A: Jet Black, large mocha colored head, reduced quickly. Average lacing. This is the darkest porter I have seen.

S: Roasted caramel, dark chocolate, espresso malted milk balls.

T: Dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans. Great balanced bitterness at the end.

M: Average carbonation, again, the bitterness at the end is phenomenal. Great body.

D: Is this a porter or a stout? Best porter, and most balanced, i've ever had, PERIOD.

Stouts and porters look amazing to me. The richness of the brew is so evident in the appearance, even in the most pedestrian examples of the type. The Founder's version was beautifully opaque with the tiny-bubbled head forming at around a millimeter or two. Great lacing almost all the way to the bottom.

It smelled of nearly burnt chocolate and slightly of coffee and prunes or raisins. The aroma was only slightly surpassed by the taste: chocolate, light wood (oak?) and dried cherries. The finish was dry and only slightly hoppy; roasted malt is prevalent up front and at the end and lingers for just the right amount of time.

The mouthfeel was perfect. Silky and lush. I wanted to hold it my mouth like the Chinese Brother who could swallow the sea. Is this a stout or porter? Now that I've tried several of both, I find the ABV on porters to be generally lower. One thing is for sure, Founder's Porter has the balls--serious mouthfeel, opacity, richness--of many of the stouts I've tried.

Going to get it again and again...

A - Pours think and black. Or should I say dark, rich and sexy? Nice dark brown head. Beautiful.

S - That is so nice. Roasted malt and coffee and that unmistakable "porter" smell.

T - Very, very roasty with bitter coffee and a bit of sweet. Some mild hop to compliment it. The lingering taste is a great mix of the roasted and sweet malt.

M - So smooth. It may just be that RIS is my favorite style but this is amazing going down.

D- I know that the %6+ ABV is too high for the sessionable police but I'd say this is the most sessionable beer I've ever had.

Great full flavored porter. Nice roasted malty flavor. Tasteful without an overbearing smokiness.

A: Black color with a tan head that recedes to a thin film with a ring of foam around the edge of the glass.

S: Sweet smokey malts with a hint of coffee.

T: Lots of the smokey malts going on with a little bit of hoppiness too.

M: Pretty full bodied here. I was surprised given the ABV at how big this beer was.

D; I'll have another please!

A - Darker than many stouts, nice chocolate brown color. Would like a little more foamy head.

S - Smells lovely. Smoky, earthy, chocolate with a faint hop aroma.

T - Not quite as good as Founders Breakfast Stout, but very very tasty.

M - Clean and smooth. Wanted a little thicker/creamier texture. Might just be my expectation/perception based on the really dark color...

O - Stouts and porters seem to be dominated by Founders. Great beer for a cold rainy day, or anytime you want to enjoy a good porter.

Poured from a short 12 ounce brown bottle into a pint glass. The bottle says it contains 6.5% abv and 45 ibu's.

Appearance: Thick black body with a two finger chocolatey light brown head.

Smell: Lots of roasted, chocolate, and burnt malts. It really smells like a Russian imperial stout.

Taste: The taste is alot like the smell. The flavors stick around in your mouth long after you swallow the beer.

This is one great porter. It's right up there with Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter in my opinion.

This is my first go-round with the porter. Not a big porter drinker, but Founders is easily one of my favorite breweries so I'm looking forward to this one.

12 oz'er with no freshness date. Purchased as a single.

A- Pours a thick dark brown/black, not unlike a sludgy coffee. Thick head forms, but dissipates fairly quickly. Good lacing left.

S- Real smokiness and nice roasted malt. Coffee comes through next with a little carmel in there. Hint of chocolate. Serious mocha scent.

T- At first, quite bitter, but a nice nutty sweetness comes through. Very malty but also with a nice hop presence (not a lot though). Carmel, some molasses, smoked wood. Almost a hint of fruit at the end, seems more like an illusion, or allusion maybe.

M- Very silky, but also a nice carbonation comes through.

D- Super drinkable and smooth. For someone who doesn't typically reach for it, this is a really, really nice porter. As the bottle contends, "Dark, rich + sexy," indeed. Go get you some.

Appearance
Typical porter color: deep dark brown, almost black, with a small cocoa powder colored head

Smell
Delicious! Big smell wafting off this of dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate

Taste & Mouthfeel
Oh wow. Really, really tasty porter here; big flavors like a stout, but really smooth and not overly bitter; sweet like an iced mocha; just delicious; velvety texture, medium bodied; at 6.5%, this is big for the style, slightly hindering drinkability, but it tastes so good!

Overall
I can't think of a better porter than Fouders'. This is so good! It absolutely sets the standard.

From notes 1-19-10

Eye: Black and opaque, no light passes through this, being this dark its hard to judge how clear this beer is. Head retention could use some work, presently its just a thin tan film covering the body of the beer. Legs of lacing, foamy head.

Nose: Big coffee and heavily roasted and burnt, black acrid aromas, dark chocolate chocolate. Everything a porter should be. Some sweetness and calm milky tones underneath...not that I get lactose, its just the way to describe the richness and overall smoothness of the entire beer. Up there with Edmund Fiztgerald.

Tongue: Extremely smooth. Big roasted and burnt bitterness notes. Not cloyingly bitter or acrid thorugh. Notes of bittersweet chocolate, roasted tones. Seriously, everything you could really want from a porter. Hop bitterness is low and is out of the way of this beer, black malt and roasted grain bitterness give balance here.

Feel and Drinkability: Great body and feel. This is definitely one that I'll not shy away from. Different from GLBC Fitzgerald, but just as good. They are two different beasts of the same name, same nature. Body is medium, a bit lighter in heft than I would have expected....it feels like velvet though. Aftertaste is long lasting and is of coffee, chocolate and some roasted grain bitterness. You can't ask for more.

Pours what seems jet black with nice tannish head. Smells of chocolate malt with a little roast. Hops are pine-like and slightly spicy. Tastes mostly roasty with waves of chocolate and caramel. Feels like I bit into a Hershey candy bar. Tastes medium full with ample bitterness. An excellent tasting porter. I'm really glad I came across this. Will be looking for this one again.

Well, this is very, very good. I tried the Porter about 18 or so months ago, and literally just picked up two bottles the other day, reviewing my second now.

This was bottled on 12/24/12, and pours a delicious super dark brown/black coffee color.

Smell is more than appropriate; Roasty/toasty malt and barley. Tobacco, hint of leather and grass.

Taste is similar. Super balanced and nearly perfect taste for a porter. This is incredible creamy.

Feels almost like a milk stout. It's a tad bit sweet, balanced with hops and light carb on the end.

overall, this could be my favorite porter, very good. My impression is that it needs to be fresher but not necessarily within weeks -- I'm thinking within 6-8 months. This is very good. Cheers.

Had this at lunch at Kieran's Pub in Minneapolis. Very pleased to see it on the menu. Poured into a pilsner glass.

Appearance: Founder's Porter pours a very dark brown color, almost black, with about a finger of mocha colored head. Lacing is a moderate layer of fine film after it reduces.

Smell: Lots of roasted malts, some chocolate, and just a touch of smoke. It smells very rich.

Taste: I've got to say this is one of the richest porters I've ever tried. Lost of roasted malts, chocolate, and vanilla. Classic porter taste, just great.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with a little carbonation. Viscous, very smooth and creamy on the palate. Delightful. This is absolutely an awesome tasting porter. My favorite of the style that I've had.

Poured into a nonic.

Pours a near black with some ruby edges. Has a dark tan fluffy head that settles to a layer on top with minimal lacing. Good looks.

Brew smells of roasted malts, big roasted nose; coffee, dark cocoa molasses. Very good nose.

Brew is velvety smooth, creamy head and mouthfeel. Full bodied brew here. Sweet cocoa, roasted notes picked up in the drying semi bitter finish. A bit of milk chocolate as well. Great feel and flavors here. Tremendous.

Wow - may be the best porter I have had. I would like to sample this next to some of my favorites of this style. This is certainly a world class stand out brew here.

Enjoyed on tap at Three Cellars in Franklin, WI. Pour with a black body and extremely dark brown and thick head of fluffy foam. Aromas of chocolate and coffee along with some roasted malt sweetness. Mouthfeel is full bodied and creamy with a low to medium amount of carbonation. Flavor is almost like a milk chocolate bar. There's a toasty flavor from the malts as well and a sweet but not cloying finish with a little bit of bitterness. This beer is just execptional!
