Appearance; Nearly obsidian body, utterly impenetrable to light, surmounted by a massive, persistent and somewhat coarse tan head. Thick, patchy lacing adorns the glass walls..
Aroma: Massive roasted coffee dominates the aroma, very much like freshly ground beans. Bitter cocoa as well, and some fugitive alcohol notes. The 45 IBUs are perceptible, but seem scarcely more than an afterthought.
Taste: Opens with a surge of cold coffee and bitter cocoa. Beneath this, there is a strong roasted malt presence, and an undercurrent of sweet chocolate. Late in the taste, some charcoal flavors appear. The hops but in a late appearance, offering a weak response to the massive malt presence.
Mouth feel: Smooth, very soft and full, very pleasant.
Drinkability/notes: Really excellent, shows what greatness a porter can aspire to.
Presentation: Packaged in a stubby twelve-ounce brown glass bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sampled from a 12oz bottle purchased at Triangle Wine in Morrisville, NC and bottled on 12/10/13.
A - A rich, deep brown with no light and minimal head.
S - Roasted coffee, cocoa, brown sugar and bread.
T - Roasted coffee and pumpernickel bread with a moderate bitterness that lingers. Generally dry with the slightest hint of sweetness.
M - A bit on the thin side with moderate carbonation.
O - Lots of flavor but also so accessible to the palettes of most beer drinkers.

General: I found this at a little craft beer spot. I'm a big fan of their breakfast stout and figured that since they had the porter I should try it. I poured this out of a standard 12 oz bottle into a chalice style glass.
Appearance: Great light tan head, the color of the beer itself is black, no two ways about it. There is lovely lacing on the glass after each sip. Very nice.
Aroma: Alcoholic aroma with a touch of coffee. It's got a nice chocolate note also that is really nice. It is a pretty straight forward porter, nice and clean flavors.
Mouthfeel: On the thicker end of the style but still acceptable. I really like it. Carbonation is moderate and is very nice. There is a touch of alcohol burn to this which is ok.
Taste: Chocolate, coffee and heavy maltiness. There is a touch of alcohol too which is fine but it's not that big because it's only 6.5% ABV.
Overall: I like this, I'm not crazy about it like I am their breakfast stout but this is a pretty good porter. I'm a fan and will drink it again, if you see it and you like porters this is a good example of the style.

Founder's Porter shows off an inky black body, even sporting a bit of sheen. The milk chocolate head easily rises to over a finger in height, becomes exceptionally frothy, and eventually falls to a robust cap. Lacing decorates every surface of the glass that the foam touches. A great looking beer Founder's Porter is.
We have a nose here that's jammed full of roast and chocolate goodness. The roast is healthy and robust but never acrid. Dusty cocoa powder and some soft, clean hazelnut highlight the roast. A touch of lactic sweetness brings up the rear. The smell is rich but well balanced between roast and sweet with good depth.
The flavor profile shows much of the same characteristics as the nose. Smooth roast hits up front and pushes all the way through to the finish, growing as it goes. All the components I mention above are integrated seamlessly into the roastiness. We go from soft cocoa into chewy hazelnut into a light, lactic sweetness. There is even a hint of peppery berries here and there. The finish has a touch of bitterness from both the roast and a solid IBU.
With the all around robust nature of the flavor profile the rich body fits well. The moderately heavy body wraps around your tongue from the get go in a silky smooth fashion. The carbonation adds enough oomph to add an airy feel. The finish is roasty dry with a lingering, but soft, hop bitterness. Decadent!
Founder's take on the porter is probably my favorite on the planet with competition from only a few. It's rich, robust, and decadent but nothing overtakes as a whole it's in great balance. When I'm in the mood for a porter, which is often, I seem to grab this version most often.
