Picked this up at Julio's in Westboro on my way home from work this evening. Man was I happy to see that they carried Founders. No breakfast stout, though, sadly. Anyhoo - glad they had this.
Pours a deep dark reddish hue. Originally a nice head was on there but after a few minutes there's not a trace of foam anywhere along the top. That's surprising. Spot on coloring, but the lack of head knocks the appearance down a notch.
Nose, however, brings it right back up. Sweet molasses, toasty bread, raisin, and very slight smoky peat. There's a hint of alcohol in there too that makes me feel warm already.
Big smooth and creamy mouthfeel - just excellent. Sweet, malty breaddish taste at the beginning tempered by the tangue of alchohol lacing throughout. Touches of coffee and brown sugar. After just a second a dark smoky character settles in like the back-room of some underground pub. Hooo boy this is a fantastic Scotch ale. Curse me kilt that I only bought two bottles!!!
This is one of the best American Scotch ales I've had. Just fantastic.

This scotch ale pours a deep brownish mahogany hue with a very slight off white head that leaves a thin film and substantial lacing. The aroma is deep, rich, and sweet. Lots of burnt sugar caramel and toffee notes plus a little vanilla and alcohol. It is definitely a thicker side of medium bodied beer with lots of coating sweetness. The flavor is amazing. Lots of rich malts following the profile set up by the nose. There is a little bitterness on the tail that just makes one want to dive back in for another sip of the awesome caramely malts on the front end. This is a great example of this style and always a favorite from one of my favorite breweries.
