12 oz bottle poured into a nonic.

Pours a syrupy, almost black opaque liquid with a thick, retentive coffee colored head that leaves a lot of lacing. Aroma is very rich, dark chocolate, roast malt, coffee, etc. Body is light, but syrupy, with a high amount of carbonation and similar flavors as aroma, dark chocolate, light coffee, roasted malt and a strong hop presence in the finish. Compares very well to Edmund Fitzgerald, one of my favorites porters and offerings from Founders. (484 characters)

A: Dark, full bodied looking head. A solid brown color with largish bubbles. 3+ fingers. Can't see any active carb because the beer itself is so dark. Can't really see through, but it has some dark reddish brown in a very few thin spots around the edge. No lacing.

S: Dark fruit, burnt sugar maybe. Some roastyness. No hops. Not very strong overall, but that doesn't bother me because I'm not a big fan of the smell. Too coffee like for something that doesn't claim to be a coffee beer.

T: Similar to the smell, but more mild and yet more present. Less roasted, more dark fruit. Some sweetness. It gets better as I drink more.

M: a little fizzy, but generally smooth

D: Great if you like the taste, ok if not. (713 characters)

I am very happy with Founders porter. I had sampled Bell's porter earlier today and Great Lakes Eddie Fitz two days ago, the Founders was easily the best. Nice and creamy. The head was nothing special. Chocolate and coffee taste with the coffee lingering on the tongue after the swallow. This is what a porter should be. The second Founders effort that has not disappointed (Breakfast Stout), can hardly wait to try another one. (428 characters)

Pours black with a very thin tan head the disappears really quick. Aroma is coffee and vanilla with a little earthiness. Wow, the flavor is very intense and well balanced. Very enjoyable. I get coffee, a bit of chocolate, a touch of smoke, with a citrus and a little bitter in the finish. I agree with others that this is more like a top notch stout than most porters I've had, but definitely enjoyable in it's own right. (421 characters)

Bottle pours thicker and darker than many stouts. Small khaki head diminishes into some curtains of lace.

Aroma is bold and heady. Cocoa, scalded coffee, nuttiness, toasted caramel, vanilla, and dark chocolate vie for attention here. A trace of dark fruits underneath.

Mouthfeel is on the thick side of medium. Plenty of creaminess. Soft carbonation adds a layer of velvet.

Taste is bitter and roasty. Roasted Kenya coffee beans, cocoa, dark chocolate, and some roasted almond nuttiness. Hints of earthy and citrusy hops underneath. Dark fruits, mostly figs, add even more complexity. Just a touch of alcohol is noticed, but it feels appropriate here. Bitter roasty finish that lingers.

This is a very impressive porter. (726 characters)

A - Very dark brown in color with a one inch thick espresso like cap of foam. Head slowly fades to a thin cap on top. Thick rings of lace are left behind.

S - Rich dark chocolate and big roasted malts are the dominant aromas. A light hint of American hops comes through as the beer warms.

T - The taste presents more bitter sweet chocolate with a nice backing of citrusy American hops. A very clean bitternes matched with a strong chocolate taste. The underlying taste of roasted malt carries throughout.

M/D - Medium bodied, rich, and creamy. Very easy drinking. The bitterness lingers long after the beer is gone. Not near as acrid of taste as some big roasted malts provide in other beers. (695 characters)

A - It's got a nice thick head on the pour with a sweet lacing left behind to decorate the interior of my imbibing device.

S - Smoky chocolate velvet nummy

T - Sweet, choco, tobacco nutty, pretty much the gambit of good shit that can exist in a darker beer. No overwhelming alchy or any noticeable off flavors. Could use more choco or one dominant flavor.

M - Yup, I fee it

D - All night long. I be sippin this syrup with smores or truffles any night. Nothing for the daytime or summer love though

Great beer. Solid all around and probably my favorite of the porters that I have tasted. Not a huge fan of the style and I believe in the simplicity of it. That is the only fall back of this beer as I feel it gets a little lost in its simple porter-ness and tries to be too complex. (785 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Dark brown, almost black color. Nice full flavor but still easy to drink. Coffee and chocolate malt flavors but neither are overpowering. This was my first beer from Founder's brewery but I will definitely try more based on this one. (275 characters)

Poured from 12 oz bottle into shaker pint glass.
A: Pours black as a starless night...completely opaque with 1/2 thick dark tan head that recedes fairly quickly. Very nice.
S: Sweet roasted malt and dark chocolate. Straight-forward, but good.
T: Follows aroma well, but lacks the intensity that it was promising. Still above average for style.
M: Smooth with a hint of dry bitterness.
D: Quite drinkable. Not as complex as many brews, but good for style. (454 characters)

pours a dark brown color...beige head....substantial lace left on my glass

coffee...roasted malt....chocolate in the nose

very malt forward...roasted black coffee/chocolate...nice balance of sweetness and hops...aftertaste has a nice roasted/sweet balance

medium body...medium carbonation....very smooth...sticky finish

only had an 8oz glass of this but could easily put away a few full pints of this Founders offering...this porter seems to get overlooked by those searching for the Breakfast Stout or the KBS....if you spot it in the store give it a try....even though it's a porter, it's right up there with the other 2 well known Founders Stout offerings (662 characters)

Pours a deep, deep brown, nearly motor oil bodied with chocolate colored medium head.
Smells got some great chocolate and coffee beans here and a great roasted malt.
Flavor is just as it smells. Less coffee and more roasted/chocolate notes.
Finish is a bit muddy, but our after-taste is decent with some coffee bean flavor.
Drinks very well, the body is pretty smooth. (368 characters)

Thanks to KJK for getting this to me! Serving was in a bottle poured into a pint glass. Very dark black in color and a thin, brown, foamy head, with some nice lacing going on in the swirl. Taking a whiff of it the first thing that comes to mind is chocolate, but then there's also some cherry...some oaky-ness, some espresso and some just good old ethanol. When it first hits the palate it's very smooth with almost no taste. Then as it starts to sink in there's a lovely blend of smooth, rich chocolate, along with a pleasantly bitter roasty flavor and the coffee/espresso taste starts to come in a few moments after swallowing. Very smooth and very drinkable. Rich, dark and sexy indeed! (689 characters)

Pours a nice dark, dark mahogany...very deep brown almost black with a nice half inch of thick, dense coffee colored head.

Smell is rich dark roasted coffee brewing on a cold winter morning, brownie batter and a little bit of a Kahlua-esque scent coming out as well.

Wow, this has to be the most rich and roasty porter I've had, it almost taste like a coffee stout. This stuff has a milk chocolate or mocoa quality to it that is just outstanding. Secretly I wish that all porters were like this one. So flavorful, tons of toasty/roasty notes, lots of nice coffee flavors that really hit the spot.

The mouthfeel is very creamy and rich, much denser than a lot of porters I've had.

Love it, wish I had 5 more of them. (720 characters)

A- Wow, this one comes out black and slick- Am I pouring a beer or motor oil? Just less than a finger of head tops the beer- also darker than expected. And some very nice lacing- walls on one side and thick lines on the other.

S- Another Wow, strong wiffs of roasted boozy aroma comes across. There's brown sugar combined with maple syrup. Dark rich espresso. Slight cherry. And there's hints of bourbon- I'm not sure if it's vanilla flavors, or otherwise oaked flavors, or simply flavorful alcohol. But this smells delicious.

T- Roasted grain, dark chocolate covered chocolate beans. Once again some bourbon deliciousness. Not a lot of hop flavor but some nice bitterness regardless. Delicious.

M- This mouthfeel is perfect for the look, smell, and taste of this beer. Just carbonated enough to break things up on the tongue and let me enjoy the deep complexity of it. And syrupy enough that it lingers and keeps me tasting it.

D- Wow I wish I had more of these. I have been incredibly impressed by the Founders stout and I should've had higher expectations for this one. It is great! Really great! (1,103 characters)

a - black with creamy dark tan head, excellent lacing

s - rich nutty smell with chocolate and coffee, also quite hoppy

t - sweet and very interesting taste that is a mix of chocolate, nuts, burnt malt, and hops. Most of the time these flavors separate well but for me this has a solid mix throughout. Has just the right amount of hops and roasty burnt flavor profile for a porter. amazing how the complexity of flavors manage to blend together so well.

m - full and smooth mouthfeel

d - a fantastic porter. definitely towards the very top of the list for me. (563 characters)

Appearance
Typical porter color: deep dark brown, almost black, with a small cocoa powder colored head

Smell
Delicious! Big smell wafting off this of dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate

Taste & Mouthfeel
Oh wow. Really, really tasty porter here; big flavors like a stout, but really smooth and not overly bitter; sweet like an iced mocha; just delicious; velvety texture, medium bodied; at 6.5%, this is big for the style, slightly hindering drinkability, but it tastes so good!

Overall
I can't think of a better porter than Fouders'. This is so good! It absolutely sets the standard. (591 characters)

dark and lovely. coffee, chocolate, cocoa, near burnt roasty malt goodness. well balanced and on the fuller side of porter. founders' beers have been impressive, but their dark beers have been outstanding. traditional and unique at the same time, this one really filled my jones for porter, which by the way, i think is the perfect burger beer. nice.... (353 characters)

12 oz bottle

A: Deep brown/black under a medium brown head. Good lace and retention.

S: Roasted malt with chocolate and coffee. A bit nutty. Not a whole lot going on, but enough to let you know you're about to sip a tasty, balanced porter.

T: More of the same. Roasted malt, sweet, finish is of bitter chocolate and coffee. Little bit of espresso. Nothing in you face, just good solid porter.

M/D: Full bodied, carbonation is every so prickly, bit slick. Drinkability is excellent. I could drink this porter all night long. Never overwhelming, just a solid, balanced porter. (578 characters)

A-Pours a dark opaque brownish black w/tan head, nice retention, and slight lacing.

S-Coffee, dark chocolate mocha w/roasty malt notes and rich earth, and faint hops.

T-Slightly sweet coffee and dark chocolate, roasty midpalate w/rustic earth tones and light hops in the finish that linger into a bitter and slightly burnt, smoky aftertaste.

M-Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, excellent balance.

D-This is an excellent porter that I'd by a six-pack of any day. (468 characters)

poured into an imperial pint glass with a dark almost motor oil quality as it pours with a thin head and no lacing. as black as night like deep silk.

Smells of rich bitter chocolate and a hop nose in the back end. I get some brown sugar and mollasses in the back with a earthy malt character.

Tastes OH MY GOD! Silky smooth with a bitter chocolate flavor and a hint of espresso in the back. no words, must...drink....more.

Mouth is incredibly viscous, quite possibly could be the definition of viscous. frinks like syrup but oh so smooth and lovely, (552 characters)

Poured into a tall pint glass

Dark deep block out the sun black with a low head or flim around the edges, very dark porter

Man there is alot going on here deep rich roasted malt and coffee/esspresso notes along with some more subtle hops notes and a light chocolate undertone.

Every single thing that you smell you taste, this beer is amazing on the palate, bitter malt and coffee flavors dominate the front with a smooth rich full chocolate middle and bittersweet finish. This is quite possiblly one of the best beers I have ever had.

Nice full and rich full body very sliky smooth on the palate. Complexity is hard to put into words all of the flavors come together so good its almot hard to belive.

Drinkability you ask? Yes please! (740 characters)

Pours a deep brown, near black color. Small tan head on top that dissolves quickly to a very thin film. No lacing.

Nose is strong roasted malt. Light chocolate, and then coffee that gets stronger as the brew warms. Nice, straight-forwardly aromatic.

Flavor is even better, and definitely more complex. Lots of coffee, roasted malt. Chocolate, some light dried fruit (prunes?). A hint of toffee. Cookies. Smokiness. Pretty smooth drink.

Body is medium to full with good carbonation.

Overall, a very good beer. Nice flavor, one I'd come back to for sure. (560 characters)

This just became available at the sterling Neil St. Piccadcilly in Champaign, so I plucked a sixer out of the box before they could even stack it on the shelf. As I did so, I realized that it had been some time since I had tried a new porter and, given Founders' outstanding reputation, I figured this would be very good. It was all of that, and maybe more.

An aggressive pour into the Yankees pint glass yielded but a thin mocha-colored layer of foam atop a rich black body with ruby trim. Excellent color, and a nice-looking beer overall. The aroma is a step up, packed with chocolate, coffee, and more than a hint of sweet berry. I'm impressed with the aromatic complexity, which very much permeates the taste. Dark chocolate, smoky flavor, dry finish but with a good deal of sweet flavor, somewhat reminiscent of a chocolate toffee bar chased with a Tia Maria. Outstanding flavor, honestly.

Nicely effervescent throughout, bold but smooth, Founders Porter is one of the very best I've had, leaping near the top of my favorites for this style. To a good degree, I'm not too surprised since Founders just tackles what they do with aplomb. Nonetheless, I'm impressed. As I said to JD, the Piccadilly manager last week, there are some tremendous brewers in the US and what makes them so special is their ability to offer excellent brews across styles. My top three are..." and before I could finish, JD rattled off "Avery, Bell's, and Founders." In no particular order, I'm in total agreement, and Founders Porter is further justification why Founders is in my personal top three. They nail in exemplary fashion whatever they deign to tackle. Their Porter is no different.

Tremendous. (1,687 characters)

Pours coal black, syrupy; with a thin brown head.

Subtle flavors in the nose. Coffee, chocolate and hops are noticeable.

Malt and chocolate on the tongue.

It's creamy and buttery in the mouth, with only a hint of bitter in the finish. Despite a reasonably high IBU rating, it's only slightly bitter and not for very long; balanced by the malty flavors.

This would make a great dessert beer, and trust me, you'd want seconds. (430 characters)
