12 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: pitch black in color not much of a head but it was on the colder side when I poured it a little film rims the glass

S: licorice bakers chocolate roasty malts

T: very nice chocolate and roasted malts with some light licorice

M: a touch thin but not as thin as some porters the creamy full mouth feel. makes this beer feel like its a weightier version

O: Excellent its a superbly done porter, while it might not bring anything new to the porter game it is flawlessly executed. Its big rich malty and nice chocolate tones with a fairly creamy mouthfeel you can't ask for much more in a porter

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass
L: Pours a brownish black color while appearing black in the glass. Nice mocha colored finger of head.
S: Roasted malt with lots of cocoa and milk chocolate.
T: Follows the nose with roasted malt upfront followed by chocolate. The finish brings back the roasted malt character along with some hop bitterness.
F: Medium plus mouthfeel
Overall this is a pretty great porter. Rich in roasted malt flavor while still being very easy to session.

This was a 12oz beer I got on sale, at nearly a year old (dated 10/28/2014). Pours a jet black, with a slight amount of head that is light-brown in color. Aroma is more chocolate than dark malts. Flavor is very smooth, velvety, and I can get some dark malts and chocolate (it is a bit bitter on the finish).

Although I am not a big fan of porters, this is one of the best I have ever had: it is beautiful in appearance, and although the aroma is somewhat mild, it is wonderful, and the flavor is enjoyable and very palatable. This beer is very easy to drink.

Served as part of a "beer flight" tasting board.

It is a dark beer, like a deep espresso in colour. Brown/black. There is minimal head, but what there is is firm and smoothe. Very attractive looking beer.

It has a clean, grainy smell. Redolent of grass, which is unusual in a porter but enjoyable nonetheless.

The flavour is robust with notes of coffee and mild cocoa bitterness in the aftertaste.

Serving style : poured into a chalice.

Appearance : Dark, pitch black body. Pours the color of used motor oil. The head is gigantic, and then simply recedes into the body, but leaves a creamy cap on top, perfectly colored with almond accents and ridiculously beautiful lace. This is the best appearance of any porter I've ever seen. Five.

Smell : Roasted chocolate malts, mocha, coffee bean, vanilla bean, some light black licorice, and some slight wet earth. This is turning out solid so far.

Taste : It's light enough that it takes a second or two to develop the flavor into words. Dark malts invade the tongue like a welcome plague. Cocoa and coffee bean follow shortly after, leaving a coffee-like dry bitterness on the finish. This is a seriously awesome porter. I could take a bit more chocolate, otherwise it's perfect.

Feel : Dense, creamy, warm...this is the magnum opus of porter drinkability. The carbonation is mild to moderate and provides a base for the creamy swath to rest upon. It waves goodbye politely with a drying bitterness with bean and coffee ground.

Overall : This porter rivals Deschutes' Black Butte and Central Waters' Mudpuppy as my favorite. Definitely in the top three. Mudpuppy has the chocolate but not the coffee, Deschutes has the roasted malt with cocoa accents that balances perfectly. The Founders Porter is more on the dry bitter coffee side, but it does it well. I'd be hard pressed to pass this up again when I see it.

As good as I could ever want from a porter. Malty goodness in perfect proportion to a decent hop bill and a creamy, decadent mouth feel add up to a great fall campfire beer. And the 6.5% abv is right where it should be. Enough to keep you warm, but not so much you end up on fire.

Looks very dark brown/black. Thin dark tan head sticks around for a while, grabbing the glass with each sip. Smells of dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is similar, more dark chocolate/coffee. Great flavor, hard to just sip this one. Creamy mouthfeel. I will definitely be having a few of these this winter!

Look: Nice, darker brown body. Thinner, semi-fine, mocha head. Slicker legs and lace.
Smell: Burnt coffee and dark malts first come to mind. Or we could go with black coffee and dark malts. What about black coffee with two lumps of sugar with medium roasted malts. You get the picture...
Taste: This tastes like an American Porter. Roasted malts and a dab of char, coffee, and some cocoa. Blend in a touch of hops and a drop of smoke flavor, and voila. Very basic, but well-made.
Feel: Solid and cagey feel. Good start and nice end.

Overall - I apologize for taking so long to review this beer. This beer is like the girl next door that you fail to notice, but when you two finally get together, you soon realize you have been missing out for many moons.

Bought from my local liquor store.

Generally a fairly typical stout/porter look. A fairly large head, but besides that it is basically the norm.

Smells clearly of chocolate. Subtle tones of malt and coffee.

Surprisingly light for a porter. But with definite taste of cacao and chocolate. Otherwise it's a satisfying, yet generic, taste.

A really solid porter. There's a little bit of a licorice flavor, and a lot of roasted malts flavor. Very impressive, which is what I would expect from Founders.

This was delicious. Tons of chocolate and coffee flavors with a nice roasted malt backbone. There was no sweetness whatsoever though, instead delivering it's flavor in a more dry and savory way. Which I loved as a nice change of pace from most stouts and porters I have had.

Would revisit.

Look: Black in color. One finger caramel-colored head (vanished quickly/poured from a bottle) Mild carbonation keeps a small island of foam at the top of the glass. zero lacing

Smell: Rich mocha and chocloate.

Taste: Mocha and chocolate...a little caramel

Feel: Medium body. A little creamy. Good carbonation

Overall: Mmmmm...a good Porter that I would buy regularly. The smell alone gets me.

12 oz. bottle into a New Belgium snifter. Pours a very dark brown and settles as black as coal in the glass. A semi-aggressive pour yielded a thin lacing, tan in color. Decent carbonation. Fairly strong aroma (for a single porter) of roasted malt, chocolate, and oak. Notes of cinammon, molasses, caramel, and vanilla present as well. Medium weight, and fairly creamy on the mouthfeel while reamaining carbonated. A spike of sweet, roasted malt up front on the taste with a chocolate backdrop introduces this beer to the palate. A slight hoppiness in the background as well as it warms. Moderate chocolate on the back end with a smooth, creamy finish. Leaves a dry, coffee-forward aftertaste in its wake.

Overall, very good. I've never been a fan of non-imperial porters, or stouts, for that matter. But this beer is quite the exception. Just about everything you could ask for in an American Porter without crossing that line into the big boys.

Keeping in mind what this beer really is, it's a monster of a porter. Absoloutely delicious.

Look: Two fingers of Brown creamy head. Opaque and black in color. Mild carbonation keeps a small island of foam at the top of the glass. No lacing really.

Smell: Mocha and roasted cocoa. Very rich.

Taste: Mocha, cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla, a little nuttiness, Fresh cracked coffee bean bitterness. Rich lingering chocolates. A little bit of alcohol is present, but not much.

Feel: Medium body. A little creamy. I had some watery porters in the past and this one certainly is not that.

Overall: Pretty dang awesome. Rich wonderful porter utilizes every ounce of flavor to bring a complex, balanced beer. Picked this one up in a trip to Ohio and if Founders ever makes its way to Colorado I will squeal like a little girl.

Yeah Baby, found a liquor store that stocks Founder's, not even TW has Founder's down here so that being said, this is the first of the current score, lets give it a whirl. Popping the top I get a smell of cocoa and roasted malts. Pours to an opaque jet black with a dark tan multi sized bubble head. Head clings wickedly as it slowly recedes. On the taste, heavenley roasted malt is the first wallop followed by a solid offset of bitterness transitioning to a nutty clingingly bittersweet finish. This my friends is a brew to be savored or swilled, whatever your pleasure. ABV is respectable to session at will. Finally into the club! Prost!

This poured a very dark appearance with just a bit of head. The aroma gave me hints of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste wise I detect hints of chocolate and the roasted malts and the overall feeling is very smooth. This is probably the best Porter I have had so far.

Look: Dark as night chocolate color with little to no head.

Smell: Lots of chocolate smells, mild roast very rich.

Taste: Rich, chocolate flavors. Paired it with some caramel chocolate and it went nicely with this balanced beer.

Feel: Felt plain in the mouth didn't wow me but wasn't very heavy either.

Overall: This beer surprised me. Tried to compare this to Sierra Nevada's porter and this one takes it for sure.

This is a nice looking dark beer. It came with a very thin caramel head. Had a nice roasted malty smell. Could taste a hint of chocolate. No over powering taste, but was still pretty good.
