Poured into a sampling glass. Vigorous poor gives a dark tan head which quickly disintegrates leaving plenty of lacing.

Smells of light roast but mostly a sweet alcoholic aroma as it warms.

Taste is roasted malt but subdued, and watery. Some alcohol but not in-your-face. a little bitterness in the finish and enhanced roasty character.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and watery, but nothing off-putting.

A good porter, I have not had so many recently but something I love coming back to.

Will try again if on tap, otherwise I will keep exploring!

poured into a tumbler

A: black. no head. insignificant lacing.

S: dark chocolate. roasted malts. a little smoke. vanilla.

T: roasted malts. coffee is really prevalent. bitter dark chocolate flavor is more subdued on the palate than in the nose. smoky yet slightly creamy. a flavor you really have to chew.

M: smooth and silky going down. mildly carbonated. medium bodied. the roasted malts leave a dry aftertaste.

O: a very drinkable porter. definitive of the style.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Aroma:  Roasted malt, coffee, and hints of dark chocolate.

Appearance:  opaque black.  Half a finger of head.

Flavor:  Roaster malt, coffee, and chocolate flavors abound.  Hop bitterness balances well with the malt sweetness.  Finishes fairly dry with some hop bitterness lingering.

Mouthfeel:   full body mouth feel.  Almost creamy consistency.  Moderate carbonation.

Overall:  This is an excellent porter.  Nice roasty flavors with enough bitterness to balance the malt sweetness.  Very enjoyable overall.

Poured into a pint glass.

A - Jet black in color with a dense khaki head that eventually becomes a thin layer of fizz. Okay lacing.

S - Big notes of chocolate and a little coffee.

T - Maybe not as big as the smell but a great tasting chocolate, coffee, and malts. On the roasty-darker side.

M - Thicker bodied than a normal porter, which I'm digging a lot. Very smooth all around.

O - The first porter to me that gives Edmund Fitzgerald a run for its money, and I definitely like it more than black butte. I don't know if it has quite has big a chocolate taste, but it certainly holds up well in all other categories. In general though, another great offering from Founders.
