prefer a little more chocolate to my porters and less of a roasted bite.

A - Pours completely black with a thin mocha head. Small lacing is left.

S - Vanilla, medium coffee, light roasted malt, moderate dark chocolate.

T - Lot of coffee up front as is usual of a porter. Roasted malt in the middle along with sweet dark chocolate. Almost Stout-like in it's flavors. Finish is slightly bitter with a very small amount of vanilla coming through.

M - Medium bodied with light to medium carbonation.

O - Overall, I think a lot of porter taste the same, however this one had a bit more flavorwise than most and it didn't have heavy stinging carbonation. So in terms of a porter, this one is a winner.

The aroma on here...wow. Very rich, even for a porter. Full of espresso, bitter chocolate and all things malt. Just like sniffing a cold mocha.

Mouthfeel here is very creamy. Body is a thick mix of coffee and dark chocolates (but mostly coffee) in harmony with one another. This doesn't turn exceptionally bitter until the finish. There, the finish features a moderate hop bite and some bitter coffee to give a somewhat astringent ending to the swallow. The coffee certainly hangs around a while afterwards.

This is a very aggressive porter. I respect it for that. Drinkability will be harmed for that reason, at least for me. Those who want a thick, punch you in the face porter should turn to this one.

A: BLACK, couldn't get any light through this beer. Doesn't pour with much of a head and had a small amount of lacing.

S: Has a nice roasty coffee smell, big roasted malt. Also has a small bit of hops to the smell.

T: The taste isn't bad, just as it smells. A pretty coffee forward taste with small amount of hops as well.

M: Pretty smooth with a light carbonation, doesn't leave much on the tongue goes down smooth.

O: Pretty good beer, not a ton going on but what it has is good. Worth a try
