Dark brown in color, Dirty Bastard has a cloudy body and a moderate pour is all that is necessary to produce a lovely head of light tan- colored foam. This nose on this beer is one of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel and is quite nice.
If the appearance wasn’t already good enough, the flavor of this beer certainly is. It offers tastes of sweet, caramelized malt, wood, and some smoke. Searching more, I was able to find some flavors of butterscotch, toffee, and a touch of vanilla. A good dose of bitterness at the end keeps this beer nicely balanced.
This is a delicious glass of Scotch Ale from one of the nation’s finest breweries and I like it more and more with each passing sip. The alcohol level is higher than the average beer, but it isn’t as noticeable as I expected it to be. The interplay between the hops and malts and the great deal of complexity are this beer’s strong points and they just keep on giving, all the way to the end of the glass. It’s certainly a beer worth seeking out.
