Pours a murky chestnut color with burnt orange highlights and a modest khaki head that settles quickly into a veil of patchy frogspawn. Aroma smells of rich maple syrup, dark fruit, and toasted bread--almost like an imperial stout, but more sweetness and less roasted character.
Flavor tastes of maple syrup, molasses, and brown sugar up front with present alcohol that actually helps cut the sweetness. There's also a healthy dose of herbal hops to lend some balance, though they manifest more in the middle and end. The finish is almost evocative of a barleywine in its complexity. Aside from the aforementioned sweetness, there's also some dark fruit and a slight nuttiness, along with a mild alcoholic haze. Warming only enhances the depth of character, revealing sophisticated woody notes in the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth, drinkable, and slightly sticky.
This is an exemplary display of how to do a malty-sweet style without being cloying or one-dimensional. Dirty Bastard is complex, well balanced, and more than the sum of its parts. Another ace effort by one of my favorite breweries.

355 mL bottle picked up in Port Huron, bottled May 24 2014. It has been well over a year since I last tried a new wee heavy. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a murky brownish-ruby colour, topped with one finger of frothy, off-white head that wilts rapidly over the next minute or two. A soapy film remains, along with a narrow collar; not much in the way of lace. The aroma is big on the malts, with notes of toffee, plum, treacle, vanilla and cherry-flavoured red licorice. Very rich, and a little fruitier than I expect this style to be.
A delicious scotch-style ale. Molasses and toffee are first to hit the palate, followed by more plum/raisin fruitiness and red licorice. Some nutty chocolate notes and toasted malts then begin creeping in, with a whisper of peaty malt becoming more noticeable toward the finish, which is earthy with a hint of tobacco. Lingering bitterness interacts nicely with the peat and malt sweetness. Medium in body; maybe a little on the thicker side, with restrained carbonation that gives this brew a rich, smooth, luxurious feel on the palate. Surprisingly drinkable given the abv - some slight ethanol heat is detectable on the tail end of the sip, but it blends in nicely.
Final Grade: 4.33, an outstanding A grade. Founders' Dirty Bastard is one of the finest wee heavies I've had the pleasure of drinking in my 8 years on this site, with a beautifully bold malt backbone that works perfectly with the smooth mouthfeel and earthy hop finish. This is not one of my favourite styles, but like all of Founders' offerings (at least - the ones I've tried so far), I'd be more than willing to pick up a sixer at some point in the future, as this is a quality malt bomb that is sure to be a crowd pleaser. A fabulous brew to ring in my 700th BA review.

This is an old favorite of mine. I haven't had it in three years though and perhaps my palate has changed. Here goes:
A: A dark reddish-brown. It's very opaque and little light gets through. While the head was rather small, the lacing more than made up for it.
S: OK, neither good nor bad. Actually smells quite like a barleywine. There's a lot of caramel and amber malts, and these impart a very sweet-smelling character. Can detect lots of dark fruits such as figs, raisins and plum. English hops are somewhat apparent, but these are dominated by the malty smell.
T: Very good. The taste follows the nose. The malt is very sweet, and in it I can taste lots of figs, plums, raisins, raspberry and cherries. Almost too sweet, but I suppose this is a style issue (Scotch ales are brewed at very low temperatures and this winds up leaving a lot of residual sugars, as the yeast aren't as active).
M: Very good. Thick and creamy. It glides down the throat rather well.
O: A very solid beer. Goes well with fruit-flavored cheesecake and chocolate fudge.
