This beer had a nice dark brown color almost black and a light tan foamy head to on it. The aroma of this beer was chocolaty, with hints of caramel and nice roasted malt touch to it.

The taste was very interesting with a touch of coffee, flavor that account for the bitterness of this beer and a nice touch of chocolate that balanced this beer nicely.

This was a very thick beer and it I don't think I could drink a lot of it. It was very good though.

On tap at Ashley's in Ann Arbor.

A: Dark and brown. Like a muddy road after it's been raining all afternoon. Great looking wispy white/tan head. About an inch thick.

S: Smokey BBQ, campfire, dark malts, java, and cocoa too. Overall, an outstanding smelling porter from an outstanding brewery.

T: This is where this beer really shines. Dark roasted malts really come through and the thick texture of this beer coats your mouth from top to bottom. Towards the end a nice coffee/cocoa taste seems to burst through leaving a more than pleasant taste on the tip of your tongue.

M: Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. In all honesty, I wouldn't change a thing about this mouthfeel. It seems real close to perfect.

D: Great drinkability. At 6.5% ABV it's, again, perfect.

Overall, I took out an Unearthy and a Plead the 5th Impy Stout at the bar and I knew I needed something to calm the storm if I was going to make it through the night. I found Founders Porter to be the remedy.

I've been a sort of beer geek for two decades now but I've never really explored the full range of dark ales made today. I've had many a beer from every continent but I want now to explore American dark ales. I've decided to start with this one. Porter was an early love of mine before I was seduced by belgian tripels and german doppelbocks. Everything comes around but it's never the same twice I guess.

G - Scaldis (Bush) Noel tulip glass.

A - Pours medium bodied black with a nice fluffy tan head. Very promising. Significant amount of carbonation adhering to bottom of glass.

S - A hint of coffee, chocolate, and an off-smelling pair of phenol and medicinal odors at first whiff that disappears. A turnoff. As the beer opens a little alcohol owns much of the nose.

T - Sharp and surprisingly hot for 6.5% ABV. Prickly hops overwhelm the start of a decent set of malt flavors. Nice smooth rich malty finish. It has a long finish that lingers that isn't average but rather has two components that together average out that way.

M - Soapy on the end of the tongue, dry in the back of the palate. Not very integrated or smooth. Too carbonated.

O - The bitter and the sweet seem not to go together in this beer. Like west coast American wines this beer is very west coast American in its pursuit of sensory overload even if it's not west coast. There are delicate flavors in there but a lower and different hop recipe would serve it well. Just not for me.

Poured from a bottle into a standard shaker pint glass.

A: Pours a dark brown that borders on black. Impossible to see through, except around the very edges where it is a deep mahogany. Has a half inch light mocha head that fades quickly and provides no lacing.

S: An absolutely delicious and complex blend of roasted malts (especially chocolate malt), dark chocolate, coffee, and dark fruits.

T: The taste is as complex as the smell. Tastes initially of chocolate and roasted malts, then sticks on the tongue where the dark fruits show up ever so faintly on the finish. Not that this is an especially strong brew at 6.5% but there is absolutely no taste of alcohol whatsoever.

M: Appropriate to style - medium to maybe even slightly medium-thick mouthfeel with decent carbonation.

O: This is an exceptional porter from one of the best, most consistent breweries around. When you are looking for something dark but don't want the latest 11% -bbal RIS coated in unicorn tears, at $10/6 pack, this is far and away a great option.

Appearance: Very thick and smooth, dark dark brown. Pretty healthy brown/tan head, thick and dissipates very slowly.

Smell: Chocolate and coffee dominate.

Taste: Smoky and chocolate, hint of sweetness. Definitely pick up some coffee bitterness as well, don't really notice any bitterness until the aftertaste. Very rich taste, lot of flavors that balance really well.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and creamy.

Overall: I was very impressed with this beer, realize I didn't have much to write in the sections above but everything I noted was done very well. This is a really rich beer with a lot of porter-appropriate flavors that I noticed in phases during each drink. I would definitely go out of my way to order this if I saw someplace that had it on draft.
