Look: Very dark. Tan head that dissipates to a thin ring around the edge.

Smell: Dark chocolate, coffee. A bit roasty and nutty. A hint of hops.

Taste: A very roasty flavor, almost like peanuts. A hint of coffee and dark chocolate, and again, just a small hint of hops.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Nice and creamy.

Overall: A very well balanced beer. Not exactly what I expected. I expected it to be a bit sweeter, but I'm still impressed.

The darkest brown with a light brown head.

Coffee and roasted malt aroma.

Dark chocolate syrup is first to mind, little coffee note in there, too. The darker malts give off a charred taste. A very straight forward, hearty beer. I can't pick up the hops but there's a touch of sweetness on the finish.

Could well be a stout. A dirty kind of brew that's all the better for it.

Bottle to glass

Appearance - Pours a deep brown/black colour with a good mocha coloured head that fades quickly and leaves good lacing.

Smell - Chocolate, lots of coffee, toasted malt, caramel

Taste - Dark chocolate, coffee, toasted malt, slightly smokey, vanilla. Good tasting beer!

Overall - Very good porter that has lots of coffee and chocolate flavour to it

12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass.

Appearance: Pours dark brown with a 1 finger light brown head, which dissipates fairly quickly into lacing.

Smell: Dark chocolate, roasted barley, molasses. Touch of toasted malt and caramel. No real hop presence.

Taste: Same as the smell - dark chocolate, molasses, hint of coffee, roasted barley, and caramel malt. Finishes slightly sweet. No alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, pretty low carbonation level. Very smooth.

Overall: Easily one of the best classic porters on the market along with Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Lots of chocolate notes, a hint of coffee, with a bitter finish. Not your typical porter - reminds me of a chocolate stout, with a pretty full mouthfeel, though not as creamy or thick or sweet as a chocolate stout. The lack of sweetness makes this fairly easy drinking, and probably would be an excellent go-to winter beer.

I actually prefer a more complex flavor profile than this delivered, although what it did it did very well.

Review for this beer must have gotten eaten over the years. Oh well. Jan 2014 bottle, poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Pours a very nice dark dark brown pour with a thin quarter inch mocha head that fades to leave very light side lacing and a thin thin creamy blanket.

S - Aromas of deep, rich darker chocolate, light coffee, nice roasted malts, light burnt coffee, faint light metallic note though.

T - Taste is smooth, silky dark chocolate, rich roasted malts, bitter coffee, light hops, very nice chocolate notes.

M - Mouthfeel is silky creamy smooth. Quite nice.

O - Overall, this is a solid, no brainer go to porter when one needs a fix.
